Whether MS is still a majority stock holder in Apple Inc.is a widely disputed topic, but it is believed MS owns a large piece of Apple through
Investments it has in a 3rd party investment company.
As arblox360 said Microsoft is not EA (and they have themselves stated that they aim to keep Minecraft the way it is currently) so it should be unlikely that DLCs etc. will take place.
We can't predict with any certainty what MS will do with Minecraft. We can use, however, the MS Flight Simulator experience as a guide of what they might do, however, based on history.
MS Flight Simulator was a similar product. It was released by MS and then supported by thousands of volunteer mods which greatly enhanced the game. MS made its money on sale of the game, and nothing else. It didn't create (many) obstacles to modders, and didn't stop them from even making a few bucks from selling them. MS knew that if a modder sold an airplane pack, or airport set, etc., the user had to buy MS Flight Simulator to use it, so they weren't losing money.
So there should be no reason to suspect MS will clamp down on Minecraft modders.
Having said that, the other side of the coin is grim. MS Flight Simulator was Microsoft's flagship PC game, and they let it drop when their focus switched to Xbox. Sales were declining, yes, but the program was already written and didn't have much overhead, and yet MS scrapped it anyway. They attempted to push an online "free" version which, of course, failed because it didn't generate any revenue.
MS still has not rebuilt its PC games division, and the last head of that division (from Steam) quit after six months, andhe hasn't been replaced. There is no evidence that MS has learned anything, and is still focused on Xbox at the expense of PC games.
Minecraft is, at its heart, a PC game. The risk is that Microsoft, with no real PC game division and no PC game executive on staff to provide any direction, will do the same thing they did with Flight Simulator: get confused, fail to support the PC version, and then scrap it as soon as sales dip in the slightest.
Worsening matters is that Flight Simulator didn't cost them $2.5B, so there was a lot less pressure on it to provide near-instantaneous profit.
So I suspect history tells us the modders will be fine. The game, however, ... that's at risk within the 5-10 year foreseeable future.
Since Microsoft is also VERY serious, I guess there will be no annual april fools joke like the MINECRAFT SECRET ALIEN UPDATE or the TESTIFICATE VIRUS OF 2014 (TV 2014).
I'm not wild about snapshots. They're nothing but alpha versions of the real updates, and Mojang is letting us find bugs instead of them (we're doing their job).
Don't knock it till you try it, thats the way I see it. It's bad that Notch is gone and it's not Microsoft but at the same token, Microsoft really did make good games, but hopefully they don't just focus on XBOX and PC, PS3 needs some really good updates other than just new music and new texture packs, We (PS3 Users) Were told that we would be receiving the Wither Boss, Witches, and Horses. I'm still waiting microsoft..
I stopped playing regularly a while ago (blame Valve), but honestly, this is kinda depressing. I remember reading Notch's blog and his updates when I was younger, it felt like he was directly addressing the community. There were always the joke updates, the April Fool's jokes, lots of things that really created a sense of community. The first loss of community I felt was when Classic died; I had a lot of friends from that. This is on an entirely new level.
Don't get me wrong. I'm a PC guy. I don't hate Microsoft, but it's disappointing that Mojang was bought out like that. I considered them above that.
Oh well. It's their decision; we can lament it all we want, but nothing is going to change.

Snapshots accomplish multiples things and have done them all well ever since the original beta 1.8 pre-release.
Show the community work is actually being done
Allow people to play or see the updates early, if they so choose to use them
And most importantly, finding bugs. You can argue we're doing they're job, but it would be nonsense to claim that 5 programmers are better than thousands of people when it comes to bug testing.
Well, the thing is, I don't think 2.5 billion $ is really that much money! Not for Mojang it isn't. Buying a huge world's bestseller should have been worth twice the amount of that! And also, Microsoft can really easily earn back 2.5 billion $ by charging us for Mods, Texture Packs, ETC...
And also, Microsoft can really easily earn back 2.5 billion $ by charging us for Mods, Texture Packs, ETC...
How much of that 'earned back' $2.5mil from 'mods, texturepacks, etc'
will be getting paid by MS to the community Modders, Artist, Ectera-ists that actually make the content?
Are you suggesting MS get paid millions by the community selling a mod I made
while I get nothing?
If folks can 'buy' a mod I make with just the 'cost' of seeing an add to d/l it,
isnt that better for the community than having to pay MS some number of dollars for it.
Thanks, I needed a good laugh... and so did all the Apple employees.
Man, this thread has gotten so much garbage in it we need a truck to haul it all away.
*Knock*Knock* Is anyone home?
Why didn't Google that before responding ??

1) Pay to play (Minecrosoft pay to play, only 20$ a month!!)
2) Ads (In the middle of you playing a horror map, suddenly a big popup ad for nikes scares you half do death.)
3) Pay for DLC(Hey, they just added the red dragon in minecraft, it's only 5$!)
4) Make minecraft unmoddable(Microsoft will think Hey, why not make payable dlc and make mc unmoddable)
5) Pay to change skins (Only 10$ for 3 skin changes!)
And last of all, i hope they still implement some of the stuff I was excited for like,
Mod API,
and Name changes

This one because Hatfilms are awesome!
Minefactory Reloaded avid fan:
Magical Crops. Magical.
The real expansion, the best expansion.
The best logical mod no one in Mojang thought about.
It's grown on me!
