We've all seen the "what type of player is the worst in Minecraft" thread and it got me to thinking: how many different types of players are actually in Minecraft? In a lot of games you get various players, but usually the categories are quite bland and diluted. You'll have some casual players, some hardcore competitive types, some newbs, and a few hackers or little kids. As for as categorizing them though, there isn't much to do. So here's a small chance for us to try to figure out just how many different types of players there are. I'll start a brief list with a description of each, but would love to edit this post with as many categories and sub-categories of players that you guys can come up with!
The Engineer by Relyh
Master of all things Redstone related, the engineer is among the most cunning of Minecrafters. Using their advanced knowledge of redstone circuits, the engineer is capable of taking typical mundane tasks and automating them, removing the need for human input. The engineer is also capable of descreetly hiding their base from their foes, or brutally trapping them with a wide array of collapsible floors, automated turrets, or exploding traps.
The Builder by Relyh
Give a player a cube, they'll build a house. Give a builder a cube and they'll construct fantastic creations that rival the limits of traditional player's imaginations. Builders are capable of taking Minecraft's limited resources and erecting glorious statues, castles, cities, airships, world, or whatever else their creative heart's seek out. They are the master's of creative mode and the pioneer's of WorldEdit / Voxel Sniper.
The Miner by Relyh
The Miner is perhaps the most devoted of the groups. They spend the majority of their time deep beneath the surface, never feeling the warmth of the sun; however, in exchange the receive the thrill of exploring deep cavern systems, fighting fierce dungeons, and discovering rare treasure. The miner uses their knowledge of ore spawns to create the most effective mines so they can reap bountiful profits or they use their wits and survival instincts to venture deep into dark, forlorn caves only returning once they have satisfied their thirst for riches.
The Braniac by CanaryCasserole
The one that knows everything, if not, most things there is to know about Minecraft. If there's a problem, they're usually the one to fix it. This person has a lot of experience with the game and may sometimes be mistaken for a walking Wiki by less experienced players. Their knowledge is often sought after by newer players, leading them to be busy answering questions and providing tutorials. They are usually pretty good at most things in the game, but may still lack in some areas.
The Nomad by Robert-Frans
The nomad doesn't want a base, or even such annoying things like chests. He wants to travel from biome to biome, maybe even to the world border. He just enjoys the landscapes, small fun things he can do, or just player made buildings in multiplayer, and has as less stuff as possible. The smarter ones always have an ender chest with them, so that their most valuable stuff is always safe.
The Challenger by Robert-Frans
Normal Minecraft is not enough for the challenger: he wants a real challenge. Almost impossible extra rules, ruthless costum maps and in depth stories are his cup of thea. He isn't just Steve, spawned in a new world, he is a survivor in a post apocalyptic world, a tree spirit, the king of his own kingdom, etc. He knows very much about strategics, exploiting dangers and game mechanics and is very well disciplined: he will almost never break a rule or use cheats, to keep the challenge alive. Most likely he will find vanilla Minecraft too easy and has a lot of creativity and fantasy.
The Modder by Robert-Frans
The world of a modder is not just the Overworld with some buildings. It has moving industrial devices, magic spells, huge, destructive mobs, generated cities with intelligent dwarves, goblins or humans, everything he wants. He loves to play with mods and can't play just vanilla Minecraft anymore. Not seldom he makes (also) his own mods and thus has exact knowledge about the game mechanics behind the scenes. The modder does not update Minecraft, he updates his mods and updates Minecraft when needed.
The Griefer by Robert-Frans
The griefer is as hated as loved. His goal is to steal, destroy, kill, troll and spy and so make the lives of other Minecrafters as difficult as possible. The good griefer griefs only where it is allowed, thus being a fair challenge for the other players, the bad griefer griefs always and everywhere. If he has a base, it is of course heavily secured, full with traps and labyrinths. Mostly they will love faction servers, but a real hardcore griefer wants everything for himself and would even betray his own faction whenever he can.
The Hermit by Robert-Frans
You will never see or hear him, because he prefers to live completely alone. He plays only singleplayer and doesn't show his buildings to others, or just only to close friends. It is possible that he was very dissapointed in multiplayer, but it is also possible that he just doesn't like it. However, if he plays multiplayer, then he will also be quite on his own and live a simple, peaceful life further away from the community.
The Socializer by Robert-Frans
The opposite of the hermit. He doesn't play singleplayer at all, or just very seldom to test things, but has a large collection of servers that he visits daily. Minigames, factions, hunger games, just vanilla survival, modded servers, he has his own style and taste and is known by many other multiplayers. He knows what a good server is and what not and doesn't get attached too much to his buildings, because he knows that servers can shut down or reset worlds. He is possible a donator to one or more servers, and or has his own server, or is part of a server crew.
The Player of the Past by Robert-Frans
Hunger, potions, golems, the End... the player of the past rather takes a trip back into time to play classic, alpha or beta. He loves the simplicity of the game that time and not seldom also the world generators of those version, and not seldom he finds the current versions not faithful to the spirit of Minecraft. However, not every player of the past wants Mojang to change direction: they are just pleased enough with the possibility to play the older versions and maybe even sometimes just play some new stuff for fun.
The Fighter by Valiec2019
The Fighter is often found outside at night or in caves and dungeons, fighting mobs. They usually have high-level enchanted armor and weapons, and sometimes do not even have a base or mine. What they find fun in Minecraft is killing the toughest mobs they can find. They will often play on Hard or Hardcore because they consider the other difficulties too easy. Sometimes they will even fight other players in PVP battles, taking the weapons and armor of whomever they kill.
The Famous YouTuber by Relyh
The Famous YouTuber is a rare type of player who has managed to take two mediums: Minecraft and Youtube, and merge them into a financial boon for themselves. Several of these players have quit their normal jobs and make their living from producing YouTube videos. Love them or hate them, they have capitalized on a market.
The Not-So-Tuber by SuperCreeperGirl
The Not-So-Tuber is a YouTuber who more often than not broadcasts their channel or recording status on every server they go on. They can be easily identified by their catchphrase, "say hi to YouTube" or they'll be talking to their own YouTube video via text. Asking for their channel name often leads to an obscure channel or their username but with a very small number of subscribers.
The Fanboy/girl by the TheElbling1
The fanboy/girl goes around raving whenever they see a YouTuber of any kind, desperate for attention and to be in a video. They have a tendency to crowds the Famous YouTubers whenever they see one. They can also very often be seen wearing skins of Famous YouTubers, using their catchphrases, or otherwise "fanboying/fangirling" over them.
The Noob (Newb) by CanaryCasserole
The one who has just started Minecraft, and bought it from their parents' money (or for themselves). Having just started playing the game or have started playing the game a little while ago, this person has almost no experience with the game. They usually play, and die, because they thought creepers wanted a hug or something like that. They usually look on the wiki a lot for information, or they ask people for info on servers. If they even know how to get on servers.
The Generic Player by Canary Casserole
The player who doesn't specialized in any of the other categories, they just play the game because they love it. They can be any of the other options when they want to though they seldom have the adept abilities as the other players do.
They Loyalist by Cloud_Tower
The Loyalist can only be found one the platform of their choice. They pick a platform and will only play Minecraft on that platform. For some reason they have no desire to play on any platform but their chosen one. Playing elsewhere to them might be considered taboo.
The Elitist by Cloud_Tower
Similar to the Loyalist, the Elitist resigns themselves to playing only one of the available platforms; however, unlike the Loyalist, the Elistist considers all other platforms to be inferior and often harasses players who play on any other platform. More often than not their opinion is completely baseless and should be ignored.
The Suck-Up by Cloud_Tower
The Suck-Up player will constantly kiss up to a mod or OP on a server (often in the hopes of being given items or a position such as mod/OP). Some of the less subtle ones will say things like "OMG wow, this server is so awesomeeeeee!!1!" every few minutes, just to remind the server's staff that they are the greatest. These players can be quiet annoying to your average player and seldom achieve their goal.
The Good Admin by Earthman888
The Good Admin or "OP" goes around patrolling servers. They strive to keep things in order and remove troublemakers and hackers from the community. Their primary goal is to help nurture and sustain their server's community. The Good Admin is usually respected by most players on their server.
The Bad Admin by Relyh
The Bad Admin, unlike the Good Admin, is a player who has either created their own server or somehow weaseled their way into a staff position when they are horribly unfit for the position. This play often cheats and harasses players to "troll" them or for some other form of amusement. They often allow close friends to break the rules and wrongfully ban respected players.
The Server Owner by Earthman888
The Server Owner is a sub-category of the Admin. Server Owners have either founded their own server or purchased one from someone else. They are often responsible for financially supporting the server and building an adequate team to manage the server. Some Server Owners will spend more time in the console and FTP Files than they will the actual game itself.
The Hater by Eathman888
The Hater is a common player who "hates" on everything for no reason at all, just to annoy people. They constantly discriminate YouTubers and new players for no good reason. They will always consider themselves to be better than the other players and often accuse players of hacking if they can't seem to best them. The Hater is very often despised by the community and unwelcomed in most environments.
The Player of The Future by Kwerti
The Player of the Future is never satisfied with the latest update. Seldom seen on servers, they prefer to play the most recent snapshots whenever possible, sometimes even starting a new survival world. Any bugs they find get posted on the bug tracker, and Mojang's websites are always filled with their suggestions on how the game can be improved.
I was going to continue this list with a lot of others such as: The Hardcore Buff, The Survivalist, The Youtuber, The Griefer, The Fighter, The Roleplayer, The Noob, etc. but I really want to see what others will come up with first! If the list grows long enough I'll start adding Spoiler tags and might try to get screenshots to represent each type.
What if you're all of them?
I've found myself constantly adapting to different things/servers, as they need me for several different things. Some need me to build large buildings for them, while others want me to survive and is pure vanilla.
In general, I'll do just about any "type" of minecraft. Survival, building, or what you called "engineering" and "mining". My own preference, however, is survival.
More or less just trying to create a large list just to see how many different types of player exist within Minecraft. An average player, I believe, is bound to fit into several different categories.
The Braniac: The one that knows everything, if not, most things there is to know about Minecraft. They are usually pretty good but not the greatest at the other ones.

Just adding on to mine: If there's a problem, they're usually the one to fix it. (<-- Use as first sentence) This person has a lot of experience with the game.
You can add on to mine if you want to to make it better and longer.

I fall into a lot of those categories. Here's some I've thought of:
The Loyalist: Only plays on one platform (PC, Xbox, PS, etc).
The Elitist: Similar to the Loyalist, but way more annoying. Decries and even harasses players who don't play on "the right platform".
The Suck-Up: This player will constantly kiss a mod/OP's butt (often in the hopes of being given items or a position such as mod/OP). Some of the less subtle ones will say things like "OMG wow, this server is so awesomeeeeee!!1!" every few minutes, just to remind the server's staff that they are the greatest.P.S. I don't fall into any of the categories I listed above haha.
The admin: Goes around patrolling servers. Tries to keep things in order. Bans trouble makers. Respected by most players. Some may decide to use their power to try and make other player's lives miserable.
The owner: Creators of servers. Try to improve on their servers and mingle with the residents of the server.
The Hater: Hates on everything for no reason at all, just to annoy people. They constantly discriminate youtubers and new players for no good reason.

I like some of these. I'll add them all to the OP and lengthen some of the shorter descriptions in a short while.
The FailTuber: on every single server they go on, they spam in chat, "IM RECORDING PEEPZ! SAY HI TO UTUBE!" You ask what their channel is, out of curiosity, and they give you some obscure name... you look it up, and they have 5 subs. (I don't have, like, any subs, but yet I don't do this. Shocker.)
Btw, I'd be a cross between Braniac and Socializer. (meh, maybe mix in a little Griefer for good measure)

Alright guys, I just redid the OP correcting some of the spoiler tag errors and a few spelling mistakes. I've renamed some of the types and added a few new ones as well. I also expanded on all the short descriptions to try and keep with some form of consistency. Let me know if you find any more errors!
The donator: Will buy the top rank of a server. Uses their powers frequently. Sometimes they use them to help other players but other times they will use them to harass others.
The creative moder- A minecarfter that spends most of their time in creative mode. Creative moders sometimes use creative mode to build things like castles and villages. But other times they just do random other things like: giving themselves extremely good gear, even though they are invincible, killing random mobs, blowing up everything, and making other mobs fight each other.
