I was introduced to the game by a friend of mine by the name of EvilFish. (different name on MC). It was way before beta, when it was in classic when we had to use WOM for servers.
Anyone remember the lava servers? How about TheOne's Zombie server? or WorldOfMinecraft server? Or WorkingSkydive Server?
Gold tools can remove blocks like stone and wood much more quickly than their diamond counterparts, with the same durability and restrictions as before 1.2.
I'm curious about how long other people have actually been playing for; i.e. hours spent playing, not just since they bought the game; I previously estimated that I've spent around 2,000 hours playing the game, which means the game has cost me only 1.35 cents per hour; about half of this time has been spent on one world, at more than 2,700 in-game days (which in turns leads to the question of who has played one world the most; 1.8 makes it easy to see the day on the debug screen; I used MCEdit which shows the day on its "world info" menu).
That is, if somebody bought the game 3 years ago but only played it for a few hours (unlikely) they would have spent much less time playing it than somebody who bought it a week ago and played several hours a day.
At least 4,000 hours, and that's not counting the thousand or so hours I've spent idle, whether it be at my mob grinder, my farm, or even just AFKing on a server.

I used to have such a negative feeling towards Minecraft, my brother would talk about it alot and I always said how "stupid" it was. In 2013 I used to watch Joey Graceffa videos and I started watching his MC vids and saw his MCSG and decided that I would give it a try.
This was when 1.6.2/4 came out and I instantly fell in love with it.
Now after a year, I love the game so much and think I practically have it mastered!

I bought the game after about episode 6 of this when he was putting em out. He made the game look so fun and I have played on and off pretty much since then, sometimes without touching it for months and then suddenly playing it for unhealthy lengths of time.

Great fun and so many changes since then!
I have 2500~ hours on the game. There have been many cases where I did nothing at all during an entire day other than play Minecraft .
EDIT:
