In the end I can't blame Notch for selling out to 2.5 billion.
For that matter, I kind of feel bad for Notch if anything, for all the hate he's getting for this, and even before this... and considering his message I can see where he's coming from.
6 years of Minecraft; and for me almost 5 years of playing it, admittedly a good year or so of cracked Minecraft even at first. Notch had led the game out of alpha and beta stages into a full release, and even then continued to toss out more and more free content (well, Mojang did. and Notch owns Mojang)... and not to mention his support of the community, and just being a cool guy overall and not selling out as he has now, etc... I'd say Notch gave us all more than our money's worth.
I'm pessimistic about Minecraft's future with Microsoft though. All I can hope is that they don't mess it up, or change anything at all for that matter...
He owned the majority of shares. "Transferring" shares means selling them. What would you have done with your shares if you were him?
I think what he meant was Notch should have kept his shares & simply transpherred the titel of CEO to another person. Such things have been done. Still, I agree with you wholeheartedly. I'm human, I would have taken the money.

I'm kinda unhappy and some of you may be too because minecraft is going to get updated by other people and not jeb or anyone else that worked on minecraft.New people means new game.I would be ok if the original developers would work on it still and code it and make the updates ,but I don't think that's going to happen. It's going to be a new group of people that are going to build up minecraft to a new form.It wont be the same.Well it will be the same game ,but it wont be the same as it use to with the new developers and all. This is just my thoughts about Microsoft buying Mojang.Well guess we'll just have to deal with it.There's nothing we can do about it.we just will have to let it go and see what happens to the game.when 1.8 came out I though everything was going to stay the same and jeb and them would be working on 2.0 ,but I guess 1.9 and 2.0 will be up to Microsoft.I wish this didn't happen ,but everything is ok because updates will happen a lot quicker right? Well I don't care.I would rather have minecraft take 80 years for 1 update or something rather then having Microsoft update it the build minecraft up.I just don't like the idea of Microsoft having bought Mojang. Also they bought it for like $2.5 billion and minecraft is worth much more that. Notch and Jeb should have kept there company they could have got more than that if they just waited and few more years and stuff.Microsoft just wanted to buy Mojang because they wanted more money.Don't they have enough money already?Well this is what I think of Microsoft buying Mojang.
Can we not just be happy that Notch & all the other people at Mojang got the pay day they so richly deserved? Can't we than them for enriching our lives with their creativity? They gave us this game, it got huge & not everyone is cut out to be a CEO. People think it's easy to run a company this big, but it's brutally stressphul. With all Notch has done 4 us, doesn't he deserve some rest?
One way or another he was not going to run this company 4 ever so lets not act like we didn't know this would eventually happen. This was always going to happen. The only thing we didn't know is when.
All I hear is people asking "how will this impact my game?" & "What about my server?" & "What do I get out ov it?"; all me, me, me. No one seems to care about Notch's well being. Notch is a human being people! He is not a slave! We are all guilty of abusing this man. Every single one of us & I include myselph in this. He's not leaving, we drove him away. He's tired & wants to do other things with his liphe but we wont let him. We have thrust this god like mantle on him, called him our leader & made him out to be some kind of Indy gaming messiah. I know some of you think I am exaggerating but some people have actually in game! Even if it's only meant as a joke, that is still a lot ov responsibility 4 one man to bare!
We'd all break under that much pressure, so stop.
Stop worrying about how this is going to impact the game; Stop asking "is this is the end?"; & stop asking "what about me?" What about you? You spent 20 bucks & got to play an awesome game 4 a couple years. That's a good deal any way you cut it; quit complaining.
You might be right but still, for EA or Microsoft to get their hands on a game you know its not gonna end well.
Well you can always download your favorite legacy versions and save them in another director and if anything changes just use a front end to load them up. Even if they crack down on mods of old versions then you can always distribute them by torrent. I'm more worried about things like Minetest. Microsoft can get pretty ignorant about their copyrights.
I've been in around gaming for a long time. I've never seen a large company purchase a game like this and keep it going the way it was intended. Microsoft WILL do some stupid typical Microsoft things to the game and in the end it will probably kill Minecraft as we know it today, September 15 2014, but we'll have to wait and see.
I'm not holding out hope for updates anymore. I'm figuring it will be like flight simulator now with everything being DLC does anyone really think the new 1.8 stuff Mojang worked nearly a year one would be given way free from a company like Microsoft? Never has happened and never will happen not with any game and won't with minecraft anymore. Microsoft refuses to put games on playstation and rarely does for Wii. While they can't stop what's already been done do you really think 1.9 or Minecraft 2 (which will be coming) will be on any Sony product? You're kidding yourself if you do.
As for Notch (again)while I cant say I wouldn't take 2.5 billion either. I lost some respect. Bashing EA, Facebook, and even Microsoft (along with many others including indi companies making deals with larger companies) in the past and then selling to one of them screams hypocrite. As I said though I doubt I would walk away from 2.5 billion. Notch and the other two leaving both know Minecraft won't be the same and they are getting out now, IMO, to get away from the inevitable fallout that WILL happen.
The ONLY thing that would change my opinion of this deal and Notch is if they negotiated some clauses in the contract to protect the future of the game. Not that Microsoft couldn't easily get around them. It would be nice to see some sort of update in game for current players of the game as a sort of goodbye or something to acknowledge the people that made the game worth 2.5 billion. Considering the only people getting screwed by this are current Minecraft users.
Just puttin this out there, if they try to force GFWL somehow into Minecraft or logins or any authentications I will personally see to it to make their life a living hell. I'm fine with this otherwise, just as long as Microsoft keeps their greedy DLC shoveling bullcrap methods and GFWL away from this game.
The dream story is now really a nightmare. Minecraft is dead. Cro$oft eats our children.
Shame. This will become the worst story in video game history.
"But don't be mistaking this is NOT about money".... Nothing more to say. Anyway, I don't have words to express what I'm feeling. Just want to forget it. Hope to wake up one day and have forgot all about Minecraft memories. Hope my nephews and childrens will do the same.. What a treature.
Notch.. There are no excuses... will you sell your own child to evil just because you didn't want to see him grow?!
ill live in old versions they can mess with new versions just leave old version alone
break the servers and mods in the next update just leave current versions alone

He had already done that, years ago. Carl Manneh was CEO. But as long as Notch had controlling ownership, he was the *real* boss, and so he was the target of invective/death threats/begging/what have you. There was no way out except to sell his shares.

Geographicraft (formerly Climate Control) - Control climate, ocean, and land sizes; stop chunk walls; put modded biomes into Default worlds, and more!
RTG plus - All the beautiful terrain of RTG, plus varied and beautiful trees and forests.
I'm super sad that this happened. So many things that made the game unique are going to go. I think i'll just go play some game like Minecraft, like Terraria or somthing. I'll take any Minecraft-ish game that has the same traits that Minecraft is about to lose.

Most of those death threats probably came from idiotic kids that needs spankings anyways.

Okay, no. Notch was a good guy. He couldn't handle the pressure. He deserves to do what he loves. There is not one person here who doesn't understand that, unless they have the emotional range of a teaspoon.
But that doesn't mean that we are not allowed to be upset. The community is the largest part of Minecraft's development and identity, and it (surprise) is comprised of individuals. I, personally, am just waiting for Microsoft to do whatever it's going to do, but others feel the need to ask questions and be negative. And not only are they completely within their rights to do so, they actually have valid reasons for doing so. Notch wasn't a slave. He wasn't even working on Minecraft. Despite that, he went against many of his outspoken principles to (in effect) get rid of us, and it kind of feels like a punishment. That feels bad, and on top of that, Microsoft's in charge now, and we have absolutely no idea what's about to happen.
This is more than just an annoyance for some people. It's a fundamental change to something they love, a complete reversal in someone they trusted, and the worst part is simply that they don't know anything. So they ask, "What's going to happen? How am I affected?"
And that's just fine. Harmless data flows through the internet, never to obtain any sort of usefulness. Some people feel satisfied for doing it, despite the lack of worth.

I don't know what to do anymore.
Everything is falling.Server's where going down and stuff
And now Microsoft bought Mojang. Is this the Minecraft great depression?
