For awhile I thought that I was afraid of hostile mobs, as the jumps scares would make me jump out of my skin. But I realized that I don't really have any problems topside. Most of the time I don't even bother sleeping through the night. I like to roam the land hoping to find skeletons so that I can use bonemeal to grow crops faster. I even play Creeper tag, where you hit a creeper once and then run away before it can explode.
But that all changes when I start exploring caves. The absolute worst is when I'm in a large room-like area that has several connecting tunnels that make it impossible to keep an eye on simultaneously. Anxiety builds up quickly as I attempts to place torches as fast as I can. But even if I'm just traveling down a tunnel I can feel anxiety building up. And if a hostile mob jumps out of the darkness, it freaks me out so bad that I often have to quit the game.
Has anyone experienced the underground being a trigger for anxiety?
Yea i have this but as bad i quickly try to light up a giant chunk of the cave around me. except the mobs dont really bother me above ground i think thats because underground you can have mobs sneak up on you much easier. And having mods that increase the difficulty massively and adds a lot of mobs make it much worse >.>
Mobs underground don't bother me but I can get anxious when I get lost underground -- which happens basically every time I wander into a cave system. Even though I know I can just dig to the surface if I really need to (and frequently I really need to) I can often get excessively relieved when I finally get back to the surface and to familiar landmarks -- as if I were coming home IRL and not just in a computer game!
If that scares you, do not install the Giant Caves mod -.- I have spent an entire day trying to light a cavern floor with torches. It feels kind of like trying to take back a battlefield
Dude, yes! I am a jumpy type of person. When I'm underground trying to light up the caves, if I see mobs. I just jump at the sight of them. And I'm an Adult!
But when I play with my friend on Split Screen (I'm on PS3,) I suddenly don't get scared or jumpy anymore. Minecraft is literally like a scary movie when I play by myself. lol.
Oh I absolutely despise jungles! Too much going on, too dense. I never go into them, and if I start out in one the first thing I do is get away from it.
Huh, now that I'm thinking about it, I wonder if it has something to do with claustrophobia?
I get somewhat more anxious in caves, but proportionately to the danger - it's not out of line with how I feel about being outside at night. I *do* have a somewhat irrational fear of large drops, likely associated with my mild real-life vertigo. Your reaction to caving does sound something like a phobic reaction. Do you have claustrophobia?

Not really. Back then, I was scared of going near caves but that was during Beta 1.4_01 era when I just started playing. Now, I go charging in the dark and kill everything even if they surround me and hit me endlessly. After killing them, I start planting torches. I like to think that I'm playing Hyrule Warriors. That helps my confidence in destroying everything in my path.
Working in the ocean monument before I drained it definitely made me nervous -- I haven't been SCUBA diving in years, but when you learn they really drill into you how incredibly dangerous it is to go into overhead envrionments -- that is, things like caves or shipwrecks were you have something overhead and can't go directly to the surface if you get into trouble. Without special training an overhead environment is basically a death waiting to happen and even people properly equipped and trained die with uncomfortable regularity. They don't even need to have giant one-eyed fish with Thorns and laser beams to do you in. So I guess something deep in my brain was telling me I was lost in an overhead environment even though obviously it's just a computer game.
Caves I have no problem with. Even the massive ones. I loved the cave dimension from BWG mod. Water on the other hand...no, sir. It's mostly not being able to see and in RL there are some fairly large entities out there just beyond the darkness. Every single game that has deep oceans/lakes that you can swim into fail to actually put something in there, even if aesthetic in nature, to mess with people like me. Rift for example...first area I started had a large lake...that hit my phobia in overdrive, but I braved the deep anyway. Such a missed opportunity by the devs. Nothing down there caused a panic-induced logout.

To bad you can't place a torch in real life to make an air pocket lol.
You wouldn't dare want to play alpha Minecraft on hard mode. Risk factor is through the roof-- you only have so many healing food items, so you have to manage how many empty inventory spaces you want and how many you want to fill with, essentially, life.
Jumpscares are common, and the "hurt" sounds don't help. Yesterday a spider caught me by surprise while I was coming out of a cave and I heard that "OOF!" sound and I jumped. It was thrilling! I love alpha Minecraft.

This might sound weird but I'm the exact opposite. I get incredibly claustrophobic in small narrow tunnels & feel quite a bit better if I find myself in cutting through one of those large round rooms or a ravine while I'm mining underground. Even though its much less efficient, I also dig all of my mines into larger 3x3 tunnels rather than 1x2 because I just can't stand being in a tiny enclosed tunnel going on as far as the eye can see.

Yes especially when it plays that scary wind sound, scares the crap out of me, it's like mine, mine, mine. Then you find a cave, walk through it while literally waiting for an arrow or explosion or a spider sound or a groan behind me, then I usually turn around and never go back ever.

I get some anxiety if I get lost and have a full inventory of loot.
I have a fear of deep water. The darker it is the worse it is. So...I only work underwater in MC if I have certain potions handy...

I've never actually been underwater in MC, not in the deep ocean anyway. I imagine it would be pretty intimidating.

When I was younger I did a lot. When it was nighttime outside in real life I wouldn't dare mine.

On a new world I always feel a bit paranoid mining, but never really scared.
