I am currently creating a dark forest on a creative server (Edawg) and I switch my time to night to see what it would look like. I noticed throughout my plot there was patches of light with no source. Like rashes they came back when I plugged up the bugged block. Some of the errors never came back, but some stayed so I left a block on the source. I do have one area were me and my brother have worked for hours taking out one error at a time by finding the source block and plugging it up, but the light is still there and we have plugged over 40 light sources. Does ANYONE know how to get rid of unwanted lighting error efficiently? I would love any help I could get, thank you!
I had a similar problem in survival. I lit some forested areas on fire to clear them but was left with some light sources floating in midair. I asked on the boards about correcting it. The suggestion was made for force an update as well as placing a torch and picking it up to reset the lighting. Neither approach worked.
The only thing that has worked for me was to painstakingly put blocks down to find the source. It has become sort of a holy crusade as well as a puzzle. Figuring out the best way to put up walls and see which side was getting light to narrow down the source has been a challenge. The novelty has since worn off but I'm finally getting close to the end.
I've also had a couple areas with the lighting bug where I never had a fire though.
It's a pain. I'll be interested to see if anyone has a different solution. There'll probably be an easy solution now that I'm about done doing it the hard way!
I have Same Problem like this
I was going to My mIneshaft theres three torch wasn't light up I was like scared if it old torch its like real life when out of coal we must flint and steel or light up it again then I find it on youtube but there is no of messages like that I tried to restart minecraft but I accidently breaked torch and then I placed them again its worked its lighted up it was right it a lighting Error if this didn't work just use glowstone or redstone lamp Instead of torch!
Hope This Helped
NOTE: You can Force Update your Minecraft (for 1.5.2 or lower) but those is fixed on 1.6 and higher
Bob, I did try all of your tactics before you said anything and they didn't work for me either. And sometimes even if you cover the source with a bock, it reappears.
encianting, I have absolutely no idea what you are talking about... Use a period once in a while, and read what you wright ._.
And Xzarida, Light comes from behind stairs because it is not a whole block. You also cannot place paintings or torches on stairs for the same reason. And isn't what we are talking about in this topic anyways so...
You can use MCEdit to relight chunks to get right of lighting errors; the one mentioned here is probably the same one as the black spots bug; the game doesn't properly update light levels, an issue that has been claimed to have been fixed multiple times with several of those reverted due to performance issues (see below). Note that depending on the size of your world you may want to only relight the area(s) of most concern as it can take a while to run.
And yes, this is already an issue on the bug tracker (for 1.7 specifically; here is an older bug report marked as "fixed" in 1.7/13w36a, and here is a post claiming that it was fixed back in 2012).
Hey look! Cake!

TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
