In an attempt to remain hopeful, and I'm all but. Lets look at it this way and hope.
Apparently this is the best selling, or near the best selling video game ever. People who have never played the game, or any games at all know of it. It is a house hold name across a lot of the world.
Let us hope that M$ remembers that, and how it came to pass, and that no one at M$ wants to be the one responsible for killing the biggest game the world has ever seen.
No one wants to be a household name for that.
So I hope that what ever they do to recap their investment will be as non irritating as possible. If all we have to due is endure some banner adds, and wait a little bit longer for updates to come out because they will come out first on what ever Microsoft platform they want to push sales on. I'll be fine.
It's not hate that is causing people to panic, but fear. I've had the same world for 4 years now, hundreds of buildings, thousands of hours, and if I'm told it's all over, or I have to keep paying to have the same game. I will have to quit. That is a major disappointment.
I've also relied on mods (bukkit in particular). Now that it has imploded ending my access to 1.8 material and on. I kinda see how perhaps having a large company like M$ backing the game might be a good thing. If they make the API come out and it is stable, good, and modders can use it. We don't have to worry about DCMA's and Evil rage quittings.
Their ya go, some positive spin.
So I for one welcome our new Monolithic Overlords. All hail the mighty M$ whooooo.
I saw that too. Got so worried. Everyone just picked up and moved! ._.
I noticed the massive goodbye/resignation thread that was made on the 6th. Maybe Bukkit team knew about this beforehand? I find that hard to believe though, this was a very high-profile acquisition... but who knows.
A couple of points on this thread's topic I noticed in the 2 MS press releases:
At Microsoft, we believe in the power of content to unite people. Minecraft adds diversity to our game portfolio and helps us reach new gamers across multiple platforms. Gaming is the top activity across devices and we see great potential to continue to grow the Minecraft community and nurture the franchise. That is why we plan to continue to make Minecraft available across platforms – including iOS, Android and PlayStation, in addition to Xbox and PC.
And
Microsoft plans to continue to make “Minecraft” available across all the platforms on which it is available today: PC, iOS, Android, Xbox and PlayStation.
So, at least for the next year, MC will not become a MS exclusive. Good to know.
The Minecraft community is passionate and diverse, ranging across all ages and demographics. We respect the brand and independent spirit that has made Minecraft great, and we’ll carry on the tradition of innovation to move the franchise forward. Our investments in cloud, Xbox Live and mobile technology will enable players to benefit from richer and faster worlds, more powerful development tools, and more opportunities to connect with the Minecraft community.
The Xbox PR starts off this point sounding pretty good then become very worrisome.
The Mojang team will join Microsoft Studios, which includes the studios behind global blockbuster franchises “Halo,” “Forza,” “Fable” and more. Microsoft’s investments in cloud and mobile technologies will enable “Minecraft” players to benefit from richer and faster worlds, more powerful development tools, and more opportunities to connect across the “Minecraft” community.
Which also gets mirror by the MS PR.
I hope this isn't refering to actual playing, because best case it could mean MC relams are moved to Azure cloud; lesser worse case, all multiplayer moved to Azure; worst worse case, all play moved to Azure cloud.
I've used MS's "powerful development tools", MSVS2013 is... lets just say I don't know anyone that actually switched to using it.
"[C]onnect across the Minecraft community", because MS is really well known for that? I do not like the feeling of what that implies. It could mean requiring a MS Live/Xbox (or whatever they call it this quarter) account to do anything MC related, and could go as far kicking Curse off MC.
Nothing in the PR to me seems to mention modding directly since all their talk about creativity is most likely about what players have made in vanilla.
Lastly, MS's RP closed with this, take it for what you will from what they said before it. I honestly do not know what to actually expect.
“‘Minecraft’ is one of the most popular franchises of all time,” said Phil Spencer, head of Xbox. “We are going to maintain ‘Minecraft’ and its community in all the ways people love today, with a commitment to nurture and grow it long into the future.”
He was, essentially, turned into a scape goat by being transformed into a figurehead. Everyone blamed him for problems when he had little to do with the game anymore, and I can fully understand how that would frustrate someone: being accused of things he may have not even known about nor fully understood. The vast majority put huge amounts of stress on him...it's understandable that not everyone can handle that amount of pressure and may cave, especially when it was unjust to do so.
With that said, I have two major concerns towards the future of the game.
1: Companies as large as Microsoft aren't typically keen on accepting community based ideas...it's extremely rare. The evolution of Minecraft, however, has been heavily influenced by its community...so are we to expect this to change? Mojang is now under the rule of Microsoft, they have to abide by rules and regulations that could limit their freedom and interaction with the community. This would be extremely detrimental to the game and community combined.
2: Companies as large as Microsoft rarely release free content in the form of updates, something Minecraft has always done. Are we to expect purchasable expansions, a subscription fee: perhaps the only individuals capable of receiving new content being those who are subscribed to Minecraft Realms? The latter seems to be a very likely possibility, and one that will have me flat out leaving the game...and I'm sure many others as well.
Those would be my two major concerns with the decision. With that said, Mojang now has access to an endless supply of resources that can be used to fuel the development of the game...there should be absolutely no limitations on what they can, and can not, do with the sheer volume of support this buyout grants...but what will it cost them, and us, in the long term?
Has the heart and soul of the game been sacrificed in the process?
Bukkit dead. Mojang and Curse kept secret that they owned portions (or all?) of Bukkit's code. They caused the downfall of the single greatest modding community in the history of gaming by arbitrarily enforcing their silly policies piece meal after years of taking a non0involvement stance. And how much of that 2.5 billion Notch just made do you want to bet it had EVERYTHING to do with structuring the plan to sell the code and branding to MS?
People can be mad all they want about this. But don't a one of you fan boys DARE deny Mojang created this mess.

Visual Studio is pretty good, but it's nothing to do with gaming. The only public gaming toolkit they have is XNA and Microsoft Studios surely have something better than that for internal use Even if it's an extended internal-only XNA toolkit though, the public have made some pretty nifty indie games in the past with it - Terraria and Bastion to name two (i played on PC, Terraria was on PC first too) that I personally enjoyed.

What that says to me is that your login will eventually go to some hub server controlled by Microsoft, regardless of version. That means they could quite easily stripped the code out for independent servers and only allow MS-certified (and paid for) ones.

Have you used 2013? 2010 was great and what I use, 2013 was Win8'd, I can't find anything.
I also forgot to mention the MS wasteland, ie. Codeplex.

Oh right haha I see your point, very fair enough. It'd be pretty lame if they forced a touchscreen-centric UI on their own staff, surely they couldn't be expected to work under those conditions (but if that's true, what did they force the Modern UI onto their professional customer base? eh... Windows 8 / Modern UI is just woeful).
And lol @ Codeplex. There was one app/project on there I found useful and with plenty potential, once upon a time. No idea what it was

Codeplex was a joke from the start. They had restricted to very few and limited OS licenses, none of them were any standard ones and if I remember right, the default and only choice at first was the MS proprietary OS licence.
It will be interesting if MS will try to get rid of Curse or CurseForge and if modding will even be allowed after deal closure.
If MS start screwing things up we can always fall back to 1.6.4 or 1.7.10. Even if MS pulls all previous versions and tears down the modding community (though licensing and takedown notices), all that will happen is they'll lose all control, modding will go underground and the pre-MS versions will be passed around on file sharing networks.
I sincerely hope the Microsoft DOESN'T try to control things too much, however that tends to be how corporations work (top-down, hierarchy-led decision-making). Either way the current releases will continue to be maintained and supported, at least by community developers, as long as people want them to.
I see how everyone is feeling about this and I just talked to my friend from our server. He posted a few thoughts on Microsofts acquisition of Minecraft. Please read if you would like. Re-share as well. Very well written article.
Yes I decided to write this little article since I like to share my thoughts, but feel free to read it and leave a comment. If you leave a spam/hateful comment it WILL be deleted.
But back onto this thread's topic, most everything that can be said about this has been said. I think Mojang is making a well thought out decision, and obviously if this wasn't a good idea then Mojang would not have gone through with it. And I don't think money is the main reason here. Obviously it's one of them, but since Minecraft is so huge nowadays, I'm sure Mojang could use some extra help.
I just really hope this "help" they will be getting from Microsoft is not going to destroy this great community Minecraft has.
I don't understand the hate. If it'll be all the same what's the problem then?
That's a big IF. We are talking about Microsoft here and they never leave things alone especially when their spending over 2 billions dollars to get their hands on it. You can expect a lot of the features you enjoy for free to start costing you now and who knows what other horrors await.
I saw that too. Got so worried. Everyone just picked up and moved! ._.

Well, cpw is gone and Bukkit is dead, but there is SOME good news at least. Searge isn't going anywhere.

I got a warning for whiskey-tango-foxtrot...
PSA: Thread is heavily moderated for anything close to profanity (I hope I don't get warned for this too T_T)
