This game had a good run, and it will probably still be played for a year or two more, but it is dying quickly. A few months ago, Mojang changed the EULA, leaving people confused for months. I'm still unclear on what exactly it accomplished, except stopping pay2win servers, but honestly, it just killed good servers. Last month, Microsoft bought Mojang, and who knows what they'll choose to do with it. they could take it off of Play Station, even though it just arrived, but they probably won't, because they would lose money, and Microsoft is a greedy company, afraid to lose a penny. Wesley Wolfe has decided he would destroy any hope of bukkit, forcing the bukkit project to remove it. He retweets peoples hatred for him too, as if it's a joke. The core of Minecraft has been ripped out from inside, leaving only a shell. The only hope the game has is if Microsoft can actually not interfere with the games' development, even though jeb, notch, dinnerbone, and many other Mojang employees stepped down. Bukkit was bought by Mojang in secret two years ago, causing many people to leave when they found out, and Wesley Wolfe to take down the entire bukkit project, saying his small contributions mean he should have the right to take it down. The EULA didn't help anything either, but it's not the biggest contributor to the ruin of the game. Minecrafts future is uncertain, indeed, but there is little hope for the game in its current state. I think most people will continue to play it, then there will be subtle changes to the game, people will want new servers to have bukkit, but that was screwed up, the EULA changes have already frustrated people, I honestly think it's lost hope.
mrbrianweldon i don't think you understand... The entire basis of most servers is bukkit. Without bukkit, people will be forced to use creative or survival. People will definitely leave... By the masses...

Slightly over-dramatic and untrue, this game will go on for many years regardless of whether it's upgraded or not.

They will or they won't?
the core of Minecraft has been ripped out from inside, leaving only a shell
The whole game is still there. If Bukkit isn't resumed and continued, there are and will be alternatives. There are people in this community way too smart to be confined to one aspect of development.
but there is little hope for the game in its current state. I think most people will continue to play it
If most people will continue to play it, then it's 'hopeful' and also doesn't signify it's demise.
people will want new servers to have bukkit
Most players don't care what runs a server, they want to get on and play. They will quite happily adapt to any alternatives.
I honestly think it's lost hope.
All those modders, mapmakers, server owners and players who are working happily away at the new stage of the game haven't lost hope.
To re-iterate - there are sections of this community who are too creative and too smart to be curtailed by either Microsoft, Bukkit, the EULA and probably any other temporary obstacle to let this game die.

Microsoft is not going to remove Minecraft from any platforms. Instead of trying to make money off of servers, start a YouTube channel that is monetized! Microsoft is still keeping that button! Who needs Bukkit that would have taken forever to update to 1.8 with its complex code when you have Spigot. Mineplex is using it, and they compromised with the new EULA by removing the fact that you don't have to be Ultra or Hero to get certain ranks anymore, you just need gems, which you get in-game from winning and certain amount of kills. The only thing that is dying is Modded Minecraft, with not as many mods coming out and Forge not updating to 1.8. I believe that Minecraft will be around for at least 6-8 more years, if not more.

Please define "The core of Minecraft" and "only a shell." Minecraft still seems fine to me. New updates being added, bugs being fixed, videos still being made. Doesn't look like anything is missing at all. Even those who hate the EULA have to agree that it wasn't Microsoft who added it.
As for these "people" that "will want new servers to have Bukkit" and "are frustrated by the EULA", kindly point them out to me.

I used to have a good signature, but it got nerfed.
Without absolutely anyone playing? Not gonna happen, not even with a MC2 release. Some people will find the original one better than the second one, and until all servers shut down, won't happen.
With less people? Definitely. It happens to every online game. Changes to the game are made, people agree or don't, some quit but others stay.
Right now, 1.8 is still recent. The changes to the EULA have been made, as far as I've read into it, to prevent P2W which is definitely a good thing. After all, if I pay for access, I want to play it in full, and not deal with microtransactions all the time or for certain (or OP) perks. Since 1.8 is still recent anyways, people need to rewrite, update or develop mods (any game with mods and major updates goes through that), so yeah, it might take some time until a good part of the community find something like bukkit.
I think dying is a big word for what the game is experiencing right now.

Ehh.. I wouldn't say that Minecraft is dying but I would say it's more of in a wierd situation. There is no way the community will let Minecraft die. Ever.
I think this whole thread is overdramatizing. There's plenty of ways you can play your favorite version of Minecraft. And if your favorite server closes, there's always the option of creating your own. "Dead" and "dying" are the wrong words for a game that's been released and is accessable. Hell, I still play games from the early 90's. "Losing popularity", "fading from the public eye" may be closer. But not even those define Minecraft as it is right now.
In the end, it's up to you to determine whether a game is "dead", but you don't get to speak for anyone else. Minecraft is far from "dead", or "dying" to me. There's too much I haven't done, too much enjoyment left to get from the game. If YOU get bored with it, don't bother broadcasting it on the forums. Just go find some shiney new thing to take up your attention and leave the people who're still enjoying the game alone.
Lol the EULA helped out servers and made Mineplex actually playable without being ultra/hero. As far as I know, no servers that were really good shut down.

Spartans never die, they just go MIA for years and nobody questions it.
Take out one community project, and all of a sudden the game is dead? That doesn't make much sense for me. I do think the game will be gone in 2+ years, but even after it is retired, there will still be people playing it.
Minecraft has already made it's mark on the video game industry's history, so I don't think that it is going to die off any time soon. It has consistently stayed within the top 10 currently most played games, for nearly 4 years, and there are tons of people buying it daily. In comparison to other games that were released in 2011, (eg. Skyrim, Batman: Arkham Origins, ect) Minecraft has done amazing. (even though Raptr isn't the greatest source, considering the player must log in to Raptr before playing for these statistics to be tracked. It is also primarily AMD-based, coming with the drivers for AMD cards.)
Microsoft buying Minecraft is just a brand-new beginning, and I think that with proper care and frequent updates, that Minecraft will continue to live for at least another 4 years.
thus making people complain about the game, thus putting Mojang in a difficult situation.
The game isn't dying, but it will soon if Microsoft tries pulling out on of it's money making strategy's.

Last I checked, you're getting a box. Of chocolates.
Darn. It is not like another alternative will be made. After all, bukkit was one in a million.
eventually it will die. like every game does.

If bukkit is dead, servers will be dead (in a way)
And possibly microsoft may add WAY more features on minecraft:xbox edition.
