I'm pretty sure I know the answer to this but I wanted to know the typical consensus on those who have discovered recipes on his/her own accord versus those who simply look up the recipes on the Wiki page.
What is the real point if you know all of the recipes?
When i first started minecraft I tried to guess recipes as there are a few that are very intuitive and i I would get so excited when I figured them out myself...but with some recipes there is just no way you could guess them unless you spend days on end trying different combinations. So thats where I searched for them. If there was a game mechanic like books that you could find in survival world that would tell you the recipes I prob wouldn't of searched online. After a while most recipes are just from memory.
I actually had a thread asking similar questions like this a while back when researching if there was a need for an in game recipe guide. As it turned out from my thread (admittedly it did not last long), most people use the internet to learn stuff in Minecraft.

I have to use a reference, but the ones I know I actually learned from the console version. I think the only thing I don't use reference for is potions, banners, and fireworks... or anything similar to those. Don't need it for the non-crafting tables.
Certain mods were pretty strait forward, but I usually end up seeing it in a video before hand. After all I have to see a glimpse of the mod in action to at least get the gist of what it is all about; that is when I use a mod.
I do my best to remember when needed, and will fiddle around with the recipes a few times; if don't get it within a small amount of tries then I will use a reference.
Usually that means exiting the game for me, since I don't like tabbing out of games much.

My First World, always getting back to is a pleasure I enjoy with each new update that brings in more things to add in.
I have always looked up the recipe. Frustrating myself trying to figure it out on my own, or spending hours doing things the hard way because I don't know some redstone element even exists is NOT fun.
What's the point, you ask? The point hasn't changed any. Gathering what you need and building whatever your imagination can come up with. It's just an anti-frustration technique.
