With the possibility of "Minecraft: WiiU Edition", I want to discuss all of these different versions of Minecraft and why I think it is ridiculous to have so many. Please keep in mind this is my opinion, you are entirely welcome to have different thoughts than me. I just think this is ridiculous. Be constructive if you disagree.
Let's start by listing all of the separate versions of the game.
- Minecraft (PC/Mac - the original game)
- Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition
- Minecraft: Xbox One Edition
- Minecraft: PlayStation 3 Edition
- Minecraft: PlayStation 4 Edition
- Minecraft: PlayStation Vita Edition
- Minecraft: Windows 10 Edition
- Minecraft: Raspberry Pi Edition
- Minecraft: Pocket Edition (separate games between Android, iOS, Fire OS, and Windows Phone)
If you lost count, that's 9 different versions of the game. Not counting the 4 different purchases available for Pocket Edition. To quickly note, I counted all the "Console Edition" games as separate games because that is how they are listed on the markets. They are separate games making up Console Edition. To also note, I am not counting "Minecraft: Story Mode" as that is an entirely different game based off of Minecraft. Assuming Wii U edition will be a thing (highly likely), that's 10 different "Minecraft" games!
Here's the catch: You have to pay separately for each game. Now of course there's little upgrade deals (like the free upgrade from Xbox 360 edition to Xbox One), but really. Since all of these are different games, you have to pay separately for each game. I personally find this irritating, I know the price for each one (especially Console Edition & Pocket Edition) are astronomically low, but it's still very annoying. I have already bought PC edition, why should I have to pay EXTRA for the other games, which aren't even as updated as PC edition, or pay the ridiculous pay-to-play-online fees that "Xbox Live" and PlayStation bring you?
Here's another catch: All of the different versions are not updated to the same, and do not allow online gameplay between different "editions". PC edition is (and has always been?) the most up-to-date game. Pocket Edition is literally just now getting redstone, and Console Edition just got the 1.8 features that were released last year. Not to mention, online gameplay is only supported within these separate editions of the game. (For crying out loud Xbox 360 & Xbox One edition cannot play together via Xbox Live)
I really like what Microsoft is doing with Windows 10 Edition, they're allowing players from different devices to play together. Which is something that really needs to happen. All of these Minecraft versions all have separate communities because of this. It's also rumored that cross-play between PC, phone, and Xbox (One I'm assuming) will be supported with Windows 10 Edition. Which is really awesome and I cannot wait for that.
Now for the solution? It's not practical, as it's too much work and would really screw up all these different versions that already exist. Here's what I think anyway. Take all of these separate Minecraft editions, get them to where they all have the same features and are all up-to-date. Then allow online cross-play between said versions. (Probably the exceptions would be Xbox & PS4 as they profit off of their ridiculous pay-to-play-online services)
Then maybe the pay separately for each version would be worth it.
TL_DR; There's way too many different versions of the game - they don't have multiplayer support between each edition of the game - and are not all up-to-date with each other. Needs to be fixed before any "new" editions of the game come (like this Wii U rumor).

Please do take time to read this post (or as much as you can, I know it's very lengthy) before going full-out rage mode & disagree entirely. I understand that probably none of this is going to happen but I'm sharing my thoughts anyways. Let me know if any statements I made are incorrect, I'll fix it. Also, let me know your opinion, I want to hear it!
Aaand you have to pay for the whole package for different versions of other games, right?
THAT WAS SARCASM
You still have to pay twice to get it on your Fire OS and your Android device, for the same game, mind you. It's not worth it because none of the games are up-to-date anyways, besides maybe Pocket Edition being a nice thing to have.
This is really true and all's it really is is another way for them to bring in more funding and more money. That's the driving towards everything on the market, the money.
Part of it is that some versions use different coding languages. I could go on and on, but long story short it's not as easy like you think it is.
Actually, the different languages used to program the different version of the games is not why they could not be played together. The packets sent over the network to create multiplayer servers are language agnostic. You can write a server that receives these packets in any language to interact with the clients.
While it would be nice to pay $30 once and get all the editions, it's just lol any other game: you pay for each different version. Mojang has all these different versions because they can't all be coded in the same language with the same setup. Mojang works primarily on the PC version and updates to all other versions follow. And don't ask why there can't be something that converts the PC version to pocket because it's like telling one person who knows Spanish to give a message to someone who knows English without google translate it something.
In order for there to be "one MC" that you have to buy for all devices, all the different versions would have to be 'dumbed down' to work with the lowest common denominator- a phone and/or tablet. I'm sure you all will like giving up your version-exclusive features, mods, servers, and other customizations like skins, texture & resource packs, etc..... and starting from scratch with a new "vanilla" version (that probably won't work on Sony consoles).
And don't forget that MC is "under new management" so you can forget the "old way" of doing things. Also never forget that MS's priority is to recoup their huge investment.... yes, that means from you and me.
those of you wondering why i don't have an active RP (so far none). i try. but whenever i get to the rules section of it my computer restarts. computer: i realise what your telling me and i give up.
I think that solution makes sense. That would also allow all of the modpacks to get up to date.
The thought of having crossover capability though, while a good idea, I don't think it will happen. That would require Microsoft, Apple, Sony, and any other company with a product that has minecraft to make a joint agreement to cross over minecraft on their devices. Whenever a new product comes out, the companies will need to work to make that compatible with the other devices. Then there is the thought of modded servers. Last time that I checked (not being sarcastic or anything) only the PC version had mods.
unfortunately, i don't think that C++ and Java can communicate with each other.
as for the post above me, Minecraft is NOT under new management, Mojang is owned by microsoft, but microsoft has no control over Minecraft
Yes, there's that problem, they aren't written the same. Also, how would you cross-play something like PE and the Xbox or Xbox and PC? Possibly there's a way, but not one I know of.

That's funny. Don't tell me that MS doesn't have a say in what Mojang does. True, Mojang's employees stayed the same, but guess who came up with the "idea" for them to write a "Win10" version (that uses, cough cough, Live)? I sure don't think Mojang came up with the idea themselves.
I think the best solution is for Mojang to stop development of the (5 year old) java version and concentrate on MC2 in C++. Should only take them about a year, more or less. It should have better... everything, and incorporate some version of some of the a few of the more popular mods (ie, shaders). Now that we've had a taste of what MC could (and should) run like, I see no reason the whole thing can't be better. It's funny that I saw a mega-thread about how silly the "nostalgia" players are... but aren't those who want MC to stay like it is also being "nostalgia" freaks. afraid of something new?
You guys don't know what you're missing. I really don't see why everyone isn't screaming from the rooftops for MC2. It's way overdo.

I apologize for not knowing but which version is MC2?
I think that there are a lot of editions is good because many people can play if they don't have a PC. However I understand your point.

Sacveverall has told me in a Private Message that he's stated in the official news reports on the front page that microsoft has no interaction with Minecraft. i can even give you proof.

Microsoft can still do whatever the heck they want to with MC though, but they're just smart enough to know NOT to intervene, because they know they would screw the whole thing up...

Um, Sacheverell doesn't work for Mojang. None of the Mojang workers are moderators on this forum.
Also yes Microsoft has had interaction with Mojang, Windows 10 Edition and "Wii U Edition" are created by "Microsoft Studios"

It is good how there are so many editions. Why? So if someone can't get the original, they can still play the Xbox or PE editions.
