I recently bought Minecraft, I'm fairly new to the series, and when I started up the game for the first time I was severely disappointed :/ I just don't get it... I can't seem to bring myself to have fun. Survival seems kinda pointless to me being that everything looks the same, there's little satisfaction in exploring, and other then chests I don't see much sense in trying to brave dungeons. Not to mention the only point in survival is to build, which can be accomplished with a lot less opposition in creative mode..
There seems to be very little objective to this game. So I tried to fix my issue by downloading a few mods to add more variety and maybe some quests, but I can't for the life of me figure out how to install the mods. Not only are most mods not up-to-date with the latest version of Minecraft (1.8) but every tutorial I find as to how to install the mods is outdated and says I have to transfer modded files into a .bin folder, which doesn't exist anymore in the 1.8 version of Minecraft, or simply click the .jar file and a installation prompt will start-up, which doesn't happen for me.
Any suggestion as to how I can make this game feel more like an RPG?
Can anyone suggest a tutorial that will help me install mods?
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance guys, I'm really trying to get into the spirit of Minecraft.
Mods, Texture packs, ect. Gotta look around see what you like and go with it. Youtube has TONS of minecraft stuff. Its all about making it to how you like it which is whats so great about it. Your not stuck with just a little bit of nothing.
Does anyone have any tips about modding a 1.8 version of minecraft? Like I said towards the end of my post, I can't seem to find the .bin folder all the tutorials seems to be pointing me towards.
I was introduced to Minecraft about 2 years ago when I started watching stampylongnose/head on YouTube. Watching him have so much fun mining, building his house, and then expanding his town with his friends in his later videos got me into the Minecraft mood. If you need inspiration, I still would recommend stampy's old Minecraft Xbox videos. Start from video #1 of his lovely world.
About the mods - I can't recall the time I spent trying to get my mods to work...it must have been a good long week of research. Minecraft mods are the most confusing things you can mess with. Maybe I can help:
In the Minecraft launcher, click "Create new profile" (in the bottom-left corner). Name it something like "Mods", or "Forge", so you'll remember it's for your mods. Only use this profile for your mods!Using your normal profile may corrupt certain parts of Minecraft!
Download the recommended version of forge for the version of Minecraft you want to mod at files.minecraftforge.net (e.g., the recommended version of forge for Minecraft 1.7.10 is 10.13.4.1448)
Double-click the installer. Click "install client".
Open your launcher. In the bottom-left corner, select the profile you made earlier (mine is "Forge") and click "Edit Profile". Around the middle of the screen you'll see a drop-down box with all the versions of Minecraft installed, dating back to v1.0. Select the version of Forge you installed, which should read "release (version of minecraft)-Forge(version of Forge)"
Now, the mods. Download the mod(s) you want to use. Make sure that you got the right version of Forge for the version of Minecraft the mods are designed for. (e.g., make sure they're both for 1.7.10 or 1.6.4 etc.) Make a folder in your .minecraft folder called "mods". Place the mods into this folder. (.minecraft will be located in "C:\Users\YourName\AppData\Roaming\.minecraft". AppData is a hidden folder)
Now start up Minecraft with the version of Forge you installed earlier. Make sure you're using the profile you made!
I've only ever modded Minecraft 1.6.4, 1.7.2, and 1.7.10. I can't guarantee this will work with older or newer versions of Minecraft.
Look at youtube videos, and minecraft tutorials, and try to find something that inspires you to survive, or build something in minecraft. Also, its much funner if you play it with friends!!
Not sure if I can help you with mods, but I think understanding the game helps you enjoy survival. Survival is about the challenge of building an empire from nothing, and literally having to get all your resources. You can enchant, upgrade tools and weapons, and eventually even defeat the enderdragon. Creative helps you build more impressive and elaborate structures, but will no challenge other than time and planning. I used to be confused on how to go about doing survival, so I stuck to creative. Once you know how to gather the right materials and craft the right things, it's a lot more fun. If you need any more help just ask.
With making it more fun, just look up challenges on the forums. Also look up challenging seeds. It's kinda hard to find seeds that aren't like "Five villages near spawn, and tons of diamonds in blacksmiths!", but I've found a few that are actually good for the survival aspect of the game. Also, there's always the one aspect of the game I'm still new to, commands. I know a lot of commands are just cheating, but there are some that actually make the game harder. Right now I'm playing a survival world in a snow biome with regeneration turned off. (Seed for snow biome: -5074204979094394380 Command for no regeneration: /gamerule naturalRegeneration false)
Hey well if you are looking to get into modding i have 3 suggestions for you:
1. is use an older version of minecraft. most mods are behind by at least 1 major release and you will find a much better variety on 1.7.10 currently.
2. There are 2 groups that actually build modpacks for others. you can download their launchers and pick from a variety of compatible and mostly stable modpacks. There services are Feed The Beast. and Tekkit. google them.
3. Join a multiplayer server. Especially on a modpack multiplayer server are really great to play on and have fun. both FTB and Tekkit have a forum with a section for servers.
Play some multiplayer with friends, look up some servers that peak your interest. Weather you like minigames, trying to survive, or building fun structures in creative, I'm sure you'll find a server that fits you. I wouldn't start with mods yet if I were you, you are new, but whatever you think will be fun try it! The servers are down currently, but I'm sure they'll be back up in a few hours
I recommend you go on a big server and play some mini games. I wouldn't know any hub servers with lots of mini games for beginners (Considering i started 4-5 years ago back in beta versions of the game). I Would not recommend mods for a while, since failures get in your head, and using mods as a beginner is extremely difficult! If you really want to play with mods, here is 2 videos that are good tutorials for modding: .
Here are some hub servers i also recommend. They do have advanced players on them (People who have played for like 6 years).
Does anyone have any tips about modding a 1.8 version of minecraft? Like I said towards the end of my post, I can't seem to find the .bin folder all the tutorials seems to be pointing me towards.
those are not good tutorials. Those are back all the way from "beta 1.8" which was a version released in 2010/11. Mojang removed the bin folder in 1.6. Here are two 1.6 tutorials (1.6 is the same as 1.8)
Mods delete my post on this thread....what the ........ Ugh I call that sort of like mod abuse. I don't think its right just deleting posts. For real, am i blind...or my computer was wrong, because i doubt a staff would delete that. MAYBE I didn't press Post Reply but Preview!
Anyways, here
Try multiplayer, it really fun for me. Singleplayer is lonely and boring in my eyes. I spend 95% of my time in Multiplayer, and when i go to singleplayer, its usually to test something out for Multiplayer or I give it a try, just to give up a hour and never touch the world again.
If you don't know how to do it (mod your game), start downloading the FTB launcher - just select the mod pack and wait to download. That's how you start with mods when you just start playing Minecraft.
Forget the "research" and "tutorials" as a first step - go try some mod packs and try to have fun instead of break your game countless times before you can even start.
The only problem is that you don't like exploring... and looks like you're not a fan of building stuff. So...
Stop telling him to get mods. You need to try and enjoy the game for itself before you go onto mods, if you can't enjoy vanilla, chances are it's not your type of game. It's sad that so many people think the game is boring without mods, watch youtube videos and see the amazing and fun things you can do.
The reason you will struggle with getting mods for the latest version of Minecraft is simply that 1.8 modding isn't very popular. To my knowledge, 1.8 required extreme changes to the code used in 1.7.10 mods, just to make them compatible. A lot of modders haven't taken this leap. If you plan on using a lot of mods, I suggest sticking with 1.7.10.
As for your enjoyment, the game just isn't for everyone. There are numerous goals, and the game is most about seeing how far you can go. Kill the few bosses the game has, get rare items, build large structures, do whatever. If you want to be the type who wants to do things with 'less opposition', then go ahead. I think that's stupid, but do as you wish, whether that means playing only on creative mode or just not playing. I find myself playing very little ast the moment, and I think I am playing more creative mode to goof about with command blocks and such. If you just want to build, go to creative and build anything, or earn it in survival. I am not trying to make either sound bad or lazy here, both are fine ways to play.
At the end of the day, you should stop looking for one focused endgame goal to trump all others, because there isn't one. If you don't like that, fair enough. But give it a chance.

Do some research, look at some youtube videos. Playing survival is a lot more fun than you think, I can promise you that.

Maybe you just need to start with a different seed that sparks your interest.
Try: http://www.minecraftforum.net/forums/minecraft-discussion/seeds/2169576-minecraft-1-7-10-seed-spawn-2-npc-villages-plains
or: http://www.minecraftforum.net/forums/minecraft-discussion/seeds/2125126-cool-spawn-diamonds-npc-village-desert-temple
Apparently you'll spawn near villages which will give it more of an RPG feel.
Also, apparently when the servers are down a long time lurker is forced to post...

Well, the .bin files are in the Versions folder, and then in the 1.8 folder if I recall correctly.
