Today is an incredibly exciting day for our team as Mojang and the Minecraft franchise join Microsoft. Minecraft is one of the most popular video games of all time, with more than 100 million downloads, on PC alone, from players since its launch in 2009. Minecraft inspires millions to create together, connects people across the globe, and is a community that is among the most active and passionate in the world.
Our relationship with Mojang began when we initially talked to the team about bringing Minecraft to the console. Minecraft quickly became the top online game on Xbox Live, with over two billion hours played on Xbox 360 in the last two years. That working relationship set the ground work for other opportunities. We’ve long seen the incredible potential of Minecraft.
At Microsoft, we believe in the power of content to unite people. Minecraft adds diversity to our game portfolio and helps us reach new gamers across multiple platforms. Gaming is the top activity across devices and we see great potential to continue to grow the Minecraft community and nurture the franchise. That is why we plan to continue to make Minecraft available across platforms – including iOS, Android and PlayStation, in addition to Xbox and PC.
The Minecraft community is passionate and diverse, ranging across all ages and demographics. We respect the brand and independent spirit that has made Minecraft great, and we’ll carry on the tradition of innovation to move the franchise forward. Our investments in cloud, Xbox Live and mobile technology will enable players to benefit from richer and faster worlds, more powerful development tools, and more opportunities to connect with the Minecraft community.
We’re excited to confirm that MINECON will continue next year. We’ll look to create even more ways for the vibrant community of YouTuber’s, innovators, bloggers and players to connect with each other – both in person and online. We will have much more to share in the coming months.
The Minecraft team’s unique vision, creative energy and innovative mindset make them a perfect fit alongside our other global studios. Microsoft Studios includes 343 Industries, Turn 10 Studios, and Lionhead Studios just to name a few. These industry-leading game studios within Microsoft that have had great success with beloved games and massively popular franchises like Halo, Forza, and Fable. We’re excited to welcome Mojang to the Microsoft family and we are thrilled to support the success and longevity of Minecraft for years to come.
Don't you realize that every time you walk out of the house, a Jumbo Jet could crash into your face? Seriously man, don't let the fear control you. And please don't accuse us of being ignorant and not realising the possible changes because we do, there's no need to get hysterical over it because there's literally nothing we can do about it anyway. Just try and stay calm and positive, instead of letting fear control us and becoming rage...
Just to clarify, Microsoft didn't make Fable or Halo - Lionhead Studios and Bungie did, Microsoft are publishers (they own Lionhead but don't own Bungie) but yeah they do have executive power/direction over Mojang now.
People are posting faster than I can reply, so I'm probably going to stop now. It's really sad to see all the pain so many people are feeling, when nothing has even happened yet. Uncertainty does terrible things to people
Thank you for calming people It's what we need. Being positive is the thing.

"Well, this is the earliest I have ever been late!"
Look at it this way... It could have been Google... Or Amazon. I personally was hoping Sony.
Google are too busy pioneering Artificial Intelligence, Brain-Computer Interfaces, Space Elevators, Smart Cars, and other things for the betterment of all humanity.
Amazon are insignificant, relatively speaking.
What you should've said is "it could have been Apple"
Thank you for calming people It's what we need. Being positive is the thing.
I can only trust in Jeb, I don't care if the rest of the world of Minecraft becomes too commercial, like TV shows, merchandise, or DLC. I just care about two things: The classic-ness of Minecraft, and the ability to create mods and YouTube channels.

REDMOND, Wash. — Sept. 15, 2014 — Microsoft Corp. today announced it has reached an agreement to acquire Mojang, the celebrated Stockholm-based game developer, and the company’s iconic “Minecraft” franchise.
The Mojang team will join Microsoft Studios, which includes the studios behind global blockbuster franchises “Halo,” “Forza,” “Fable” and more. Microsoft’s investments in cloud and mobile technologies will enable “Minecraft” players to benefit from richer and faster worlds, more powerful development tools, and more opportunities to connect across the “Minecraft” community.
Under the terms of the agreement, Microsoft will acquire Mojang for $2.5 billion. Microsoft expects the acquisition to be break-even in FY15 on a GAAP basis. Subject to customary closing conditions and any regulatory review, the acquisition is expected to close in late 2014.
Available across multiple platforms, “Minecraft” is one of the most popular video games in history, with more than 100 million downloads, on PC alone, by players since its launch in 2009. “Minecraft” is one of the top PC games of all time, the most popular online game on Xbox, and the top paid app for iOS and Android in the US. The “Minecraft” community is among the most active and passionate in the industry, with more than 2 billion hours played on Xbox 360 alone in the past two years. Minecraft fans are loyal, with nearly 90 percent of paid customers on the PC having signed in within the past 12 months.
“Gaming is a top activity spanning devices, from PCs and consoles to tablets and mobile, with billions of hours spent each year,” said Satya Nadella, CEO, Microsoft. “Minecraft is more than a great game franchise – it is an open world platform, driven by a vibrant community we care deeply about, and rich with new opportunities for that community and for Microsoft.”
“The ‘Minecraft’ players have taken the game and turned it into something that surpassed all of our expectations. The acquisition by Microsoft brings a new chapter to the incredible story of ‘Minecraft,’” said Carl Manneh, CEO, Mojang. “As the founders move on to start new projects, we believe the high level of creativity from the community will continue the game’s success far into the future.”
Microsoft plans to continue to make “Minecraft” available across all the platforms on which it is available today: PC, iOS, Android, Xbox and PlayStation.
“‘Minecraft’ is one of the most popular franchises of all time,” said Phil Spencer, head of Xbox. “We are going to maintain ‘Minecraft’ and its community in all the ways people love today, with a commitment to nurture and grow it long into the future.”
More details will be available upon the acquisition closing.
The fist 'big thing' microsoft is going to do is distribute a new client to the PC users, that completely cuts out any modding support, and then start charging you for DLC packs that add all the same features modders have spent the past 5 years creating.
You can also bet your bottom dollar support for custom textures / Skin packs is going to be completely cut off in favor of a DLC model just like the console version.
And the next thing they'll do is start flagging youtube videos featuring the music / sound effects they now own the rights to, causing the youtube community to completely give up on supporting the game.
I'm not sure how anybody can think this is going to go any other way. Minecraft, as we know it, is over.
Yo calm down... Lets see what happens. Just incase, hide in a bomb shelter, and download as many 1.7.10 mods as you can, and download many modding programs and tools... Learn and be minecraft... And then host a global server. Like "The Fallout"
Mods are the real question. They are too popular to do away with, but how microsoft will react is anyone's guess. They don't have a record of liking their stuff to be open source. Youtubers will be preserved, they are too big of a free advertising pull for microsoft to crush, and they are really why minecraft keeps being popular. Honestly, if anything they probably are helping microsoft not need ads on youtube. If anything they'll probably just want a percentage of profits made off minecraft which is fine by me, I just hope they are gentle about it. I mean, if I was a youtuber making 10,000 off minecraft videos a month, I'd be happy to pay 500 of that so I could keep doing it.

The gaming business took a giant fall in recent years because of bad business decisions like that.
That's your opinion, and somewhat unfounded. "The gaming business" was in decline long before microtransactions was even a known term in gaming; they came about as a means to battle mass piracy - the beginning of times where a 12 year old girl knows how to use The Pirate Bay and she was labelled as cool to do so.
Historically speaking, microtransactions - if you account for the initial market intolerance of the new practice - is likely one of the most significant factors in what *saved* the gaming industry. Microtransactions done *right*, e.g. for vanity items and not to isolate paying from free players. Don't make the mistake of lumping the whole concept of microtransactions together with the horrible "freemium" model, or anything like that.
They expect a break-even on 2.5 billion by FY 2015? That's ambitious, I mean I know minecraft is worth loads of money...mojang made like 200 million off it this year just from sales and doing nothing new, but that's fast for a break-even. If that's true microsoft may have gotten this company for a bargain price...Notch would have made way more than 2.5 billion in the long run, so I guess what he said about wanting to be out of the spotlight might be true. With all that money rolling in naturally he must have known he'd make more than 2.5b staying CEO.

I love all the "white knights" out there. Um, it isn't your effing job to "calm everyone down". I find that condescending, arrogant and ego-centric. This is a forum, people are ALLOWED to vent their fears, that is what a forum is partially for. No one made you MC Forum grief counselors, and most of us don't want them.

I HOPE the "future" of Mojang is a pink slip. Their code is buggy. They've yet to fix bugs that have been present since day one of the game. Their solutions to a lack of difficulty were to break the mechanics of existing mobs instead of to make MORE mobs. They refuse to acknowledge balance is a thing and that mobs should spawn relative to a player's capability. It's 2014 and biomes still don't matter. Hunger is obnoxious. It rains more than half the time the game's running, on top of night, on top of thunderstorms. When does any actual surface building get done unmolested? Java is a horrible language to write a game in. The modding community is this game's true savior and yet WHERE IS THE API!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
This is just the tip of the ice berg. I could go on for pages. Mojang is a horrible company full of lazy people who'd rather install a movie room in their studio instead of hiring more people. Some strict corporate control is just what those hipsters need.
Even if every registered minecrafter buys every dlc they'd need 50,000,000*($5) = 250mil or 10 dlc's to accomplish that. Seems unlikely. New users from cracking down on those who pirate seems like a more reasonable explanation.
