This is something that has been bugging me a looooong time.
We make a brand new server.
All the players that come to the server for the first 2 days ask one or all the following:
"Ban me?"
"Do you need staff?"
"I'm from <insert place that they don't actually work, here.> and I'm here to evaluate your server, OP me please?"
Why?
I have honestly tried to find some kind of reasoning behind a couple of these. Why ask to be banned? I cannot think of a legitimate, sane reason someone would purchase minecraft, and deliberately ask to get banned from (probably) every server they enter. Does any one have a logical explanation here?
Why ask to be a staff member? I'm willing to bet that 90 - 99% of sane administrators say no. Why would you want to be a staff member for people you don't even know? Why not TRY and get to know the admins and see if you even want to be a staff member? What makes you think admins should trust you, when you've literally been on the server all of 5 - 10 seconds?
Asking for OP is a bad move especially to noob server owners just trying to have some fun and play the game they love. There are servers out there (used to be anyway, not sure anymore) that everyone is an op because they don't care. But 99% of servers will not just "give" you OP.
Are these just toddlers hungry for power? What did we ever do to them to deserve such crap?
On our server, if you ask any version of the above questions it's instaban, so I'm not worried about the integrity of the server, I'm genuinely interested in the logic behind these questions. Make a new account if you have to, I want to hear from the people that actually go on to a server and say "ban me" "staff me" "op me" There is no logic. None. Help me out here.
Also, in this thread I am requesting serious replies only. I am not requesting advice, tips on how to run a server or for trolls.
"Ask the owner or existing moderators if the server could use some more. This will get you an answer of whether or not you should keep trying, and tell the owner/mods that you are interested in becoming one.
Just ask "Hey do you guys need another staff member? I really care about this server and don't want to see it go on the wrong path.""
Do not be too hash on them! They just assume they have learned some tricks and want to play.
There are instructions on the internet teaching people to ask the exact questions to become OP.
Yeah, I was just reading and watching a video on "how to become an op on any server" I was just giggling because none of that would work on us. We even have it written in our rules not to ask for staff/op because we have more than enough and we have all known each other for years.
Well, if I had a nickel for everytime I saw someone say those things.
- Probably doesn't get enough attention at home so they seek it.
- Wants to mess around with commands, usually. They usually don't do their job either, I've seen it happen.
- I've actually seen someone successfully obtain OP from this. These people also want to mess around.

I don't do this stuff, but my friend's friend's friend does.
1. Ban me is evidently a challenge of some sort. I don't really get it, but I don't get a lot of things.
2. These people are either A. Power hungry B. Legitimately concerned about the well being of the server.
3. These people are power hungry trolls.

There are instructions on the internet teaching people to ask the exact questions to become OP. For example,

"Ban me?" means "Will you ban me?"

Actually, there is a valid motivation for this:
People want to become OP so they learn and one day they setup their own servers.
