For installing, go to your minecraft folder: C:\Users\Susie\AppData\Roaming\.minecraft\bin (On windows, I've got no idea about Linux and Mac), and right click your minecraft.jar folder, and select "Open With". If WinRar/7Zip isn't already there (WinRAR is actually faster, it's been proven when it comes to unzipping: the only thing you're probably planning on doing), and find WinRAR/7zip (fastest compression).
Once you are @ that screen, drag and drop the mods into the .minecraft (unless the installation instructions state not to), and test the file after each new mod, and back it up on the desktop or somewhere.
Except you would replace "Susie" with whatever her username was on the computer.

Okay. Thanks! It's kind of our extra job in our spare time to help people out here. Anyway if it didn't save a shortcut to the desktop once you play it once you can go to the appdata/Roaming folder we mentioned earlier and look for .technic or .techniclauncher or whatever the current version is called and open the folder. It SHOULD have an application that you can just make a shortcut to by right clicking it and selecting "Create Shortcut".
Most mods for Minecraft are completely safe.
Of course you could consider any online community rated T or M, due to the fact anyone can make anything for Minecraft. Here on our forums, moderators get rid of any mods that have viruses, scams, or harmful content to children 10 and under. There are still mods that can contain crude content, but all mods are required to have photos of their contents in order to verify their legitness.
If you need any help installing mods themselves, we have guides to that on the forum. Sometimes, the mods themselves have installation guides.
Many mods will require more than the mod itself, and the mod's will always say if any other 3rd party modifications are required for installation. Two of these modifications might me ModLoader or Forge.
For nearly every mod installation, a file compressor is required. This is a program like 7Zip or WinRar. I suggest WinRar BTW.
If your son wants Tekkit, there's a Tekkit Wiki right here. It also has a plain a simple Installation Guide.
I hope that helps you and your son.

Yes. It should download a .exe that you can run. But it is technicpack.net. Not tekkit.com. For whatever reason tekkit.com is a fan site for an MMORPG.
I got the shortcut took some work it's not in the technic folder I had to re download launcher which just opened it from tekkit.com and looked where it was directing itself and then I was able to make a shortcut. I think he will be happy with this for now.. No virus's were detected.. And a side note it comes up as voultz or something like that
I think FTB is better since it is less technical http://feed-the-beast.com/
FTB is just like tekkit though so itsAlso would you mind quoting people when responding it sends us a notification to the people who have set it up
Generally, to download a mod, all you need is 7Zip/WinRAR or MCPatcher.
On Windows, open the start menu and search "%appdata%" without the quotation marks. Click on Roaming, then .minecraft.
Click on bin and open Minecraft.jar with 7Zip /WinRAR to get into the files in the .jar. Copy/paste the mod files from it's folder into Minecraft.jar and the mod should work.
That's with most mods, but I'm not sure about Tekkit, since I've never used it.
Also, Tekkit is completely virus-free. Generally, if a mod is very popular, like TooManyItems or Modloader/Forge, it's safe to download.

Does it really matter? Both work, so it doesn't matter, this is for helping someone out, not arguing.
click it, i dare you. Oh! This hat that I am wearing is NOT white hair! No, my name is not Ash Ketchum
True. It's just that Winrar sticks that up in your face which is annoying.
