Now that servers are allowed to do p2p or "play-to-play" my question is would you pay to get on a server? (lets say a server you liked and you had to pay 10$)
It would depend, if it were something big and new (say DayZ when it was in it's early stages) then probably. I wouldn't just pay to go on any old server. It would have to have a reason to be p2p, something worth it.
Provided there is a timed trial and what not, and if the server is interesting, then possibly. But I think the Pay2Play system will die out and will be ultimately unpopular. If any server even tries to have any sort of subscription to it, that will fail, the only servers with a chance at that would be the more popular ones.
I can just imagine someone opening a pay to play server and then closing down a day after getting a bunch of people to join.
That's the thing with P2P servers, people are not going to join unless its popular or unless they know someone already on it. Allowing or even providing the P2P ideal will only benefit the larger servers. So here's your chance everyone, if you're looking to start a new popular server, watch for one of the popular servers that turn to P2P, and make your server F2P with donor packages!
Lol in all seriousness, I see P2P failing miserable, I don't think anyone will even try to go through that route.
Making servers pay-to-play is like changing a F2P MMO to a P2P MMO. And to the best of my knowledge, that doesn't happen.
The way mutilpayer servers are running right now is similar to F2P MMOs. A lot of things are free, including the ability to play on the server, but if you want additional pizazz and benefits, you need to pay for it.
Also, this new format will hurt small servers.Paying to go on a small server that hasn't developed a lot yet will only dissuade people from going on small servers.
I have no job and I'm not made of money, so if there's a time trial for the server, if reviews overall are looking good, and if it's a one-time fee, then I might. If it's a monthly subscription, though, then I'll never pay.
What if you pay to get on a server, and then later decide that you don't like it?
That's a risk you take with any subscription based game. If you don't like the game, then of well, you already bought it and most all places have a no return/refund policy for open box software, or like steam, no refunds, practically at all.
Or, if a P2P game shuts down, same thing kinda applies. Tabula Rasa (Great game, too bad I didn't play it till the F2P shutdown event) or Lego Universe (Fun concept, but marketed poorly. So many Lego set ideas lost...) You are kinda SOL with your subscription fees being wasted, effectively.
It would be so easy to scam people with P2P servers.
Not "so easy". People are less likely to pay to join a server if they are not established and show signs of sticking around for a while. You make it sound like people will just throw money around left and right to join servers, which isn't the case.

If P2P in this case means Pay to Pwn, then yes, F2P games do it all the time XD
Yes these changes will hurt servers of all sizes, but it will help quell the crappy, for-profit server, and help shape up a community with quality servers. If you have a quality service to offer, people will pay for it. There is a reason why most of the "As Seen on TV" products are only around for like a month before they disappear forever. If it were a quality product, it would still be around.
As for the topic. No I would never pay to play on a server. When I do play multiplayer, I prefer to play with friends. I don't like most other servers because they are either filled with tons of spam messages and epoeple chatting away about who knows what, and the ever pressing fear of griefers/people stealing my stuff. And with things like building plots where only I can do things on, I feel limited. When I play with friends, we don't need to worry about others stealing crap and we respect eachothers space and items so we don't have to book it 10,000 blocks away right when we spawn just to get away from people to build.

Already have. This youtuber by the name of potato0rgy. Either you can fill out an app to join, or donate a certain amount to join. i never got picked from apps so i payed. I don't mind this method. Makes for a better server community imo.

I didn't know these forums even worked still.
There is such a thing as a timed trial, which is acceptable according to the EULA.
