EDIT: Also, re the "Infiniminer" thing. the "idea" for minecraft sprang up from Infiniminer, but is in no way the same. Infiniminer focussed on teamplay, and the block manipulation was used towards that goal. The games were also transient. Minecraft took the idea of a block-oriented, user-manipulated terrain and put it as the core of a survival-oriented game where you gather and craft materials.
But, you know, some people would go to play the game just to build complex machines and stuff just for fun, like, let's say, Minecraft on creative mode.
are you joking? "overrated" is a subjective term. I personally don't think it is over rated at all.
Therefore, only you can answer your question. Why do YOU think it is over rated.
People have given you their reasons nothing will change your mind if you think it is over rated then thats that but understand it is not something you can quantify.
Why do I think it's overrated? Read this post I made: This is the most popular "Indie" game and probably the most well known game ever! It's a huge part of the gaming section in Youtube, and probably has the most active community ever.
I'm just glancing at the general replies for this thread.
So few thing I've noticed. First, people compare games to CoD? Why CoD? Probably because that's the common grounds accepted for popular games. Do most of those people who speak of CoD actually play any version of CoD? Maybe, maybe not, but they sure as hell have heard of it.
Some other keywords that might keep popping up; original, simple, and new.
I've noticed you've made a reference to gmod, Garry's Mod. Maybe in hope to enlighten some people towards more games of the same genre. Maybe you'll attract a few people to explore into gmod and maybe even other games.
So where do they get this knowledge of games offered to them? Do they actually spend their own time digging around looking for new games, or unheard of games, or even explore games that aren't even published in their language to play? For a lot of people, the answer is probably no. So, as far most people are concerned, minecraft offers a truly new and novel genre of gameplay for them.
I myself think Gmod is sooooooooooooooo much more better. XD
Minecraft is an indie game, as indie means it was made by an INDEpendent person/group of people. It was made by Notch, then it was continued to be developed on by just a few other people. It wasn't made by some big company like typical games.
You act like Minecraft is being claimed as the only game that you can do whatever you want in. :\
@... uh... the guy who said Minecraft isn't an adult-y game: Minecraft XBox360 is rated E10 or something, and it's basically the exact same game as PC Minecraft.
I agree Minecraft could use some better physics, but it's fine with or without them.
To be honest, it probably is one of the best indie games ever. Can you name one more popular? As popular? Close to being as popular? That isn't Garry's Mod, you've already used that one enough. >_<
Mojang is a group of 16 persons. I'd called that a tiny AAA group.
Indie means the game was created without financial backing from a game publisher. Of course the actual definition differs, and some would say it matters how many people deal with it.
of course, since there are only 4 people (at a liberal guess) working on Minecraft, I fail to see how it wouldn't meet that requirement, either. those 16 people that work at Mojang work at Mojang, but not necessarily Minecraft.
But, you know, some people would go to play the game just to build complex machines and stuff just for fun, like, let's say, Minecraft on creative mode.
uh... and? What are you getting at? That's why Creative mode was added, was because people were using things like inventory editors and manipulators to allow them to simply build stuff.
As far as Gmod is concerned I stopped playing when v13 went live. I guess we're on different sides of the same boat though; I don't understand the overwhelming appeal of Gmod. It's cool and can be loads of fun, but aside from general fooling about, it's only really useful as a platform for addons. the "sandbox" applies mostly to add-on developers.

Lol see? People are calling it one of the best indie games. To me MC is in the very line between Indie and AAA.
It's popularity probably carried over from Alpha/Beta, where the terrain wasn't predictable and some of the flaws were excusable since it was still in development. Some of those flaws (like the lackluster combat system) were never fixed, though, and the transition from Beta to release actually hurt the game more than it helped since nearly the entire exploration aspect went away (you've got an infinite world... but everything's the same, so it doesn't matter) and the game started to get much easier. Not to mention that the survival aspect was never very deep; shelters are nearly impenetrable, diamonds are easy enough to get but are the top tier, and the general danger is just very low. At least building has always been good.
You know those people who say Minecraft has unlimited options? Yeah, that's a fallacy (unless you're referring to building as that's excellent). You want to explore or have an adventure? Sucks to be you, the world and it's dungeons are always the same; it doesn't matter how big it is, since it never varies a bit. Want a good combat system? You won't find that here, all it consists of is spamming the mouse button. Want to survive? Go ahead, but it's very easy and there is very little progression. Want difficulty? There's practically none, even with difficulty levels, and it's just as easy to get better at the game since it throws almost all the challenge at you immediately. Want to build stuff? Lucky you, Minecraft is perfect for that.
I suppose Minecraft just has a big community mostly made of fanboys. I'm not joking when I say that most of the main features in the game are lackluster. Mojang has to pull their act together and stop improving the building aspect of the game and start fixing the mess the rest of the game is in, or they'll be surpassed by another game (there are some games I have seen that already surpass it in raw building... though their redstone equivalent is worse and they haven't even started on things like combat and mobs)
Lol see? People are calling it one of the best indie games. To me MC is in the very line between Indie and AAA.
"Independent video games (commonly referred to as indie games) are video games created by individuals or small teams generally without video game publisher financial support."
Minecraft is very much an indie game, not matter how popular it is. It's not a term for how many people play the game.
Minecraft is overated because it reaches a MASSIVE fanbase. You have young people - to full grown adults playing the game.
If you don't like as much as me, fine by me. Infact I'm glad you have a respectable, and different, opinion!
Enjoy Gmod, or Terraria, or any other sandbox game out there
God thanks for an actually good and respectful opinion! I play both Gmod and Terraria. Terraria is actually challenging but still let's you play around.

I couldn't agree with this more. Thanks for a good, well written post. You answered a lot of my questions on the game.
Minecraft is popular for many reasons, and is still being updated constantly. Lets start with community. Now the community has a lot of fanboys, hatters , and a bit of trolls. Thought this is the case, Mojang updates us constantly, so we know where minecraft's going, and can suggest features and say what's wrong with the game and they can fix it. Mojang depends on the community, the community depends on Mojang. Now this game is indie because Notch worked on it himself for a bit, but he needed help game testers if you will, and until minecraft 1.0.0 we were game testers. The special few watched the game grow, but there was one thing Notch kept in mind, you have the freedom to do whatever you want. The community grew by the thousands and reached where it is today. Even Mojang itself grew by 5 people.
Eh, its a bit overrated. Buts its a new game, thats why many love it. Its way different than your average game. I hear a lot of people bought this game for redstone too, you can make so many things with it. And Mojang updates the game with a lot of new content. For example, this is me thinking about getting minecraft.
This game has a randomly generated world? Woah! AND you can build awesome structures without the boundaries of pre-made models? Wow. You have to get the resources to build stuff? Awesome! Its also updated with new stuff? Sweet! *BUY*

I don't see a lot of games like that.
A new game? You could preorder it since 2009! This is not new. There is some other games in which you get resources to build and stuff. Look up "Starforge", so much freaking amazing. An A LOT of other games keep being updated all the time. So Minecraft is not the only one of its kind.

Unfortunately, you just listed all the good things about Minecraft besides the fact that it has a massive community that produces mods to fix what Mojang is too lazy to do (well, besides the first point; it IS randomly generated, but the world doesn't play like a randomly generated world).
The whole concept of Minecraft wasn't new (infiniminer). Notch just had a lot of luck in getting this game so popular so fast. The hype around it then caused for a massive amount of people to take interest. The thing that keeps it alive is the modding ability. Every player can customize the game to their liking by installing mods, although mods aren't something new either, the sheer amount of mods is simply amazing.
The game is something different, but nothing all that innovating. It just exploded somehow. Sometimes you just need a bit of luck I guess
Though what matters now is that it's the only game of it's kind. Infiminer didn't really place an emphasis on building like Minecraft did, and from what I know, Infiminer isn't around any more.
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
Did something happen to you in your childhood to give you this unreasonable fear of rutabaga?
You have an opinion. I personally think it is slightly overrated. One of the things that keeps me out of the On-Topic sections is the sheer amount of fanboyism everywhere(on the internet, that is). I personally have grown bored of the game due to the fact that Mojang has taken the habit of changing things just for the sake of changing them(yes, I am looking at you, new sounds). I respect your opinion and hope you will do the same to mine.
Why do I think it's overrated? Read this post I made: This is the most popular "Indie" game and probably the most well known game ever! It's a huge part of the gaming section in Youtube, and probably has the most active community ever.

It's praised well enough for it's gameplay, and customability.
I'll tell you what's overrated: Call of Duty.

What are the two communities that are always fighting? COD and MC communities! They are both huge and defend their game so freaking much.
Lol see? People are calling it one of the best indie games. To me MC is in the very line between Indie and AAA.
