Yeah, Guardians will kill innocent squids that are just squidging around minding their own business.
Creepers, though, aren't so peaceful. A totally innocent Steve, living peacefully in a house in a village, helping the villagers harvest their crops, bringing them things to trade, and harming no one and nothing, will still be attacked by a creeper. And that creeper will blow up any sheep that happen to be nearby, or villagers, or anything else. So, um, yeah. Monsters.
Steve represents humanity. To survive and evolve he Braves many lands, fights many battles, builds many things.Doesnt that represent the way humans and humanity evolved throughout time?
I know this is 3 years old, but I'm still gonna answer it:
Personally, Steve is what the player makes them, but if we're gonna talk about what the majority of people who play Minecraft make of Steve then the answer is Villain, simply put Steve (the player but I'm gonna call him steve for the sake of it) kills many animals for their survival only, if it was about a lot of people he's feeding then it would be understandable, but no, also, Steve invades other worlds to hunt the people in them, like the nether, or the end, or the endcity, and Steve raids villages to take their stuff, most hostile mobs have good reasons to attack Steve such as invading their world or when pillagers get invaded by Steve so they defend themselves.

I voted for hero because i play him as one. And because you can play Steve as whatever you want it to be ( or just re-skin from Steve default to any other skin) you can be whatever you wish to be
Its a bit like rea life no?
Whos stopping you to pick up a boulder and smash a ally cat?
Or to take a saw and go in the wilderness and cut down trees for no reason?
If youre starving in the wilderness and see a wild pheasant, would you not hunt it and kill it so you can survive?
If you have a lot of mouths to feed, dont you make large crops? Farm pigs for their meat? Gather resources to create the best living conditions possible with shelters that keep you warm and dry from weather outside?

I don't like giving too much info about the seeds i share. I feel like its better to let others explore and find out the chest contents, dungeon places and biomes. If someone is giving me a gift i would rather not know what it is until i open it for my self.
I would say he is a hero. Is killing for food and protection bad? Or cutting down trees and mining to build a shelter bad? It's part of surviving, humans have used the land since the start of their existence, even animals kill other animals or use the land to survive and we dont consider them evil for it.
Also, considering the size of the minecraft world, the impact of digging or building on the land is minimal.
Personnally the only real evil deed i can see in minecraft is stealing the villagers crops in their village or killing them.
I think he's a hero. He only murders animals for food, and we all do that - also, he slays monsters that kill innocent villagers. He could be a villain if the person playing him decides do murder helpless villagers and kill animals for no valid reason, but most of the time he's a hero.

heh, I was honestly going to do the same thing:
I'm almost completely inactive, in case you're trawling through really old threads and notice me somewhere.
Steve is a skin model. it depends on the user really.

'Tis my view on it.

Hero.
Much like life itself, Steve is what you make of him.

Anyone shameless enough to let a villager become a zombie, then unzombify them just to get better trades is obviously a villain.
