I'm starting this thread to get the Opinions of my fellow Minecraftians regarding mods in general.
These days more and more Minecraft players are choosing not to mod and stick with or revert back to vanilla.
I personally like mods ,but only to a certain extent. Mods that are Overpowered (OP) or destroy the original Idea and feel of the game are out of the question for me. Don't get me wrong I have modded my .jar too, but I use small mods like "Ore Magnet" I used to get so frustrated when the newly Mined Obsidian I spent an eternity whacking away at with an iron pickaxe falls into the lava lake it was suspended above, and burns it into oblivion. this is why I like Magnetic. Until recently the only way to get that function was to download "Not enough items". But I found myself cheating way too much with that one, and it destroyed the fun of the challenge. there for I recently found "Ore Magnet" which gives me the ability to save hard won ores from oblivion.
I also use texture packs, but That's pretty much the extent of my modding. I used to run Buildcraft, and IndustrialCraft but the modders that wrote those are having a hard time keeping up with Mojang's updates. I quickly grew tired of trying to find updated versions of my once beloved mods. so I too have mostly gone back to vanilla. there are 3 mods I'll ever run, "Forge" which is technically A mod in its own rite. "REI's minimap" , and "Ore Magnet" I used to run "Recipe Book" But I've been playing MC for long enough that I've memorized all my favorite recipes. So I don't use that mod any more. OH! make that 4 mode, I use English translations for enchanting. Otherwise I'm running Vanilla. its much easier to keep things up to date when you run as few mods as possible. The Mod writers out there are awesome creators, and I'm in no way discouraging minecraft players from modding there .jar files. but I've found that modding is for the most part more trouble than it's worth. But again, This is only my opinion.
I'm open to any comments, or opinions you all may have. Please do not hesitate to post comments on this discussion.
Mods is probably the only reason why Minecraft is still going. Without it we would be stuck to anything but the game content until the next patch. Many users including myself cannot stand that period, so we mod the client to add some content that can satisfy us. The mod itself is not important to me, but am I having fun with it, that's the question. Some people like to play with many OP mods, some people like to play with little mods, some people like so many mods I'm surprised they are even getting a good FPS kind of style. Without mods I think there would be no Minecraft. Sure we would still have users that prefer to wait till the next update for content, but many people like the fell of trying something new, unofficial, broken, fun, bizarre, whatever.
For me, I like to stay vanilla, but I play mods when it's in a pack like Feed the Beast and I do so often. Updates are nice, I don't care if they break mods, I'm not going to be that kind of person, but mods are definitely needed for this game to continue its life span.
I used to shy away from mods, because I was worried about not being able to update. But you know what? If I love the mods enough, they're worth waiting or not updating at all. They give the game so much more content and things to do. Most of the mods I use also give so much more life to the game.
I love mods. They add SO much more to do. However it still is fun to sometimes play without mods. Anyway, I'm still playing a modded version of 1.4.7, just because all the mods haven't updated yet. I just have multiple downloads of .minecraft so I can switch between mods and no-mods.
I used to think of mods as a bad thing but then I thought what am I saying mods are great any thing that lets me drive a B.M,W or gun down some creepers with an AK-47 is fine by me.
It seems the consensus is that modding minecraft is still the norm for most players. with a few scattered exceptions.
Since the recent 1.6.2 update, I've been finding it difficult to mod at all. Mojang's new file system is ROYAL PAIN IN THE BUTT! I managed to get Rei's minimap working again. I also got forge to work which is required for the minimap to work, I also through pains taking trial and error got the recipe guide to work as well. but "Ore Magnet" and other mods are as of yet unusable to me at the moment.
I will eventually get the hang of modding the new update, but for now I'll have to rough it.
As you all can see I only do function based mods. I still stand by my opinion about game experience destroying mods I still essentially play Vanilla.
I'm looking for more opinions about mods, so keep those posts coming.
I'm lazy, so I prefer vanilla with only Optifine since I don't have to download and install all the mods and then Force Update and re-install them all when I screw up the installation of one, but if I can use a mod pack like FTB, then I'll use mods. I also find a lot of the mods to be game-breaking, although that's just my opinion.
IMO Mods are pretty much essential. Unless you're aiming to squeeze out some more time playing the game and are deliberately playing vanilla so they can get some extra time on the game.
I don't like them as much as I could, mostly due to the way the community views them. I find that the game is rather flawed (most of the flaws real, some are more personal pet peeves which I do fix with mods) and a lot of people seem to think that an acceptable solution to these flaws is to get a mod. For one thing, they aren't the best solution to the problem, though this isn't the place for that so I won't get in to it. What annoys me is that Mojang has a very flawed game, they apparently have little or no intent of fixing these problems (the only one they appear to be fixing is the odd difficulty), the game has a very eager mod community, and due to all the mods in circulation that can potentially fix these problems the game is being credited as a near-flawless game despite the fact that the core game is quite bad.
This is actually part of the reason I don't consider the Mod API to be a priority; Mojang should be fixing up their own game, not implementing a feature that allows other people to do it for them. I don't mind the mod API coming while or after Mojang is fixing all these flaws, but if it comes before i'll be somewhat annoyed.
Don't get me wrong, I like mods, and they're great for extending the length of the game (and are for me the only way to do so; once again, flaws). Not to mention that, if someone happens to want something (e.g. modern guns) that would never ever be added to the core game, they can have it in the form of a mod. However, I don't LOVE mods simply because of the way the community views them.
Thanx everyone for your continued input. I like to see how many people are like mind when it comes to mods. As I said before I'm not against mods in general, just game breakers.
I'd be curious to see your evidence for that claim.
At any rate, like any human endeavour, there are good mods, and not so good ones. There are ones that will cross an individual's personal boundaries of what they feel are balanced, or "Minecrafty".
Me, I love 'em. Love trying out new ones. I keep the ones that fit with what I want out of Minecraft, and send the rest on their way with a cheery wave as there'll be someone else that likes them.
Sorry, Arkenor That thread was a typo. It should've read " These days it "seems" that more and more players are choosing not to mod."
Sorry for the misunderstanding.

Right now I'm trying to find that perfect mix of mods to fit my playing style and work well together, then hopefully I can stick to one SSP save. I'm currently using Forge, Optifine, ExtraBiomesXL, CraftGuide, Forestry, Mo Creatures, HarvestCraft, and Hunger Overhaul.
They all work beautifully together, and I added links to their threads so people can take a look. c:

Useless things, the concept of our minds.
Interested in a FOSS multiplayer minecraft-inspired strategy game? I'm currently making one. Comments welcome.
