there are servers that forbid such act's, They ban the players who do it and roll back the server so your stuff is returned - they don't actually prevent it from happening. best bet is to find one in the servers section of this forum.
I would recommend playing on a server with the Towny plugin. It is very popular, and here's the gist of it: Players can either join someone elses town, or make their own. Everything they build is protected, as long as it's in a town. A good server that has towny is pwing.net However, you can also look in the "Servers" tab at the top for a protected server, or just search the good ol' interwebz. of course, singleplayer is a great option as well.
He was probably playing "factions". Factions is a gamemode where everyone tries to steal everyone elses stuff and get more powerful. It is ruthless and can make alot of people angry. I would reccomend either a "Towny" server, a "Minigame" server such as Hypixel or singleplayer.
I feel as if your son is posibly playing on a server where that is supposed to happen. Commonly know as "Factions", the point of factions is to raid, destroy and "conquer" each other. I suggest you find out the server he is playing first so we know what game mode he is playing, ex. Factions (for raiding etc.), survival (where you survive), and mini games ( just games, not much possibility of destroying each other's creations.) there are MORE games types out there these are just some of the more popular ones. As for looking for other servers, go to the internet and type in "Minecraft servers" then from there, there should be websites with lists and types of server he can play, keep in mind that different servers offer different gameplay! Good luck with your searching!
Thanks for the suggestions. I need to work a bit on them. He has played minigames and I suppose was feeling superior and up to the task, but it seems he wasn't.
As for the specs on a server, and what pluggins and rules they may have. Sorry to ask such simple questions but I'm sure I'm not the only one dealing with this.
I can see the ip he uses, could use his login start playing, where would one see what the rules and mods are? Do most popular servers have a webpage as well? Sça√enger net something is what he was on, I'll look around to see what I find.
There are servers that do not allow that sort of behavior, it's easy to find them here in the Minecraft forums, there is a server server advertisement section, most servers have rules that are on the server forum, if griefing is against the server's rules than this kind of behavior mentioned in your forum is against the rules, if it doesn't mention anything about griefing in the rules than it's best to stay away from that server, sadly most servers have griefing players, but some servers, if not most now days have ways of preventing griefing, and the players who grief can be easily banned, just so you know Griefing is the word for players who enjoy destroying other people's stuff in Minecraft, or they enjoy stealing from other players, again some servers have protection plugins, and yes you can easily find them, so I wish you luck!
scavenger server and it says Factions on the description at the multiplayer screen. So I guess he went over his head - following his classmates recommendation.
It sounds like your child was playing on a hardcore-factions server. There are many ways to play minecraft and that is one of them. Hardcore-Factions is based heavily on finding other people's bases and destroying them. While it can be fun to destroy someone else's work, it can be the exact opposite when your work is ruined.
I would never encourage anyone to ever delete minecraft or ban someone from playing it. It is your child and you have the final say in parenting, but I would like to guide you to a path where your son can still play minecraft. The only thing that needs to change is the type of games he plays in minecraft.
The safest bet you have in this case is to restrict him to single player where he cannot even play with another person. While this may not be as fun to your son, it is the easiest, safest, and quickest way for your child to continue playing minecraft without any chance of damage to his things.
The second best alternative which will probably be the funnest for your child would be to look at mini-game/relaxed survival servers. Here are a few links to server lists with servers that do not allow what we call "griefing" (what happened to your son).
Mini-Games (These games are little games made in minecraft. These games won't even provide an opportunity for griefing to happen.)
Whitelist (Whitelist means you have to apply for your son to play here. On these servers you can trust the other players to behave as long as your son also behaves.)
RPG (These are also known as Role-Playing-Games. You will have to be a bit more careful with these as every server has a different rule set. Some servers may allow destruction and griefing, while others have harsh policies against it.)
PVE (This means Player-Versus-Environment/Everything. This is another risky one as some PVE servers allow PVP or Player-Versus-Player fighting. To simplify, these servers are usually your son surviving the dangers of normal minecraft, along with players who cannot do anything to his buildings.)
Remember to check every server yourself if possible. Some servers are a combination of all these game-types and more. I'd recommend setting strict policies with your son about which gamemodes he can play.
To follow up with the backtracking plugins, Many survival servers which can be classified as PVE have a plugin (or one similar) called logblock. This plugin allows the administrators to repair any damage, and see who caused the damage to deliver punishment.
Any questions you happen to have can be asked. Either quote my post here, shoot me a PM here on the MCF, or contact me via skype "acecard111"
I sincerely hope you find a way for your son to continue playing the great game of minecraft, while giving him a safe yet fun experience.
Banning the game from your son isn't the way to go, just look at each server he plays on and look at the rules. If griefing and stuff isn't allowed, then that might be best. Servers have different themes, and it seems like the one your son was on was an aggressive server. If no servers are good or if they don't have rules you want, maybe start up a realms server so he can play with a couple of his friends or restrict him to single player. To find servers, just go to the server section or go on PlanetMC or something. You should find a server somewhere that's right for you guys.

I'd suggest minigame servers or a whitelist server (a server that requires an application, so you won't get many griefers). Some good minigame servers include Mineplex, Hypixel, The Hive, and more. I'm pretty sure that they all have plugins blocking swears, so you won't have to worry about that. And with each server comes a different experience, so they never become stale and boring. Hope this helped!
Ivya, thanks for the info on PV*s. I'll look it up.
I'm more than capable of setting up a server for him to play multiplayer with his buddies. I had dropped that idea the day he started asking for mods? on the server to do this and that. That would have taken me more time than I would have liked.
Once again, today I offered him a plain vanilla server and he seems agreeable to that option. I'll look into the realms thingy since it seems to be exactly what I need, but it would mean another monthly bill to think about. Maybe after a few weeks of maintaining his server I'll think it's worth it.
It appears that he has played minigames already but had no Idea what a faction or duel was.
My recommendation to other parents reading into any of these threads:
BEFORE allowing him/her to play in a server understand what the server's rules/features/etc are.
If you see a lot of shorthand bad language it may not be the appropriate setting for your child (that one should have been my red flag)
If the kid is tripping out when they achieve something in a 'new' server, he will probably have an equal or worse low when they get him/her.
And although is a virtual world it feels to them as a real loss and they can't handle it - sometimes - atleast at 10yo.
Yes, you can find very child-friendly servers, where destroying/stealing and mature content/language are not allowed.
There are backtracking plugins, but that gets more complicated and only accessible by the server owner. Would be easier to just join a friendlier server.
Very informative article and list of family-friendly servers:
There are many Minecraft servers that are not going to allow those types of things. If you dont have any luck on finding any of them, you can either play on singleplayer and you will not have to deal with stuff like that, or you can go on the hive, (hivemc.eu is the ip), Mineplex, and Hypixel. Those servers have minigames that your child can play. Hope this helped!

Sounds like he jumped straight into minecraft without any idea about the minecraft community. What he needs right now is a friend's helping hand to lead him through his confusion and disappointment. It was 2 years before I was even allowed to go on public servers, and even then I was a fish out of water. He needs a friend to stick with him while he plays publicly, if he needs it.
About the finding good servers part, listen to the people above. Also really do the research, and find the right community. Minecraft servers are a great place for people of the same interests to have fun together, and most servers are good about greifers, because nobody likes them!
Hope it all works out!
(Mineplex and Hypixel as mentioned above are really good places to start)
he should play on more minigames servers then. like mineplex or hypixel. i do that and you cant destroy blocks or raid people you just play games and have fun (no trolls) But im ten so i guess im not the best person to say this considering its the only game i play lol

I have no clue to help him deal with it, so I'm considering killing the app, account, etc.
Before I do that, I'd like to ask what I couldn't find with the forum:search:
Are there servers where raids and destruction like this don't happen? How to find them?
Is there any backtracking pluggins that a server can put in place to recover someones wrongdoing?
Any comments on how to deal with this are welcome.
Thanks,
FF
