People keep mentioning that minecraft will die when it stops getting updates but I would disagree. The argument, I'm assuming, is that once there is nothing new people will get bored and leave the game. This seems valid but you're not taking into consideration the heaps of ideas and modders out there that will continue to create new and challenging content. There's a million ways to play minecraft and there will be a million more after it's "complete". Minecraft will die one day, but it won't be at the hands of its last update.
Probably when a new game comes that has more depth and less issues.
Terraria is that game for me.
Lost a lot of interest in vanilla Minecraft ever since I got that.

When Minecraft stops being... blocky, or when they get HD graphics. I already hate 64-bit texture packs in the first place, they ruin the beauty of Minecraft IMO.

I agree. If you own Terraria (or Cubeworld) and Blockscape, i'd say there isn't much reason to get Minecraft. Both Terraria and Cubeworld oust Minecraft in exploration, and Blockscape ousts Minecraft in building)
1. I was a bit wrong: a superior doesn't have to be better, it just need to us something fresh, and yet be close to minecraft fan base (Which is pretty much everyone at this point.) for exsample: Starcraft (I'm going to use this game alot.) Starcraft isn't better then minecraft, but it's fresh and it got something else to offer. game like it might be the "minecraft replace"
Something fresh won't oust Minecraft. That's kind of like saying the 1.8 terrain generator is better than the 1.7 terrain generator because it's new and has a couple things the 1.7 generator doesn't. In order for Minecraft to die out, there has to be significantly more reasons to play the Minecraft-killer over Minecraft. Starcraft won't be able to do that because it's too different; a RTS game won't be able to oust a game in a completely different genre. Say Starcraft just comes out today (lolno); some people who play Minecraft might be interested and leave to play it, but the experience is different so to them playing Minecraft would still have some merit.
2. Mojang aren't idiots. And they know what the people want. Heck, haft of there people are community people.
You don't say. But I wouldn't say that they know what people want; they have yet to fix the terrain generator (no, 1.7 does not do that) and they haven't improved the combat system that some people have been saying has needed an overhaul since God knows when (and the arguments against it are pretty flimsy anyway).

Did something happen to you in your childhood to give you this unreasonable fear of rutabaga?
As many said above. minecraft will die once official updates end. Right now the game is completely dependent on it's constant updates. If it was 1.8, then 1.9 and then it just stopped, the game would probably die in about a year or two with only a couple biggest servers still going for additional few months.
I think it will carry on beyond the last update. There's a HUGE modding community out there who most likely won't let go, unless Mojang removes the ability to mod somehow.
Minecraft will never truly die out. Its playerbase will always be changing. This is happening already, with the hardcore minecrafters being driven mad by what Jeb is adding.

A hunter who chases two rabbits will catch neither
im not sure if it will ever "die" it will always be one of those game that a few million retro gamers still play. even more so sense its such a popular game. ill be showing it to my kids when I have them :3
I dont think it will die unless it goes the same way as Tribes Ascend. High-rez stoped updating so people got bored and left the game as long as mojang keeps updating it will be fine

Unicorn aren't extinct they just live with me in Unicorn Land
I don't think anyone can give a good answer to support any estimated date of the death of Minecraft. There are games out there that are decades old, yet still have people playing them. It depends on the person really, not so much the game.
minecraft will die, eventually, but that will be a long time from now.... but i dont think it will die if mojang stops updating it, cause many players doest care for update, most do, but some dont, and those players willplay it, just for fun thats my opinion
A lot of people are saying that it will die as soon as Mojang stops officially updating that, but I strongly disagree with that and highly doubt it. Sure, some amount of people may leave when that happens but that is only a small amount. Minecraft's community is very strong and large, especially when it comes to modders. The idea of fan-made updates is not far-fetched, either. The modding community will most likely help keep the game alive and going for a significant amount of time after Mojang moves on, so I really doubt everyone will immediately just drop the game and stop playing just because Mojang stops supporting it. It's just unlikely.
I may not be perfect, But without imperfection; life couldn't exist.
Support this if you're interested in reducing lag whilst simultaneously expanding the game.
I sure do hope that I get to buy or win a minecraft premium, before minecraft does "die"
I removed it.

I love a good discussion.
