I've heard a lot about servers referred to as FTB or Feed The Beast. I have absolutely no clue what that means. How does this type of server differ from a normal survival server? Are there mods that I need to have knowledge about? Do I need to install any mods? Thanks in advance!
FTB is a group of people that work on many modpacks, look them up. There's no complicated installation process, just install the launcher and choose a pack. Just keep in mind, it is very laggy if your computer isn't the best. As for the servers, they're just servers that have one of the modpacks installed. Hope this helped!
Do I need to install the modpacks to play on the servers? (I have no mods or texture packs installed at all.)
Yes you need to have the same exact version of the modpack that the server has or you won't be able to join. FTB has several different modpacks, there isn't just one, find out what modpack the server is running and install that one.

To tell them how to live is to prevent them living.
Yes, but I recommend you do so in a separate storage folder directory. The launcher is designed to be very convenient for the installation of the modpacks, so you just need to select one and click "launch", and it will do everything else for you. One more thing, certain modpacks, mostly the third party ones, are designed to work with a map that is pre-installed with the modpack whenever you attempt to create a new world, so if you're playing modpacks such as Material Energy^4 or Running Red 2: Vampire Money, you can't really play them in a typical survival world, as they were meant and designed for their associated maps.
Feed the Beast (Aka. FTB), is a Minecraft launcher for running "modpacks" which contain any number or kind of mods in one complete package. The system is similar to Technic (which is also very good so try it out) although from my knowledge its harder to get 3rd party modpacks on FTB as compared to all of the official modpacks. They have all sorts of varieties of modpacks for example one with: Tech, Machines, Magic, RPG and lots more! It also has the ability to add resource packs for your chosen modpack (only a few though). It takes a little bit to install the launcher/modpacks but totally worth the wait! The official site is here: http://www.feed-the-beast.com/
This is the FTB description from the developers if you want it straight from the horses mouth:
Mod Packs
Feed The Beast offers many different styles of modpacks to the community, catering to all tastes. From FTB’s Monster and the Direwolf20 pack catering to all round play to more focused packs like Tech and Magic world. We also host some of the best 3rd party packs ever made including Agrarian Skies, BloodNBones, Crash Landing and many more. You can find more details on some of our packs here or on the launcher.
Maps & Texture Packs
The launcher also gives you the ability to install many different texture packs and maps specific to the pack you are playing. They can be installed at the click of a button and include maps played by the youtubers that play the packs, challenge maps to test your knowledge of the mods and some of your favorite texture packs with one click installs. You can download and install texutre packs or modpacks via launcher.
There are tons of different modpacks to choose from in the launcher. It basically creates a new .minecraft folder that is made for the modpack you choose. You don't need to install any mods yourself, the launcher does it for you. Download the FTB launcher, select a modpack you want to play, hit the install button. It creates a new .minecraft in a separate directory. There are dedicated FTB servers, you just need to look around. I would recommend Magic World to start, it's super fun. You can also add some mods manually if you like.
