I was thinking of trying a combination of mining in a spiral downwards, but stopping to branch out and carefully plugging up any caves I uncover and keeping the place well lit. I'm also capping the entrance in the overworld with a trapdoor and a building. Will monsters still show up inside the mine?
Yeahhh.... except when I got blown up by a trio of creepers after having mined my very first diamond, emerald, and lapiz lazuli (is that the name).
As for my current mine, I'm apparently mining into a huge cave system. I can hear zombies all around me as I take my mineshaft deeper into the ground...
When I have full on iron gear and enough reserve iron just in case I buy the farm, I'll be looking into it. It's so tempting to go spelunking right now despite being unarmored and weidling a stoned sword...
If you light everything up, no mobs will spawn. Except silverfish.
Don't forget about slimes, which ignore light levels (except on the surface in swamps), although if you keep passages less than three blocks wide only harmless tiny slimes can spawn (other sizes require a 3x3 space, 2-3 high); they also only spawn in certain chunks below y=40 (silverfish can be found anywhere below sea level in Extreme Hills, in clusters similar to ore veins).
Only a few bad things can happen to you while mining:
1) Dont put torches in... you know the rest
2) Silverfish.. with no armor...
3) Falling in lavaaaaaaaaaa......
4) Fall into a ravineeeeeeeeeee......
5) Enderman teleports right in front of you... good riddance me.
thats about it
Mobs shouldn't spawn if you light up the mine well. But of silverfish can still spawn because they are in blocks. (Be careful with them, killing them with lava works for me)
Yeah, the Silverfish are annoying. It's bad enough that they like eating old books...

Y'know? I bought Minecraft because I thought it was a war game where you had to create tactically placed proximity explosive devices...
My fan fiction of the game: http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/1957118-programmer-my-first-fan-fiction/#entry24096758

Just place torches, glowstones and all that, that lights things up.
Well, it does depend on the difficulty your playing on.
I'll do that when I've gotten settled on my new world and start working on the mine. Just lost my last save file to some tick error...

My shelter/mining base. I'm mining out my basement...
The bedroom is up top. Glass on the sides and roof so I can see what's outside. There's a reason why it's only 2 blocks high...
The main shaft. That's a very long drop right now...

Why am I sharing this? Well.... because of this. Its location is somewhere near the Spawn Point where you enter this world.
And now... finally.... What in the nine firey underworlds is this?!? Digging out a wall I get a nasty surprise! X_X
And apparently I missed a zombie apocalypse somewhere... I guess the customary greeting involves lopping his head off with my sword...

TheMasterCaver's First World - possibly the most caved-out world in Minecraft history - includes world download.
TheMasterCaver's World - my own version of Minecraft largely based on my views of how the game should have evolved since 1.6.4.
Why do I still play in 1.6.4?
