This picture sums it up nicely. Ever since 1.0 (with the exception of 1.5) the updates have had very little/no functional additions, but easy-to-add aesthetics and the like. The updates are few and far between, and the amount of work in them is equivalent to 1/100th of the time it took them to bring out the update. And for those of you planing to say "You don't know how hard it is to do this!" I do. I have experience with programming and some texture making, and even so most people would be able to agree with something of the magnitude in the above picture shouldn't take half a year.

Can't you read? I said I only play PC Minecraft

You know, Mojang didn't spend the entire update on carpets. They completely overhauled the world generation, added a whole bunch of plants, improved fishing, added stained glass, added several Command Block commands, and fixed quite a few bugs.

I didn't miss the point. I was simply stating the other things that Mojang worked on that the most recent update did not contain, as you put it, "very little/no functional additions."
People had be pining for a new world generation system for a while, and completely changing the entire system must have taken quite a while. Just because you think they barely put any effort into the update doesn't mean the update was actually completely terrible, and void of useful additions.

You did miss the point. The point is blatantly the updates have had very little useful additions. I am well aware of the other near-useless things they have added in in that update. And personally, a new world generation where chocolate cake layered mountains are present isn't a good thing.
My enjoyment with the game grows with each day. The updates are slow to come, and many things seem half finished, but for a sub $30 game that's receiving them at all, I'll live with it.
They've done much more than that! In 1.8 there are tons of new commands, slime blocks, bunnies, new world generation, new Ocean Temple and a lot more!
New commands? Glad to know my survival experience is enriched! And slime blocks? Oh boy were trampolines necessary! Bunnies? You mean we will have yet another useless passive mob? GREAT! Oh boy ocean temples! I can't wait to explore a bland room while drowning and being assaulted by squares!
I complain about not getting the things I personally want--like better passive and neutral mobs, because that's the kind of thing I personally want--but I'm not so full of myself to assume that if they aren't adding what I want the whole game franchise is "in decline".
And "Use mods" is a crap excuse. What if the mods conflict? What if we want to play on our favourite servers? What if the mod only have high-res textures that don't fit with the 16-bit textures of minecraft?

I wasn't suggesting they add in "what I want", just that their work quality has dropped drastically and as such the game is declining in quality.

What if they conflict? Well use Google and the forums here for help in resolving the conflicts duh. I don't see how modded minecraft will affect your favorite servers, seeing as how you can have multiple instances of minecraft in the launcher, not to mention there are various other launchers out there to use for modded minecraft while leaving the vanilla launcher alone.

Way to miss the point. I can't play on my 'favourite servers' with the modded version unless they have it as well. Therefore we are back to the problem of vanilla minecraft.
Mojang is pulling strings to remove server competition did you see what they did with MCPC+? they made it so you cant use a stable console anymore this means im staying in 1.6.4 minecraft after that is dead to me

Thank you for completely missing the point.

I honestly think they ruined Minecraft over the last few updates... I miss 1.0

We want new features. The Good stuff. Not Map-making tools and mod-support.
Honestly, it's as simple as that!
Formerly known as ORabbit around these parts.
Because there is a mod for every possible thing to add, great plan!
