"it's not about the money" Let me guess how much the Mojangstas get out of this deal: nill. Notch a hypocrite confirmed, again.
I'm not pessimist in the slightest, this might actually get interesting. And to all who cry for MC's death: there are far better and even open source alternatives, the only thing holding you back in Minecraft is it's popularity and nothing else. I would actually love to see all those guys who put so much effort in mods, forge and bukkit move to Minetest or similar open source project and actually make it into something Minecraft should have become a long time ago.
guys this is game over for minecraft, expect many people to quit minecraft including me, I will not longer update any of my mods and any I have In the making, so everyone Microsoft have a bad history of wrecking games and thats what they will do to minecraft, im pretty sure they will make you pay for everything and they will stop updating the game, mojang are sellouts, notch could have just let Jen carry on mojang, not sell it to stupid Microsoft this is it RIP minecraft, i bid you all a good day and RIP minecraft, hhgggg3279 signing off for good
You've decided to quit and stop modding before you even know what MS will do?
You're being more harmful than MS has been so far.

Interesting - yes it will definitely get interesting - but interesting doesn't necessarily exclude to still be sad, mad, reatrded, younameit. I play minecraft not because it is popular. I play it because I consider it fun and I consider it cheap to play. You (aused to) pay 20 bucks and get everything else FOR FREE. You were even allowed to earn some spare money with it as long as your art wasn't THEIR merchandise or something.
These carefree days MIGHT be over soon...
There are dozens if not more of minecraft clones that are better at what MC doesn than MC itself, even free open source ones that are just waiting for such a massive community to drive it forward, without all the eula takedowns and whatever. What keeps the community in Minecraft and not another game? The community, not the game, ergo popularity.
It doesn't matter what happens to minecraft, even if it goes under, the community is still here, and it might focus on a clone or something else entirely. This is a game that influence an entire generation and it will leave it's marks just like doom did, but it will not live forever.
^Agreed 100%. I am very pessimistic about what is going on right now. Looking at some of the past acquisitions that were made and how they were murdered...
So true. I'm mostly extremely pessimistic about the future, but this made it even worse.

I expect to see of either the following of what Microsoft could do:
Require .NET to be installed.
Require C++ programs to be installed.
Charge for Skins, Resource Packs, Mods etc
Charge to have ads removed (if there will be any)
Re-code everything into C++
Add a bunch of un-necessary additions to Minecraft (Connect it to your Windows! Weeeee!)
Integrate it as a Windows App
Put it up in the Windows Store for more money
Patent the idea of Minecraft like as if it was their idea all along because Microsoft isn't capable of making good games unless it had acquired other studios to make games for them.
Alienate the Community by throwing everything Microsoft at them which would make Minecraft irrelevant.
Put on Ads. Notably of things Microsoft has also acquired over the years. (You could make Skype calls while you play Minecraft!)
Bing is somehow integrated into Minecraft and if you search for something like "Redstone", Bing will tell you it doesn't know what you mean. (Because Bing is stupid.)
You know, this is why I like Steam. Because Valve are not assholes. If Valve had approached Mojang and bought Minecraft instead, I'd all be content. This acquisition of Microsoft buying Mojang is a good example. You can be stubborn about being bought out, until someone throws not millions but billions your way.
Also, I'm tired of the people on here like "we can have better graphics!" "we can have a Minecraft 2!". Idiots, that's NOT what Minecraft is about. It wasn't meant to be all about graphics, stupid graphic whores. Also what purpose would a Minecraft 2 have? Oh "Steve has a love story and must rescue his lover from the chambers where the Enderdragon is." or something brainless story concocted to make a sequel excusable.

If Valve bought MC I'd be praising Lord GabeN and asking for Steam Workshop support ASAP.
Saddly we do not live in that universe....other-Universe Me does though, and he is rubbing it in this-Universe Me's face
As far as "MineCraft 2" is concerned....to me MineCraft 2 would simply be moving MC out of Java and into a platform far more stable, while keeping the gameplay/graphics intact and having a built-in Mod API. Although it should SUPPORT the option for HD textures/shaders and whatnot (like SEUS, but integrated) by default as well.
Basically MC2 should just be an improved version of MC1 and nothing more....I think they should call it the MineCraft 2.0 update.....see what I did there....?
I hope notch can get some relief from this. It was the best $26 I've spent in a looooong time.
It would be nice if the newly minted billionaires could give some kind of cash to the other employees instead of just leaving. You know- split a million to a couple million dollars among the other employees. Some nice people who sell their companies for lots of cash do share a tiny slice of the wealth with their employees.
I've had experience with microsoft and other large corporations. They are going to monetize minecraft. It's not going to have the same "personality" a year from now but the changes probably won't start for 6 months. There is already minecraft merchandise out there so I think the monetization has to come another way. Microsoft has been very big on the "subscription" model for the last 8 years so the most likely change is some kind of subscription.
On the plus side, vanilla minecraft could get the development resources to move quickly for a while. I'm dubious of the modding/api/open side of the house tho unless there is a charge for it. It would be very interesting if minecraft went the way of mmorgs. Imagine a minecraft game with thousands of people at the same time.
I'm sorry about the hate Notch got. With long experience in other massive games- and even running small organizations in those guilds (100 people), I have to say in any group there will be haters. If you build anything of significant size- you will have haters. There are always a few people that will spit in your face if you try to give them a $20 bill. You can't ever make everyone happy.

Yep, even if you give people hundreds or thousands of hours of pleasure for less than $30 they still think you owe them something.
If 1.8 were the last mojang update, could be good in the sense that modding would stabilize. You would never be stuck waiting for mod updates, since the minecraft code base entry points were not changing all the time.

Honestly, I could see this going in either direction. The extra money and support may enable the Minecraft team to really pull out all the stops and make the best version of Minecraft possible. Microsoft bumbling around and interfering with the Minecraft team's vision and just being Microsoft might keep the game from ever reaching its true potential. It's far too early to tell either way - all there is to do is watch and hope.
I only know 2 things for sure: (1) I'll keep playing Minecraft as long as there are good updates and mods coming to it, and (2) I am so glad I'm not a moderator. Those guys are gonna have their jobs cut out for them, I think.

I would appreciate being off the "treadmill deathmarch" of constant upgrades. 1.7.10 is likely to be the last version with extensive mods, though, because cpw quit when this was announced and his code is vital to most mods.

If they keep most/all of Mojang's current employees then I have a little hope, but honestly... I'm terrified. I don't want one of my favorite games of all time to be tarnished by a megacompany.
I myself am quite pessimistic about this, like you guys. However, it hasn't been even a full day since MS acquired MC/Mojang. I don't see reasons for us freaking out so much.
It's for the best if Notch can't handle many of the complaining people about EULA. I hope updates come faster, and FREE.. No sense in charging now as if they did many people would just leave and not bother with Minecraft anymore if updates were to be charged. Heck Xbox updates for it are free... When updating it doesn't ask "Would you like to spend $$$ for the update?" . No it doesn't. Let's all hope it can be for the best.. If all goes South we can't do anything but to boycott Minecraft.
Cracked client here I came...
Nothing to see here~

Cause Microsoft seems likely to do something like that to "lore"/"Culture"(?) like that.
Further on... I'm more wondering on how the Community will respond to this, then on how Microsoft will be leading minecraft from now on.
Yea, I mean, it's not like they charge for skins, something you can normally get for free, right? Right?!?!
