I truly have a hard time understanding where people have an issue with a server selling "anything"? It's not like there are not a ton of alternatives. Obviously these servers that are pay2win are popular for a reason and the most vocal opponents are the ones who feel slighted by a player they perceive as having bested them only because they have "paid for an advantage."
Let the server owners make money. If enough people leave or do not join the server, the servers will close or lower their prices.
...again, I cannot understand why you cannot just open Minecraft, select the server you dislike for charging money, hit delete, and stop complaining.
Minecraft will never be completely pay2win but it will always be a part of the game. Also, if it was that cheap to just open and run a server paid through donations then every other person out there would have a server they always wanted.
I am guessing you subscribe to lassiez-faire economics?
The reason I am anti-cashshop is not the advantages one gets by microtransactions, but the illegality and the conflict of Mojang's vision for this game.
The illegality is obvious. Servers are making money selling things that do not belong to them. If you consider this moral in anyway, then give me your address so I can start putting your stuff on eBay.
The conflict of Mojang's vision requires slightly more explanation. Mojang has a vision for Minecraft. They want a level playing field for their players. If Pay2Win goes against Mojang's vision and Mojang has the legal means to shut it down, then by all means they have the moral justification as well. It is their game and vision, they can do what they want with it.
Just my 2 cents saying its bull pie to take capes away because the dev team can't come up with something more original to give their favored friends and family. Looks at how popular the capes mod was, now because of greed I can't have a cape (My last name is Oakheart, like Ser Arrys Oakheart from A song of fire and ice series) and I would run around with the Oakheart Coat of Arms. What are my(or any of us normal folks) chances of ever running into a minecraft dev and then impress them enough to get a dang cape? I can't help but feel they want to nerf servers from giving out perks to perferd players but are more than willing to take away capes from average players and have them only given to the dev teams' family and close friends. Thats my opinion and I'm just voiceing it because I want the devs to know how I feel and I hope I'm not alone.

all you need to do to get a cape, is go to minecon! anyone who attends minecon gets a cape!

I think the problem with the cape mod was all the knock off Minecon capes, but that is my two cents.
I don't want to spend all the money to fly and stay in eruope for a minecon cape that I have no interest in. I want a house Oakheart cape.
honestly, i feel your pain since my parents don't have the money to take me to minecon. but if i had the money, i would definitely get an official cape, and the good thing about official capes is you don't need to rely on a modder to keep the cape when you update to a new version, you keep it forever as long as you have access to your account.
@1 I didn't actually mean that. I meant that I don't think they will shut down all, but crippling a few might do half the work.
@3 ? Even if you bought a $50 rank and $50 worth of coins, you wouldn't be able to upgrade to the $100 rank with this system. Are we thinking of the same thing?
@5 The way I see it, there's three possible motives for mojang
1) They actually want to kill off most of multiplayer to get more money from realms (extremely unlikely, but possible)
2) They don't actually want to cripple all kit-based servers, just the bad ones (which will take a while for us to realize, and they haven't made very good choices on which to prioritize so far... $10k cinema rank still exists)
3) They actually think this is a good idea, and it's going to result in half (half seems reasonable) of the servers being pay2play after a trial period...which would suck, especially for factions servers.
All of these are going to scare people for a while.

1. The only servers that will be really effected are those too big for their own good; IE Mineplex. The small $20 or less/month servers will survive and actually thrive.
3. So you are saying that if I bought a $50 rank, I can never upgrade to the $100 rank? That is not true for any server.
5. Lets hear them:
A. Wrong. This EULA will not even put a dent in the number of servers out there.
B. By bad ones you mean servers that sell OP kits, then yes. Mojang wants to give us all an equal playing field in their game.
C. Wrooooong again. Pay2Play will not be the new future. It will be in the future, I can see the super giants turning into Pay2Play, but not half (and where is your citation? Or are we just making up statistics and calling it "reasonable"?) the most likely future of Minecraft Multiplayer are medium (40 player) servers that can be paid out of pocket by the owner ($20 or less per month).
i don't get why some people on this thread think that the new EULA is mojangs way of shutting down competition for realms. realms is not supposed to replace big servers, realms is mainly for kids who want to set up a small server with little to no trouble...

It is a scapegoat. Pro-CashShops want to cast Mojang in a greedy light and cast themselves as the victims (which is ironically, the opposite of the truth).
Then blame the people who kept uploading Minecon capes.

A. Okay, glad to see someone thinks that
B. Yeah, I know. But blocking off access to a certain game mode is illegal? Is notch anti-DLC/expansion pack? That's kinda weird...
C. See A.
Also, please explain to me these:
1) If you ran a faction server, how would you plan on making money?
2) Don't you think that minigame servers like mineplex will thrive in comparison, since there is a lobby and therefore good time to show off your particle effects? (Honestly, I thought about donating to mineplex the other day, but I don't want to do per-month)
3) What gives mineplex the idea that they can only "rent" ranks (as in, pay-per-month), instead of sell them permanently?
Then blame the people who kept uploading Minecon capes.
Or I can blame the 16bit artist that got his feelings hurt when people (OMG NEW CONCEPT!!!) pirated or replicaed his crappy minecon cape.
Punish the 200,000 players for a few bad apples. Makes since. Lets take my guns away to because some dope half the country away shot up some theater aswell.

So what do you suggest then? What is your compromise to punish the bad apples while keeping the good? For Mojang to go through each cape uploaded (over a million) and check to see which ones are knock offs?

._. theres still a cape mod, i hope it gets taken down for violating the EULA
Anyhow, me and my bro thought up some ways people could make money in a sort-of pay-for-gameplay-features fashion, but they're all either very "light" or more annoying than advertisements. Please tell me:
a) Whether you think they would be a viable way to support the server
Whether you think the eula technically allows them
c) Whether you think they're mean
d) Whether you think notch would be ok with it
1) The "vote-to-play" method. After the first day, you have to vote to log on, unless you donate. Not really pay2play!
2) The "booster" method. Based off of mineplex's gem boosters (which have been changed to be compliant with the eula), this gives the donors the ability to type "/gift" once for each day you've been a donor. /gift gives everyone online money, or if you prefer, a "premium currency" of sort. The donors could choose whether to /gift when tons of people are on, or they could make a "gift guild" who all type /gift while each of them were on. As long as you had the premium currency prices pretty high, this might just work. The best part is that the less donors there are, the more this encourages them to donate (as they are getting less premium currency from others' "/gifts"), so your server wouldn't be able to become a large p2w server, but it would be able to survive.
3) This next one is hilariously pay to win and incredibly annoying to free players. I call it "Perk Time!" Basically, at a certain time, say 6:50-7:00PM fridays UTC, everyone except donors is kicked from the server. During this time, the server owner can legally give any rewards they so choose to the donors, because they are the only ones on the server. This is really the most pathetic loophole I've ever seen. The only financial problem with it is the fact that you are kicking all free players, but you still have to pick a time that most donors will be able to join at.
I am guessing you subscribe to lassiez-faire economics?

Don't get me wrong, I like capes. I see Mojang's reaction was overkill, but overkill is the only way to kill something online sadly. R.I.P Cape mod.
will reporting it to mojang do anything?
Depends if they [mojang] want to take legal action or not.
