Thanks to everyone who's offered their opinions. Some of the things said here really gave me a new perspective on how to view the situation. Thanks to everyone for their feedback!
Minecraft can get boring at times but if you get mods it will make the game a ton more better. Minecraft comes and goes and sometimes people will find another game but after a while people will get bored of that game and some how watch a video on Minecraft and get "re-attracted" to Minecraft and start playing again. It will come back but It'll take a while. Hope this helped
Minecraft is 3rd of all time, and arguably the most sold.
Wii sports comes bundled with the wii, and is available on disc (easier to get for a holiday of something)
Tetris has been alive for 30 years, whereas Minecraft was been alive for 5. Assuming the relationship is linear, Minecraft would actually have far more in the same amount of time.
Sales isn't the best for popularity, but it does show how many people played it or did play it. Of course, this doesn't account for the cost. Tetris is 1 or 2 dollars, where Minecraft is 26. At some point, games just become uninteresting. It doesn't matter what the game is, but Minecraft is far from dead.
All the old players the people who have been playing for a fair bit are starting to get bored. MInecraft is changing from what it originally was stuff like Microsoft buying mojang or notch leaving Mojang caused many many many (many many's later) many people to become annoyed.
It's asociated with little kids because some little kids play, it's kind of like games like zelda, all ages can play because everyone can play different. People who I were friends with mainly because of our interest in minecarft aren't really close friends anymore. I think I'm done with minecraft pretty soon myself. *sigh* I'm starting to feel this sense, this sense of lost.
Last comment from me: Just like a good story's plot you have a beginning, rising action, the climax (around 1.6.4 or what I view as the last great update) then the falling action (what many of us are feeling) then the end and that, that will come soon, that will come when the last few give a affectionate and loving goodbye. Ok I got to go cry my eyes out for the great game that will soon end. Bye! good luck!
I'm sorry to inform you, but youtubers aren't important. Sure some such as CaptainSparkelz and The Yogscast helped rapidly increase sales for the game. But the main thing to remember is that youtubes don't make Minecraft what it is, sure some are cool, but what really happens is what you are concerned about OP.
Youtubers, particularly SkyDoesMinecraft and friends, stampy and squid, they attract hordes of little children to the game who are their unwavering fanboys that won't shut up no matter how polite you ask them. I'd say the majority (if not a large portion) of players today are kids from ages 6-13, brought in by popular youtubers. They are a nuisance to the community and often make up a vocal portion of the community who screams and cries whenever they don't get their way (ironic, as that's how the forums are).

I can see what your friends mean by; "it's a game for little kids", they are partially right. These little brats have practically taken over servers and ruined multiplayer. Sure there are a few good ones, but let's face it, the majority, annoying, selfish, unintelligent, etc. But where I draw the line is where they said "nerds". Really? Nerds? Still a lousy excuse pulled by stupid jocks to make fun of kids who don't like and or play sports? This is why I HATE jocks. First, society paints them as the greatest thing ever and paints in image in the minds of women: "If he ain't skinny, tall, somewhat tan, and muscular, he's ugly and isn't worth my time". You know how that makes non-jocks feel? Absolutely terrible. Does that mean I shouldn't be able to date the pretty girls I want because I'm overweight, don't like sports or play them? Or that I have a lighter skin tone then them? No, but society and women think that way. How horribly shallow women are today. If I could become extremely strong, if I could punch every jock right in the gut until they learn a lesson, I would.
Now that I've cooled down, let's get back on topic. You are concerned about Minecraft losing popularity, no? You shouldn't be, it'd actually be a good thing. Less annoying little kids or stupid trolls would join, and leave us in peace. Minecraft is not losing popularity, intact, it gains popularity every day. It's one of the most successful games of all time, and the only thing that could possibly ruin it right now would be the very idiots that bought it about a couple of months ago. So take heart in knowing that while Minecraft is full of small, ungrateful children, it is not for "nerds". Don't listen to your idiotic athletic friends, they simply can't stop dreaming about their pathetic sports and call of duty. And do me a favor, punch them in the gut if you can (while I do not encourage violence, there is always an exception to every rule in my book).
I believe that Minecraft isn't losing popularity because I still play MC and a lot of other people do too. The kids/siblings/relatives who use to watch us play the old stages of Minecraft are now the one's Playing MC and we who don't play minecraft move on to different games like League of Legends or other stuff.
my theory, people have lost their attention span... they play something for a while, then discard what they were doing in a quick moment to go do something else...
idk but there is really a whole science based on how our attention spans are shrinking and i dont really feel like explaining it all
span>In the Future if microsoft says the will make minecraft 2 (50%) then minecraft 1 will be not popular any more...
Just to let you know Microsoft says that is not going to happen and that they're not going to do anything majour just little tiny things and bug fixes until they win our trust once they have then they'll step up to the plate and start doing stuff
There has been a massive amount of Minecraft players at my own school, and it's still rising. At least 1 out of 3 people I know play Minecraft at my school, and there are probably around a thousand students.
However, this is only my area, I assume. Also, I'm in Middle School so that may be another factor. As time goes on, people will lose interest and move on to other things, but the community is always becoming bigger.
I used to play Minecraft almost daily but now I just cannot bring myself to boot it up. I know the exact moment that Minecraft stopped being fun. As soon as I heard the Microsoft bought Mojang. I trust Mojang to do right by their supporters due to their history but I definitely do not trust Microsoft to do the same. The realization the Microsoft will eventually annual sequel, paid dlc, microtransation this fantastic game into oblivion just destroys any sense of fun I may have with this game.
I come here now just to look around and hope to see some sort of reassurance that Minecraft will not have it's heart and soul ripped out and be exploited for every cent Microsoft can bleed out this once great game. :'(

I felt theexact same way but I don't know how much trust I can give to this but they say no sequels no charges no nothing but a few bug fixes and miour changes little little things, they say that they'll start bringing full on updates with bigger updates once they've earned our trust and the right to do so. I kinda felt the same until now. PS maybe this video can help or they're both good videos I prefer the second

Finally. I see someone with this same thought, but unfortunately, this is going non-stop, much like the new CoDs or Halo 4 and The Master Chief Collection (I keep remembering the Halo 4 kids meme), kids began to infest games that were supposed to have a more mature audience, but now Minecraft is just casual gaming, even though I don't see this much on the XBLA version I use, it's nothing but a matter of time that it becomes just as ''infested'' as the pc version.
... but no, no loss of popularity. Just people moving on and such

Let's do some math.
1/3 = 0.333...
1/3 * 3 = 1
0.333... * 3 = 0.999...
1 = 0.999...
1 - 0.999... = 0.999... - 0.999...
0.0...1 = 0
0.0...1 * 10... = 0 * 10...
1 = 0
