I have watched several tutorials. But my buckets wont pick up water and my hoe dies holes instead of cultivating. I have windows 8 Minecraft 1.8 vanilla. The latest java and tried if both survival and creative modes. i also stashed all me tools except the hoe to be sure I wasn't grabbing the wrong thing or to be sure there wasn't a cross referencing error.
Are you sure you didn't change the use button ? ( Defaults to right-click , used to place blocks , shear sheep , interact with entities - Ride , Trade , Tame etc - And use some tools and items on some blocks - buckets in liquids , seeds in dirt etc - )
And are you sure you are clicking dirt ? ( yeah , I know this is a stupid question ) and not stone , or wood or wool ?
Being a nerd is nothing to be ashamed of. Nerds rule the world! Who invented the internet? Nerds. Who created personal computers and smart phones? Nerds. Who made every video game you've ever played and ever will? Still nerds. Who sent probes to distant planets? Nerds, nerds and more nerds! I'm a nerd and I'm proud.
It sounds like you either changed the control settings to switch the left/right mouse click, or something is wrong with your mouse. Have you tried checking the control settings? Checking your mouse settings (Control Panel -> Mouse)? Plugging in a different mouse?
Other thing with water bucket issue, you might be trying to pick up a water stream. Is the water moving? or is the water still? You can only pick up water source blocks which is "still" water.
See other answers for your other issue.

"It's just like the story of the grasshopper and the octopus. All year long, the grasshopper kept burying acorns for the winter, while the octopus mooched off his girlfriend and watched TV. But then the winter came, and the grasshopper died, and the octopus ate all his acorns. And also he got a racecar. Is any of this getting through to you?"
