After about Beta 1.6, everything started to feel rushed and half-heartedly coded. For example: the End, The Enderdragon, and Redstone lamps seem like great ideas, but feel like they were tacked on.

If Minecraft was really getting worse in the eyes of most people, then:
1) This site would be a ghost-town
2) Minecraft would not be developed anymore due to not enough revenue
3) Almost no one would be arguing against you.
That's not always the case and enchanting-disabled servers are rare and even more rarely good.
Face it, on PvP servers you have no choice but to, unless you want to be raided until the end of time.
Do you know WHY you have no choice to? Because everyone else uses it. And WHY do they use it? Because they actually LIKE enchantments.
I think the game started going down hill when the idea of competitive pvp started becoming 'big' in the community. Let me explain this -
If you go to planetminecraft and look at the servers list.. you get this
What do you see? PvP, raiding, greifing, factions. Where are the survival servers? What happened to the mining and crafting that the community once enjoyed. Servers now are filled with children, swearing and moaning while using there nodus 'elite' hacks to 'pwn' the other players. I have run pvp servers and I know this is the case. The game is so unbalanced, its game breaking. Hacks like nodus give any body with a basic knowledge of a computer, the tools to exploit the entire game and breeze straight through it.
TL:DR PvP, no good survival, greifing, gamebreaking hacks, community turning into a bunch of cod fanboys.
Oh yeah.. I forgot to mention the immaturity in servers and the forums.
This.
Like, lol. If you want PVP, there's tons of games that are centered around PVP with a FOCUS on combat.
Eh I think the content Mojangs been putting out for a while has fairly scatter-brained, but as for it being "bad" that's completely subjective and depends on the person you ask.
Now I would say that the past couple of updates have seemed rather bland and lacking any real direction, but that's just my opinion. If the updates start getting more focused like promised, then i'm sure new content will seem more meaningful for me at least and i'll get back into the game.
Anyone notice that Survival isn't exactly survival?
Go to any server, you'll see diamond houses, donators flying around and voters getting all kinds of junk to survive with? On top of that, most of the land's pretty much stripped of all resources.
First I'd like to point out I am the first one to +1 the first post. So I can have some sense of accomplishment when this thread blows up.
Anyways, I think it went in a bad direction in the 1.7.3 update to be honest, that was my favorite update, yet pistons? Really? This game was medieval pretty much until these powered engines or whatever the hell they are came into play.

That's why I only play on servers with 2-3 friends....makes life easier when your sharing resources.
Survival servers are basically dead. Most popular survival servers are like Survival - PvP - Creative - Factions. I find it hard to find a good pure survival server that isnt crammed with plugins and horrendous spawns. Where have the days of towns and community building gone? On servers everyone goes away on their own instead of helping and building community storages and towns

Actually, I've found a really great one (Not sharing IP. You find it yourselves. I don't want to taint it.), but I've played with friends...not all that great IMO.
I disagree somewhat on the beds - it's nice to be able to set your spawn somewhere other than your original spawn point, and being able to skip the night if you're just going to spend it sitting inside a well lit area waiting for daytime is merely a time saving measure. Though I think they should have kept the mechanic of being woken up by monsters in the middle of the night if you aren't in an entirely safe area (to prevent abuse of the system). That being said, they're pretty much useless for that purpose on SMP...
I think it really started to go wrong around 1.8 - and no, not because of the terrain, though it is a complaint of mine. The hunger system is a pain at the beginning of the game and a nuisance otherwise. It neither helps in achieving whatever project one might be working on, nor presents a significant challenge. It's just a meter you have to watch.
Potions lack the depth they could have had. Minecraft is somewhat lacking in subtle combat techniques (ever watch Minecraft pvp? It's an undignified bludgeon contest). While there are potions that have interesting effects, they're completely obsoleted by straight up potions of healing and harming. More straightforward bludgeoning it is. Don't get me wrong, the combat system should not in any way be a major focus of Minecraft, but a little complexity would be nice.
But I think the real problem is the whole experience system. In order to maintain a set of enchanted equipment, you have to spend so much time grinding for the xp for a good enchantment. Time you could have spent doing something far more interesting. The funny thing is, Notch explicity said he didn't want the xp system to be a grindfest when he implemented it. Yet that's exactly what it is. Sure, there's the age old argument of "don't like it, don't use it", but since the benefits are so great, it's hard to keep up with other players who are using enchantments. Arguably they make the game too easy, but that's a matter of opinion. I guess what I'm trying to get at is, I shouldn't be forced to spend countless hours grinding to get powerful equipment (especially equipment that breaks so easily). That's a feature I really dislike in RPGs.

This. The community fell apart moreso than the game, IMO. It's become all competition and no cooperation.

Didn't read all the posts, just responding to the main premise of the thread.
Minecraft is not going in a bad direction. New things are being added, and sometimes when that happens it makes things seem lopsided until other new things are added to even it out. And overall it changes. I think the different modes is a great idea so that different things can be added but you can choose to play in a mode without them. For instance, I would like a lot of stuff in Hard core that might not be good in regular Survival, such as nightmares and sharks. Which is like asking for multiple games, but they are all using a common base.
Maybe someday there will be a lot of customizability, with a plethora of features that players can turn on or off just as now you can turn Generate Structures on or off for example, or pick Large or Default biome size. In the future maybe you could choose "No Jungle" or "No Bats" or something. Provided everything is in moderation and properly balanced, I think most people will seldom choose to not play with features that are available though. I don't get why there are witches, but I wouldn't dream of choosing for them not to be there.

I've grown used to it. I don't pay much attention. However, I think that it could use some tweaking. And THANK GOTT we don't have another terrain complaint.

Pots of Harm are OP, if you ask me.

XP seemed really tacked on, which is a shame.

I feel bad cause that's what I do. However, griefers seem to have also pushed people into this line of thinking.
Survival servers are still alive. You just need to find the right one.
Also on the issue that servers have there land stripped of resources: The solution I've seen is that servers have another world where most resource gathering takes place. This means that the main world will be still clean and ideal for building. Also, the nether and the resource gathering world on the server I'm on get's reset monthly meaning that almost everything is renewable.
Oh yeah, I forgot to mention: Most people who joined after 1.8 are just a bunch 10 year olds who play COD all day.(No offence to people who joined after 1.8)
My opinion is that the game never went in a bad direction. It still sells thousands each day. If it did go in a bad direction, this whole forum would poot and pout and end up turning to a dead or even worse whining community.

Of course you have a choice. You can not play on PvP servers.
To most people, it gets worse and worse. You joined in 1.8/1.0.0+ like most people with this opinion, correct?
Jeb is just an overall sloppy coder.
Ah alright, people who say the game gets "better and better with each update" usually joined very late in it's development.

None taken
Way to generalize.
