So on this computer I have windows XP and it has 1.99 Gigs of RAM. But it does something weird when *trying* to launch. It shows the border around the window like it usually does, but the inside is blank. Does anybody know any fixes for this? Also, if it helps, the graphics card thing has I think 540 somethings. (I don't know what they're called :P)
Do you have the latest build of Java 7 installed? Is your computer 32-bit or 64-bit? It's possible that Windows XP isn't even supported anymore since it's so ridiculously outdated.

It does look like a Java version issue. As posted before me.
Windows XP is certainly NOT the problem, I have Minecraft running on XP on my old netbook. You just need to make sure that your drivers are okay (test with another program that uses openGL) and as mentioned, the latest java for your platform (32/64 bits) currently version 7 update 60.
Make sure you don't have any previous java versions floating around, which still seems to happen.
While XP is a "you're on your own" OS, there is no need to upgrade IF you have the proper security measures in place (and don't visit any dodgy sites and download illegal crud software).
I suspect that sticking with XP is mostly because of hardware/OS balance and speed?
If you consider upgrading, use 7 and skip Vista for its known issues. Check on the manufacturer's (eMachines?) website if there are compatible drivers for your system or you might be stuck.
Update Java. If it doesn't works, I hihly recommend you to update to Windows Vista (probably won't support Win 7) because Microsoft no longer supports WinXP problems, and that is considered a WinXP problem.
The computer is more likely to support Windows 7 than Vista. Windows 7 is much less resource intensive than Vista.Your graphics card could just be too old to support Minecraft. Usually these kinds of glitches happen when the graphics card is just outdated.

*Edit* I said that too soon. Same problem, just now with java installed
I think you're right D:
