My point made on this topic was proved when I found Diamond Horse Armor and a Library at layer 3 (Seed: ender portal)
Those are the only real purposes of strongholds.End portals silverfish and chest with loot.Thats why people only look for the portal.Every YouTube video I have watched I have never seen someone actually explore a stronghold,only looking for chest on the way to the portal room.
I treat Strongholds like villages. The loot is not mine to take. I'm merely passing through on my way to my final quest.
But I will clear out the cobwebs from the libraries, and gradually I like to replace mossy and broken stone with proper brick stone. I see it as giving back to the world, and preserving the location for future generations. After all, there are only three strongholds in an infinite world.

By the time I've located the stinking portal I've usually found all the loot imaginable to mankind. It seems like the portal is always the LAST thing I see.
It's also the least rewarding, other monster have the chance to drop useful items.
I know, killing a good few Silverfish can give you the XP that caused production drops in Beta 1.8. Fighting them is a good challenge, too

The Sliverfish XP Grinder is a really bad idea because of two things.
1. It's too close to the portal.
2. No drops from them at all except XP.
That's just my opinion.
