The griever IS a child because it's incredibly immature. Someone who does not grief IS "higher up" than someone who grieves. Both mentally and morally.
But why are all those things fun, thats the real question.
Why does someone find it fun to hurt someone else? yes its only a game, but some people will spend hours and hours making a nice house and then this jerk comes along and destroys it for 'fun', is their really any difference to say me putting up a nice fence along my gsarden one summy afternoon onto to find some guy has kicked it in because he thought it would be 'fun'?
The fence kicking in is less likely to happen because its destruction of property and an offence (i guess everywhere but some places it could be legal)
Online people have this magic bubble they sit in thinking 'oh who cares if i upset someone or cause them mental trauma i'm on-line and invincible and no one can find me'
People are sociopaths, that is why it is considered fun. You have someone who has been mentally tormented all day able to lash out against others with zero non-online consequences. Throw in dehumanization that occurs when you do not see someone and you got a recipe for a Griefer.
Now I find nothing wrong with looting (you build a statue with resources I want, I am going to take said resources) but destruction for the sake of destruction isn't cool (but I will condone it).
ON PVP servers griefing is allowed but you can make friends to defend yourself the bad thing is that on Survival ones the griefers tend to search big holes on the server rules to grief or "Troll" other players.the ones i hate most are the ones that BREAK the rules in front of everyone and just because he is a admins friend he can do what he wants, thats the worst type of griefer the one that has POWER.but the reason why almost everytime is because they dont care about other people feelings the just think they will be cool because they made a player that is better than them get angry.but the griefer has a weakpoint and is when it gets griefed.
You don't like laying waste to a donator faction's base? You don't like wastelands of where bases formerly were at? Also, griefer admins are actually pretty mean. Ran into some many years ago. Filled my bro's skyscraper with obsidian. It was a ban trap so my brother didn't say anything about it.
I don't care when my things get griefed. My valuables are inside an ender chest.
Leadership is not based on control or dominance... people follow great leaders voluntarily because they respect them. Despots don't lead, they terrorize. Also, I think the destruction comes from a feeling of not having sufficient control over whatever/whoever... so they opt to destroy or harm it to try to gain more control over it.
Lead:
be in charge or command of.
Despots by definition lead.
Every human government is based on control and dominance, it is called the monopolisation of violence. That State holds the sole legal ability to inflict, and to give permission to inflict, violence on anyone who violates it's laws. We do not follow the laws because we have a great respect for our congressman (US), most people cannot even name their congressman [citation]. We follow the laws because we do not the state to bring harm upon us, thus it is in our best interest to work within the laws to get what we need done.

I agree, the real question is, why are those things fun? Its not good enough to just say, because its entertaining, we need to work out why people find it entertaining and a valuable investment of time. For this there could be many reasons. The first, and in my experience, the most common one is plain immaturity. This is why griefing is mostly associated with the younger gamers out there, and its the same situation as when a young child knocks over a sand castle. In this example its not as easy to identify the reason to it, and so is something that just kind of has to be dealt with. The real problem is when people take it further than just that random urge to destroy, and turn it into a hobby. In this instance, its probably more to do with them being unable to deal with real life issues. Its just a fact of life that when you are feeling upset or depressed, whether consciously or not, you often try to make other people feel worse about themselves. Griefing can be this same reaction, but in a situation when the person maybe doesn't realise that there is something getting them down...
I see Greifers as individuals who simply are to lazy to put the effort into the game, so they steal, and are jealous of other peoples work so they destroy it.
I am a griefer myself, and I honestly do not think this is what we griefers are at all. We have common motives most of the time, either obe of the four I see most commonly, Amusement, Revenge, Destruction, Resources.
From my experience I have only really seen it as a means of trolling someone (small jokes) or it is done out of bordum. They just cant come up with things to do so they troll or blow things up. The "need" for destruction is one of the stupidest excuses I've heard since so many custom maps exist one could just download one and open it in a single player world (need fulfilled).
My guess if it isn't one of the things listed above it just comes down to the same reasons people bully. Which we all know there are no "legitimate" reasons for that.
100% of grievers are children. Immature, cowardly, low-life children.
It doesn't matter how long the griever has been alive, their actual intelligence and personalities are those of 6-year-olds.
These people who lack compassion and enjoy ruining other's experiences will probably end up as low-life criminals among other lesser things.
It doesn't matter what game you're playing. Whether it's team-killing, raging, hacking or grieving, children ruin all games.
Way to generalize! I don't see where you're pulling this from because, yes, some are infact children, but yes, some of us are infact, not children.
Immature? I admit, some of the griefers are prettyyyyy immature, but not all of them, certainly not all of them. And how would we end up as low life criminals? Lacking compassing and enjoying ruining others expierence, not always, just their creations, ONLINE, not realy in real life.
I would check my reply for errors and make this longer but I am running out of time! Goodbye! And have a nice day!

I find the argument that it exists online and not in real life to be a rather weak excuse. A piece of music can have just as much of an effect on somebody if its played on an instrument or created through a digital program. A build requires time and effort, and is no less impressive than something created in real life with the same amount of effort...

Same principle as your definition of a despot.
The thing about definitions is they can be selectively slanted:
Leadership - ""a process of social influence in which a person can enlist the aid and support of others in the accomplishment of a common task".[1] For example, some understand a leader simply as somebody whom people follow, or as somebody who guides or directs others,[citation needed] while others define leadership as "motivating and organizing a group of people to achieve a common goal" (from Wikipedia).
Despotism - "Despotism is a form of government in which a single entity rules with absolute power....Colloquially, despot has been applied pejoratively to a person, particularly a head of state or government, who abuses their power and authority to oppress their people, subjects or subordinates. In this sense, it is similar to the pejorative connotations that have likewise arisen with the term tyrant. Dictator has also developed nearly similar pejorative connotations. (also from Wikipedia).
Ever hear of the saying - "Power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely."

So this one time, I built two pretty tall buildings. I mean really tall, they went almost as high up as you could build. They fit thousands of people! Quite some time and effort went into this project, years of planning, getting resources, the actual bulding that was a cooperative of many, many people.
- Then Al-Qaeda came, but meh, who cares? Not like it was online where it actually matters.
Terrorism, even if it's online, affect people. It's not a humane thing to do and should be severely punished.
Dude, do not compare 9/11 to a game. Just don't. It affected the people of america forever.
Also, you think griefing is terrorism? Thats just silly.
Also, most griefers want revenge on PvP masters who always troll them and steal. This however, does not make the other griefing okay.

There was a time when I griefed back in Minecraft Classic, there was a sort of thrill to it, I didn't care if I was disappointing people (In fact the thought amused me), I just enjoyed destroying things, but I never thought I was destroying something that took hours to build, once I realized how immature I was being, I stopped, I have never griefed on a non Minecraft classic server and never will, though there have been times when I took resources from a already griefed build that has been long forgotten, but I would never destroy or take apart something that was fully in tact, and I will never grief again.
Some people just like to mess with with other people. Same reason why PvP is so much more popular then regular survival gameplay. Why work together, when you can troll people?
I don't grief btw, so I don't know if anything I say is true. It seems very likely to me, though.
Yes, those people are called sadists who are obsessed with feeling superior to others. Multiplayer is now becoming antisocial. Minecraft will devolve into a game where you torture another player as long as you pay. I don't know if its possible for a child to have sadistic personality disorder.
"HUEHUEHUE YOUR PAIN IS MY JOY HUEHUEHUE I LOVE WATCHING PEOPLE SUFFER HUEHUEHUE IM SO KOOL" Says a random 7 year old.
It's just a human tendency for sadism. I cringe whenever I see an 8 year old with an ipad.
