Okay, they're a great light source, rather easily crafted, and versatile to place. As a light source they keep away hostile mobs. Has any one noticed they tend to keep away hostile mobs beyond what you would expect from their effect as a light source? Here's my story.
Deep in a Dark Oak forest, I built a blockhouse surrounded by a fence at ten block's distance. I placed torches at the fence corners and on the blockhouse to prevent monsters from spawning inside my fence perimeter. I cleared the forest back from the fence just enough to keep monsters from falling off treetops and landing inside the fence perimeter (Survival Mode, Normal difficulty). Nighttime became a slaughter fest of Creepers, Zombies, Skeletons & Endermen, and sometimes me! Then I replaced the corner fencepost torches with Jack o'Lanterns. No more monsters came around after that. Before the Jack o'Lanterns, my deep forest fort was better than a spawner site. Afterwards, boredom.
I can find no mention of this monster repellent effect on Minecraft Wiki. I still have more testing to do, but was wondering if anyone else has noticed the effect? Do Jack o'Lanterns scare away monsters??
They don't, Odds is that's it's just a coincidence, thought Jack'o'Lantern are brighter (block light of 15 instead of 14 from the torches), so that little difference might have been enough to let more dark spots around for mob to spawn. Also don't worry too much about the tree's top, monsters can't spawn on leaves so nothing should be there.

no, they do not. light level only influences the spawning of mobs, not where they will go. that is, unless it is in direct sunlight. then they catch fire. but here is what i am proposing: a jack o'lantern will chase away the undead like cats do to creepers. wouldnt that give them more of a use?

Ditto
I am a friend of all Snow Golem kind.
Maybe they should have such an effect, like old Irish lore about jack o'lanterns? like, they make the undead run away like cats do to creepers?
I think mobs will try to avoid light if possible, though that be not be true.
