Personally, I find gravel to be the most useless thing. I end up collecting huge chests full of the stuff, and it really isn't useful beyond a few speciality circumstances.
Although that being said, isn't that the case for a lot of the things in the game? Useless except for a few specific circumstances?
You may be able to eat it, filling up a whopping 1/2 of 1 hunger like the potato, but unlike the potato or other fish, you can't cook it to increase the effect. At least the pufferfish can be used in water breathing potions.

I can't understand the point of this thread now. Every item has a use right? It's just that some items have less/smaller use than the other... Hence stuffs like coarse dirt, poisonous potato,etc... They're rarer variants of another common item but has same/less use. You can't even plant poisonous potato to grow another potato..
To me, the most useless item is the minecart with a furnace.
This antiquated piece of crap was replaced by gold rails a long, long time ago. It was a good idea, in theory. But it was way too slow, it lacked any user interface, it lacked power, it was not dependable, and it was expensive. You had to have a chain of them just to get a minecart up a long ramp. And what if one ran out of coal before you got to the top? The whole chain would come crashing down. It was just... never implemented well. So they went with the much-easier-to-code power rails.

Every item do have a use and we're troubling about that. But it's the problem of the threadmaker.
I think the most useless block in Minecraft would have to be dirt. New players may find it to be a valuable building material (due to the presence of dirt everywhere above ground) however players will quickly learn that just about ANY OTHER block is better than dirt. Plus, dirt's health makes it impossible for a nearby creeper to NOT blow it up. (Unless the damage of the creeper was changed).

Even though the presence of it in a Minecraft world, it's important for getting food. Without dirt you can't farm for food, or breed animals since animals give food too. And there are lots of building material other than dirt...

True, but it IS possible to scrape by on rotten flesh and potatoes dropped by zombies. Plus theres mutton, rabbit meat, pig meat, cow meat, chicken. which can be obtained from dead mobs (later on using looting swords) and cooked. Or you could use the /give command, but thats no fun. The Thrill of the hunt...
Most people dislike those, but they're not useless. You need to think about it.

Poisonous Potato

Book and quill? How about writting down cordinates of your home and special places in it when venturing?
Gravel.... There are annoying in caves, I only break them to get their flint, and as bad looking cheap road material.
And Coarse Dirt. They're harder to get than dirt obviously, but don't looks so different and acts just like normal dirt....
Quite pointless to use them while you can use the much more common dirt.

Poisonous Potato
Sarcasm doesn´t mean what you think it means, It means what you don´t think it means, so it means what you don´t think it means, simple!
Not "quil" but "quill". And not "cordiantes" but "coordinates". That's a pretty good idea, actually.
...Both of them has a use.
umm...

The clownfish.

Aside from the myriad of useless potions...

ThanatosMace
people say the most useless thing is lapis lazuli but I say other wise
Boats are the most useless! They are too brittle!
I have only conquered the End. Now I will conquer the world
Units! Onward to the rest of MineCraft!
Useful when mining.

What do you say then?
Era 2 of my MCF time: "The Return"
