The Windows 10 edition is basically Pocket Edition ported to the Win10 platform. It's entirely separate to the PC edition and is limited in a variety of ways. No, the regular PC edition will not break with Windows 10. Yes, it will still work. Yes, you can install and play both editions at the same time.

Someone make this a sticky. I'm pretty sure you just answered all the questions about the Win10 Beta version (all the important ones for people upgrading Windows at least).

Hence why I listed them.

I am just confused as to why this Edition exists personally. I already had minecraft and had no desire to play the pocket edition with a mouse and keyboard lol.

To my knowledge I'd presume it's for compatibility reasons. Pocket Edition is restricted to Android / iOS, however with Microsoft's plan to release Windows 10 as a multi-platform OS, that is the one OS is used on different platforms so the same Windows 10 OS you use on your desktop can go on your tablet, phone and Xbox One. Re-releasing a form of Pocket Edition using Windows 10 expands the reach, so that Windows 10 devices of all forms can play Minecraft and work together. Currently there's no way to play on a friend's game on PE without an emulator on a PC, however with Windows 10 edition this will be possible.
Or, you could flip this around and say it's a plot for both Mojang and Microsoft to cash in from Windows 10 being a multi-platform OS. I'm going for the first assumption though.

In my opinion, the Windows 10 version, and any versions that are released afterwards based off of the Windows 10 version and coded in something other then Java, will become the only versions at some point in the future. It makes perfect business sense for Microsoft.

For the <insert number here> time, Microsoft isn't affecting the development of the game. Microsoft and Mojang are simply business partners, the game and development of the game still belongs to Mojang, Microsoft is just the "parent" company of Mojang. The game is not going to change just because Microsoft is part of things now.

Thanks, I think I will stick with the regular pc edition.

Because the pocket edition runs better than regular minecraft since it's not in Java. added controller support. I'm pretty sure it's also going to be the version that holo-lens uses(not confirmed I'm just assuming). It's also great if you have a surface and can switch between controls based on where you are.
Yeah it's more limited, but over time that's going to improve. And It's probably also going to get a lot of PC features like the end pushed for pocket edition. I also wouldn't be surprised if down the line the Windows 10 edition ends up merging with the xbox1 version, so you have one universal app across all 3 platforms.

Java is not the cause of the lag with Minecraft. Java can be just as fast as C/C++. The reason my Minecraft lags is because of the horribly optimised code.

As it stands, from this point on, Java Minecraft is essentially dead. Praise the Lord!

Being a store app it's easy to install and as its coded in C++ it runs like a dream, so dum-dum users don't have to mess around with that ugly mess known as Java to get a half-decent gaming experience.
Hopefully, they will develop it to a point where it surpasses original Minecraft.
If Notch had taken his programming beyond the classroom level of Java and knew how to code in C++ it would probably be a different story.
As it stands, from this point on, Java Minecraft is essentially dead. Praise the Lord!
A. Java is not what is wrong with the game and why it lags. If the game was written well enough Java would run just as well as C/C++ would. The problem is the game's horribly optimised code hasn't been rewritten in forever, which Mojang is now fixing.
B. Please tell me how PC Minecraft is, quote, essentially dead, unquote. Far as I can see, it still remains the most used platform the game is available on.
C. It has been confirmed by both sides that Microsoft is merely a business partner, not intruding on the development of the game, so, no, it's not because Microsoft owns Mojang now.
D. It has also been confirmed that the Windows 10 edition is essentially a Win10 version of Pocket Edition, it's entirely separate from the PC edition. So, no it won't surpass the PC edition nor is it planned to.
