Okay, so I was just thinking a little bit about enchantments and how they work. My question is, if you have a diamond chestplate with protection 4 on it, do you take the same amount of damage as if you were to wear full protection 4 diamond armor.
The reason I'm asking this is because it's impossible to get armor with all of the enchantments on it without manually doing it in creative mode and stuff like that. So when you go out to pvp, is it best to wear full protection 4, or would you be better of wearing one thing on protection 4, one of fire protection 4, and so on.
There is this article on the wiki on it, read it, it should clear things up.
But to answer your question right away: Wearing full Protection IV is your best option in PvP, the other resistances are nice but as Protection protects against ALL damage it is still the best way to go, seeing that if you have full Prot IV you'll most likely have Fire Resistance potions too.
Impossible to get armor with all enchantments unless you are in Creative? Do you mean placing multiple enchantments on one piece? Even then you need a third-party NBT editor or a mod to do that; vanilla won't allow you to combine e.g. Protection and Fire Protection. Otherwise, it is rather easy to enchant full Protection IV diamond armor in Survival, especially with the 1.8 enchantment mechanics, and even in older versions you can enchant a lot of books for 1 level each and combine them - without ever directly enchanting a piece of armor.
Also, full Protection IV diamond armor is indisputably better than just one piece with Protection IV, whether that is just one piece by itself or one out of four pieces - think of Protection as adding more armor points; the Wiki describes how it works here.
For example, full diamond armor reduces damage by 80%, excluding sources that bypass armor, such as falling. Full Protection IV further reduces the damage that gets through by a random 40-80%, adding 8-16% more protection for a total of 88-96% damage reduction (which is far more effective than the absolute increase would suggest; damage received is based on the damage that gets through, which decreases from 20% to as little as 4%, a fivefold decrease; for the same reason diamond armor is twice as protective as iron). Note that damage sources that normally bypass armor, such as falling, are also reduced, but only by the 40-80% Protection provides.
As for the other forms of Protection, you can get a higher average damage, which is still capped at 80% while the minimum can get up to 50% for an average of 65% (60% for Protection IV) but considering that they only work against specific sources of damage you are best off with Protection (note that Feather Falling can be combined with Protection, so you can include that, but with full Protection IV you only need Feather Falling I to reach the maximum; conversely, with Feather Falling IV you can reach the maximum with one each of Protection IV and Protection II, so in that case it can be more useful to include it).
