So, I had a question regarding blah blah blah. The whole "Do Not Distribute" thing is unclear to me
Do not distribute in what way? (As in I am not allowed to upload it to the internet? Or every single copy of minecraft.jar i get should be from minecraft.net or mojang.com?)
I am asking because I was wondering if it is legal to privately transfer a modified jar to a friends computer, using an E-Mail, or maybe even switch it over using a private storage unit (such as a readyshare, hooked up to my router with a USB cable)
If the transfer of the file, is to anyone but yourself, it is not allowed. Even if they already have a copy of it, it is not allowed. You are only allowed to transfer the Jar from computer to computer, if it is for your own use.
Obviously, it is very difficult to tell, if you shared a copy of your .jar file with a friend, who already has minecraft, so that he could use the same mods you do, or something like that, but it is technically, against the agreement.
Do not distribute anything we've made. This includes, but not limited to, the client or the server software for the game. This also includes modified versions of anything we've made. Also, you may not resell any gift codes or licence keys - but of course you can give gift codes as gifts. This is necessary so that we can help stop piracy and fraud - and especially users buying keys that have been fraudulently obtained.
In order to ensure integrity of the game, we need all game downloads to come from a single central source: us. We hope you understand. It's also important for us that 3rd party tools/services don't seem "too official" as we can't guarantee their quality. Make sure to read through our brand guidelines. If you wish to make something pertaining to anything we've made we're humbled, but please make sure that it can't be interpreted as being official. Do not make commercial use of anything we've made unless specifically authorized by us in our brand and assets usage guidelines (which you should read as each of these policies form part of these Terms of Use).
It's technically illegal, but you won't get caught, and Mojang wouldn't bother even if you did. Just don't post links on the internet.
But really, there's no need to. If you give them the proper .class files, they can just drop those in their Minecraft.jar with a free archiving utility (recommend 7-zip.) They can get older .jars from assets.minecraft.net, and can downgrade to even older ones with the proper utilities (MC Nostalgia or Minecraft Version Changer.)
I was referring to modified .jars. You might as well misconstrue my post to mean no links, ever. (GET RID OF THAT LINK IN YOUR SIGNATURE! Quick, before the internet police show up!)

What about big things like technic? if you create a pack, and give it a URL it downloads a modifed jar. Won't Mojang do anything about bigger things like that?

Thanks so much, and Happy Mining!
Nothing to see here.

Your signature sucks.

Mostly moved on. May check back a few times a year.
What, like http://assets.minecr...2/minecraft.jar ? (That's the minecraft.jar for 1.5.2, free for all from the minecraft.net website its very self.)

You think magic isn't real? Consider this: for every person, there is a sentence -- a series of words -- which has the power to destroy them.
