Something that will always drive me away from a youtuber is if he/she/it calls it's subscribers members of an army, bros, or anything else that makes me cringe. And everything you can put there will make me cringe.
All you have to do is something original, something that hardly any other Minecraft YouTuber has done before. You also need to care about your fans. And have a good commentator voice. And do something other than minigames. And keep uploading for the meager amount of subscribers you have, so your videos spread out more and your subscribers stay subscribed and they tell their friends about how awesome you are and how they want to hug and smooch all over you.
And don't scream randomly like skydoesminecraft unless you want 10 yr old fanbase.
Ahh how can I say this without going on a tangent...If you only do YouTube because you have the desire to become big... then don't even start. I enjoy making videos, it's something I've always wanted to do. Do it because you want to, not to become big.
If you want to be big on YouTube you gotta have friends! If your doing a YouTube video all alone with a bunch of strangers its not gonna be interesting for other players to watch. You also wanna be funny people like funny guys like SkyDoseMC hes funny and that's what people are into. Also I would start with something bug like a minecraft let's play or a tutorial like paulsoarjr.
And if you have the time and a bit of luck, and a good skype connection, it's possible to even do a collaboration with someone, which seems to be a good way to build your audience. You don't have to climb big people's ladders, like PaulSoaresJunior, but if you look at people who have about as many subs as you, they're looking at your audience too, and you can lift each other up.
I have myself, my 2 friends and my brother all playing together on my server the only problem is that chat is dead because they don't play that much. My 2 friends record videos as well but they don't take it serious or anything so its no fun. They also play so little that even if I wanted to do a project or video with them its like impossible to do because they have no idea what there doing. Just wish mindcrack would let me join them lol. Would complete me right now because thats what I really want. To play on a server making videos with other people doing the same thing but obviously not a big crowded server like a few people who actually played and took the game seriously.

If you only care about getting big on Youtube then just don't because every "Big" youtuber only started to make Youtube videos for fun and only for fun.
paulsoaresjr created a video to help new players get their feet wet (back when nobody really knew what to do when entering MC for the first time). his video got added to the minecraft.net site and BAM! instantly he was huge.
just look at his original video, it's almost painful to watch it now that i've gotten so used to his experienced commentary. however, i never would have gotten into minecraft if it wasn't for this video.
I wouldn't say it's too late. The problem is that it will be hard to come out with something original. No one's going to watch a Let's Play Minecraft video that you made because so many of those have been done already unless the video involves something really original. It may be difficult to make an original video that appeals to the masses but it's not entirely difficult.
I just wanted to put it out there that I in fact do own a server (thats were my friends and myself are doing our series). We are whitelisted and currently not accepting members but we might soon. If you want to join and know when we are accepting applications you could just subscribe to my channel!
You won't become BIG big though. Just maybe a couple thousand on the high end.
