hi, i recently bought my wife her own minecraft account, we only have 1 pc, but both wish to play in the same world, not at the same time obviously, but one at a time, both living and building in the same world, with our own separate charactors that have their own inventory...is this possible??
It should be fine. Because you have 2 separate accounts, your inventories will be saved separately from each other. The only thing that would be needed to be sorted out are chests.
I have to admit that I am a little surprised to find that different players in a world on the same computer do actually share the same inventory despite having separate player files in the world folder, I just tested it... I must have known this a very long time ago but have forgotten by now because the circumstances hadn't come up for me to notice.
This seems like a poor way for this to be handled by minecraft when you take into consideration the fact that a separate player file is in fact created for each player.
[ HOW TO]
In any case, if you absolutely don't want this to happen and don't want to use the honor system of putting your inventory into separate chests each time, then there is a way to do as you have asked when only one computer is available:
[ Here ] is described a way of setting up separate minecraft folders in parallel on a Windows PC that will allow you to have as many copies and even versions of Minecraft installed and even running at the same time on the same computer as you desire.
1. Create a new folder.
2. Put the minecraft.exe file in it.
3. Create a .bat file with these lines in it:
set APPDATA=<Location of the folder you just made>
<Path to the minecraft.exe file in that folder>
So it will look something like this:
set APPDATA=C:\Minecraft
C:\Minecraft\Minecraft.exe
4. Run that .bat, it will create a clean separate install of Minecraft that you can then update to 1.8, leaving your original install untouched. Running just the minecraft.exe will launch your default install.
This is now my preferred method of having multiple versions of Minecraft to work with. It keeps everything nicely separated and easy to keep track of and control, great for testing mod proto-types!
MCPatcher Problem
Unfortunately, I have found that MCPatcher always operates on the install in the default .minecraft folder location regardless of what folder you place MCPatcher into. I have posted a request in the MCPatcher thread to make MCPatcher operate within the .minecraft folder it is placed instead of only in the default version, or for there to be a version that does.
Please post a polite show of support for this in that thread so that they know it really is a needed feature. Even if you don't use HD Textures right now please still show support for making Minecraft tools compatible with alternate .minecraft folder locations.
[EDIT]
I was given the following information as a potential solution, it will have to be tested in a .bat file:
There is a command-line option for specifying the minecraft directory, but it's been a while so I can't guarantee that it still works. Just add -mcdir <directory> on the command line:
Once you have followed those instructions and have at least two copies of the same version of Minecraft installed on your computer you are ready to take the next step:
1. First, it might be best to put one persons name in the over-folder name of each minecraft install to make it easier to tell which is which. I would also do the same with the short-cuts to the .bat files.
2. Pick one of those installs to be the Host of the shared world and keep the actual world folder inside of that install.
3. Run the copy of minecraft that has the world folder, log in as that folders account and enter that world from Single player mode.
4. Once in the world [Open to LAN] in the same game play mode you are in (Survival/Creative) etc.
5. The other copy of Minecraft can then be run and logged into with the other account even while the first copy of Minecraft is running.
6. With that other account enter the [Multiplayer] menu then choose the Lan server you made, it should be visible in the list.
7. Both players are now in the same world but with their own inventory!
* This all works. I have set up and tested this exact same arrangement on an old computer of mine.
** If you have a 3rd account name available then you might like to have a third install of minecraft set up and labelled as "Server" or some such and keep the world in that folder instead. That way each person would access the same world through the Multiplayer menu in the same way, once the server account was logged into and the world opened for LAN Play. Whichever way works for you.
Enjoy!
p.s. It almost goes without saying that doing the above described will benefit greatly from having a fast computer to deal with having more than one copy of minecraft running at the same time. Also; once the "Server" copy is running and set up you should minimize it so that the system isn't trying to draw for both at the same time.
thank you minecrak!!!!! that is exactly what i was looking to do, it seems like so much work for such a simple thing to do, hopefully we an gat a laptop soon and both play at once, much easier that way, but your solution totally works for 1 pc!

ok so i tried this and when i goto login with the second account, it says login failed (not downloaded)
EDIT: nvm, i got it working, just a quick question though, the account that hosts the lan is the only one who can save right? other account doesnt have save option, only disconnect, when the host saves, does it save the 2nd accounts inventory and everything, or should i disconnect the 2nd account then save with account #1?
Yeah, whichever install folder of Minecraft you put the world folder into will have to be where it is saved, and it will be where each individuals inventory will also be saved. So the person logged into that "Server" install will have to [OPEN to LAN] and "Save" the game too.
Anyone who enters the world through the [Multiplayer] button on the main screen shouldn't have to worry about any of that. If you are asking if you can save the game even while it's running and the other person is in the world, well, the game auto-saves all the time I believe so I think you should be fine.
For backing up the world, making timestamped copies, I'd close the world (this auto-kicks any players out but keeps their data) then close minecraft then make the copy then start it all up again.
