When cows started dropping beef, pigs became nearly useless, as cows drop just as much food which restores just as much hunger, while dropping leather.
Now that horses are coming next update, pigs will not have any unique attributes, since horses will probably be better for riding.
What are they good for now, getting the achievement?
April 19 EDIT: I am not suggesting pigs should be removed. They do indeed add atmosphere, they're the the first mob, etc. They certainly should stay.
What I'm worried about is that pigs are overshadowed now. Cows give just as good meat, horses are certainly going to be better for riding. Someone said that horses are rare, and most players will stick with pigs, but we know that's not true.
Everyone eventually will find a horse, even in SMP, and forsake pigs. I'd like if pigs were given another purpose. They used to be for riding and meat, but they are now overshadowed by cows and horses. Pigs should not be useless like this.
They added it for it's unique attributes (assuming you mean in general, like meat and riding as apposed to pork and pig saddles) , and they keep it too add variety. Besides, pigs have become too iconic to simply eliminate just because they don't have any unique attributes.
That's the same reason why we don't only have one type of building block.

Just about every block has a use though. Even dirt. Used to grow trees for wood for tools and it can be tilled to grow crops. Pigs are just pigs.

Yes, I play skyblock quite a lot. I know the value of dirt all too well.
Personally, I'm guessing Mojang will make things balanced when horses are released. Even if they don't, I couldn't care less. I'll still find it equally rewarding and fun to ride pigs.
I always breed pigs for food, along with cows for food and leather, and chickens for food, feathers and eggs. Every main base I have ever built since my first one has had three animal pens. To me it is sheep that are literally useless since I have never gotten into the dyeing/building with wool thing (too flammable) and I can make any wool I do need with spider string.
Besides pigs are cute so they add a certain aesthetic quality to the game, they have also become an Iconic symbol of Minecraft almost as recognized as the Creeper.
Eh, they add atmosphere. And they're pretty iconic. Anyway, they are harder to start breeding early game than cows, but once you get a carrot, they can be bred faster and more easily.
Personally I like the way pigs hang around and grunt. It's ok if they are useless and worthless. IMHO Sometimes they can become a wee bit nasty, pushing you into areas you don't want to pushed into.
But pigs ARE more common than cows, if I remember correctly, so you're more likely to find a bunch of them. And if you already have a cattle ranch, just slaughter them for the meat. It's like asking why we have zombies or bats, they're not useful, but they're already there and do have a purpose, albeit not the most useful.

You need carrots to breed them now. At least when first starting out, it can take you a long time to find a carrot. You can get seeds for wheat just about anywhere on the surface.
OP is right; pigs do need a purpose. While I'd never agree to voting them out of the game, they do need some more "game" associated with them.
Perhaps they could do something even as simple as attract the attention of hostile mobs. Why would monsters go after a possibly heavily armed human target when there's a big, juicy slab of bacon walking around nearby?
TL:DR, pigs could function as a "bait" animal. And it would be functional/extra hilarious if the pigs know this and run away when chased, going "wee wee wee" with a creeper behind them.
Agreed. Pigs are the most iconic passive mob and they've been stripped of their value. Hopefully Mojang will give them some redeeming factor in 1.6 or else they'll be overshadowed by cows, chickens and horses.
Uhhh.. Well obviously pigs are helpful, for they provide food and, if your really desperate, something to ride. I have no idea why ur complaining about pigs. They rock. Now, because of this I'm gonna start a group of pig lovers

But they'll be as useful as Lapiz Lazuli; convenient when there's no cows or horses around.

Not everything has to have a direct purpose, especially if it's something that just walks around harmlessly. Not getting in your way or anything.
