This is not always true. I am a big server owner and I had to take my server down; we used to have over 300 players a day before the EULA came out and people loved it. We simply just don't make enough money to keep it up or compete with the huge servers that are already established like hypixel to even make asthetic donations a viable option. you ahve to understand how much time it takes and how many resources are required to make a good server. when servers say they make "profit" that doesn't mean just extra money they can do anything with. if a server doesn't make profit then they can never make big changes upgrades, and buy new services they may need like better DDOS protection or more slots. you NEED profit to survive as any company. Not just as a Minecraft server.
To put it into perspective we started obeying the EULA and only did asthetic donations. we are now 2500$ in debt and the server closed down. before that however we were earning enough money to keep the server alive and to help it grow; making it a better experience for everyone.
Minecraft servers like hypixel and Shotbow network are a business. Im sorry if that bothers you, but that's just the reality of how they work and because of this they NEED profit in order to survive. I'm telling you this with 100% honesty. I wasnt in this server development to rip kids off for free money. i was in this because I wanted people to enjoy the server i pored my heart and 2 years of my life into. I wanted to see people having fun with something i created. Now, nobody will ever be able to experience it again.
I agree that the select few servers out there who didnt put effort into their servers and practically stole from kids with cheap and unfair donations is a disgrace and needed to stop. but what about people liek me who spent 2 years developing my server with custom plugins and everything and trying to make my donation options as fair and fun for everyone? we did not deserve this kind of punishment and the fact that so many people like yourself is hating on people like me SIMPLY for the reason that I was a server owner is both sad and really hurts my feelings especially since every day I came home from college, I would work my butt off on the server to make it the best possible experience and you guys loved it. But when the EULA came out you guys condemned me and many other innocent and honest server owners who like me just wanted to make something beautiful and fun for people to play. it's very upsetting and really pretty sad that people cannot be sonder enough to put themselves in the shoes of good, honest server owners.
I agree, im not a server owner so i cant say really how much money and time it takes to make a server but I have seen it on servers with good server owners. they really do work their butt's off.
Besides i'm smart enough not to play on the bad servers with insanely unfair donation options. But if the donation option is simply a temporary boost or a new level like a rank or something I honestly don't care. As long as it's not literally game breaking I believe server owners should be able to offer them.
I was Just never really bothered by server owners making money off their servers; if they worked as hard as they did to make a good server i love, they deserve some profit as a reward for it imo.
These people are insane how do they feel millions of children adults and teens will feel about all there favourite servers and all there donations going down the drain Mojang needs to sort themselves out and quick or some players aren't gonna stand for it and they will lose popularity!

Those *very lovely people who are angels on this earth and can do no wrong, especially since their followers monitor this thread* at microsoft that tell mojang what to do are paid very well for a reason!
People are complaining now, in fact we've been complaining since 2014, but only recently stepped it up since microsoft's actually using their resources to force the eula down everyone's throat, including the "newer" stuff in the past few months!
BUT while people are complaining, they're still playing, and when their favorite server goes down, they complain, but try to find another server that's still operational (sometimes as a group, sometimes solo).
Their ultimate goal IS to *gently persuade (with their angelic ways of goodness, kindness, and non tolerance for dissension)* every server out there for the sake of promoting their realms and creating a monopoly, but it is in their best interest to do it slowly! If they chose to implement all of their *holier than thou, altruictic* money/power grabbing changes all at once, most of servers would be gone within a week or 2, and the rest would soon follow. THIS would have the effect of more players getting *overjoyed with their benevolent overlord masters* to the point of finding other games to play, and saying a great big collective "*(insert whatever blessing here)* YOU" to mojang AND microsoft would suffer as well, as people would choose a game that microsoft don't have their *non greedy* hands on already!
And to all you *followers of these righteous beings that can do no wrong* out there saying how mojang's not the bad guy for wanting to curb servers making money, consider this: FREEDOM OF CHOICE! *(should I remove that so I don't get reported? Mods kindly edit it out if you want, since I truly don't know if that's allowed to be typed here anymore)* If a player does not like that they have to pay to win on a server, they have the freedom to LEAVE said server and find another one...maybe even one of YOUR servers where they can play as free as they want with you footing the bill!
I just can't understand some of your opinions on this...it's like you vote for capitalism, and you don't vote for capitalism in the same breath.
*note to mods: shoud you choose to delete THIS for profanity, kindly 1)edit it to meet your wishes, without altering the message I'm trying to convey, and 2) message me how exactly I have broken your rules so I may have it documented for when I contact a higher staff member*
Minecraft servers that are popular like Hypixel and stuff aren't making enough money to supply the costs for the server! So how are we gonna be able to play on big servers that we all enjoy, because soon enough nobody will be able to keep their servers running, and then most people will just quit because multiplayer servers are what sums up minecraft! So most people that own HUGE servers are now gonna drop and fall straight to the bottom as they aren't making enough money/profit to keep the server going!
Just a random thought: Since microsoft/mojang are slowly killing servers for the sake of not annoying the player base (too) much, in their transition to a Realms monopoly, What would happen if ALL SERVERS coordinated a shutdown for at least 3 days (preferrably 5 or 7 days)? When someone tries to connect, they get a message from the server saying something like "Cannot connect! Don't like it huh...This is what will happen when Microsoft approved Mojang EULA continues to restrict our ability to generate funds to keep the server running. Support private servers by boycotting Mojang and Microsoft's unfair practices"
Literally force the issue, and see what happens when the players all understand what's going on, and (hopefully) chooses to get involved.
Again, just a random thought. I am in no way trying to incite anything illegal! Please don't pick on me again mods!

how is mojang enforcing their EULA unfair? if it wasn't for mojang, these servers wouldn't exist, and a lot of server owners wouldn't be getting rich off of mojang's intellectual property that they can most likely sue people over

You make it sound like Mojang is not making enough to spread the wealth, so to speak. I can remind you how much microsoft bought them for, if you want (sorry if that sound confrontational, I did not mean it as such). I think you are also forgetting that without the servers, mojang's little block program would not have gained the popularity it gained! it's the servers that, in a way, provided free advertising on mojang's behalf, as far as showing how versatile minecraft is, and the fun that can be had in different themed environments. So yes, if the servers get popular for having a theme players enjoy, mojang's getting free publicity, and more people are buying accounts, then the servers should be allowed to make money off of minecraft! How much depends on the popularity of their servers, but at least enough to keep their servers running!
But okay, the argument that the eula from 2014 was not being enforced, yet now it is, is a valid one. Servers had to change and adapt (and in the process lose income). NOW in the past few months they add on stuff that (and I can safely say this because the server owner I play on and moderate said as much) in previous recent emails from mojang said they would allow certain things, but now say they are not allowing and threatening with blacklisting.
There is a reason their realms are....not as popular as they would like it to be, and for their ineptitude and lack of making "enough" (considering the greed in play here I can't imagine what they consider to be "enough) money from it, they are punishing the servers slowly and steadily.
It may be their intellectual property, but they owe a LOT to the server owners and playerbase for the money lining their pockets already. They can, and should leave the servers alone now.
And just to play devil's advocate, if you believe mojang has every right to slowly kill servers with the ultimate goal to have be greedy with their realms (which are so inferior to most servers it should not need to be mentioned, but I'll mention it ;-p), then all the more reason to kill all servers, disrupting mojang's/microsoft's ultimate plans, and waking up all players to just how bad the reality of the current situation is.
If the players choose to be apathetic, then the servers will die and they will have nothing except realms. If they choose to help their servers continue to be around for years to come, then great: The servers get to live, and mojang gets to make more money from free advertisement (in the form of the servers, and players word-of-mouth to their friends), and players buying accounts.
Maybe I ranted too much and went off on tangents, but I hope i answered your point.

They made Minecraft a sandbox game without the sand.
Don't make this up to be a false world where everyone is treated equally. It's a double edged sword which they're swinging at this point, it's going to hit them eventually. It's not exactly a "Fair", key-word it's evident that's what they're perceiving, but the fact they even encouraged "timed access" or "subscription" defeats the purpose. You're stilling having to PAY for plain ACCESS to a server? That's not fair, so when your subscription runs out and the kids can't use moms credit card anymore they lose ALL their items, that's even more slimy than paying for the shortcut to their items. Okay?
That's not the server owner's fault. They need money to keep the server running, especially since servers can no longer be Pay2Win. You should look up dedicated minecraft servers on google. They are not cheap. Essentially you have one, two, or maybe five people paying for a server that costs $500+ every month, and this is not to mention they have other bills to pay. Plus maintaining a minecraft server is only a hobby for them, not a second job. Imagine paying $3-400 a month by yourself for a server and having to rely almost completely on the money you get from the players. The only way to do that is set up a subscription fee or entrance fee, and supply aesthetic upgrades for a price. It's totally fair for them to do all this, otherwise there would be no server.

If you want to run a server, you cannot monitize the content, roughly speaking.
You can if everyone gets access to the content.
Perhaps a better question: Why do you want to run a server? Are these your friends, and will they help cover the costs? Are they strangers, and you're trying to make money off them using Mojang's product to make money?

I have a question.
Is a server allowed to sell pokemon player heads? They are cosmetic? If not, are we able to add them to votecrates so that everyone gets them free of charge? I think it would be really fun/cute.
I was hoping to incorporate Pokemon Player heads as well as some others like Super mario/DBZ/Etc.
Just curious, if this is outlined anywhere in the EULA, I read over it a few times, But I want to be 100% sure because I want the server 100% EULA compliant. Player heads are cosmetic? So, I figured they would be okay, but I also have concerns as I don't want it to be labeled as "promoting another game". If that were the case though, some server who are Pokemon servers, those would be shutdown no??
What kind of servers are you hosting that are $500 a month? If you're renting a server and it costs that much, maybe you should consider buying your own server. If you're renting a server, its only $10/GB of RAM from beastnode, and they suggest around 20 players per GB on a vanilla server. If you are talking about owning your own, then you really only have a one time investment on components and the rest is just electricity and Internet cost. You're looking at around $200/mo if you have a fairly high end rig and a gigabit connection, provided you are fortunate enough to have that speed available in your area. If you manage to get a server popular enough to justify having your own box with a gigabit connection, then you're probably getting more than enough in donations from players, even with just cosmetic incentives.

My understanding is that as long as they don't affect gameplay (or possibly, vanilla gameplay), they count as cosmetic.

I did some CraftTweaker scripts for Mystical Agriculture. They fill in a couple of small gaps in MA, and also let you make or duplicate not only vanilla plants, but the blocks, plants and wood from Quark and Biomes O'Plenty. Also spawn eggs for most vanilla mobs! The scripts are here on Github.

I know nothing about the best server hosting methods, I'm just saying what I know. I've heard quite a bit of server owners pay hundreds of dollars for premium, dedicated servers that allow hundreds of players to join. Maybe most don't, I don't know, but some do at least.

Minecraft is not about servers.
Servers exist. They are something else.
Mojang/Microsoft has nothing to do with any server other than Realms.
All Mojang does is say "Here are the rules to follow if you run a server".
