To date, all but two of the servers I frequent/prefer has encountered at least a medium-sized crisis and most of them went down under within the first month of my time there. Here are some of the servers I went and what I recall that happened there, in sequential order (most server and user names are withheld to either protect their privacy or they are obvious enough):
Server #1:
I went to a survival multi-world cracked server which has been a target for spammers over a few days, disrupting the chat. The spawn has been griefed once with lava during New Year 2012 and the rollback probably erased. The owner decided to have a new spawn built but then someone Force OP'd their way through and "killed" the server. I thank Vanfisa, a premium Finn guy who tried his best to clear out the lava with only a set of diamond armour and a bucket.
Server #2:
I decided to go to a Prison server after getting bored playing Singeplayer custom maps. A programmer introduced himself a few weeks after and pushed his ranks up. He had apparently schmoozed the owner or something into giving him OP abilities. He began to casually OP people that I don't feel deserved for it and one of the guards blew a fuse and began to rage at and jail me several times. To top it off, OP'd Guy began mocking at me, calling me Enderelia or something like that. He said that he helped build the drug section of the prison, but I feel that the rank its too high.
My suspicions were confirmed when one of the OP'd players griefed the entire prison with his friends and I felt that all bets are off. I found a guy who is one of the former co-owners, stating that the programmer did all of this and is corrupt. I agree with him, and tried reasoning with the programmer. It failed and he banned me. A guy whom I friended on Skype said that the server got griefed again and was not coming back. I wonder if that was karma.
Server #3:
I joined the server with a owner who uses a load of sex jokes throughout the server. He even switched his account name and skin to a suggestive one for God's sake. I got a "BuzzKillington" suffix for objecting it but I shrugged it off. During the next map reset, he told me to off when I find that I cannot sell an entire stack of stuff with Essentials unlike iConomy which calculates the amount on the spot. He acknowledged that he and his friends hate me and counted down, with one Moderator saying "Bye" at the same time. When I was banned, he roughly gave the ban reason as "WE DON'T NEED YOUR HELP BAIIII <3".
When he abandoned the server for Don't Drop the Soap, one of the members bought the server and attempted to revive it. Luckily, it suceeded and I was unbanned. The former members were all happy to see me and thought that my ban was unfair too. Sadly one guy invited the Avolition griefing team to the server and effectively killed it. However, it is revived the second time again but I don't think I'll be going back.
Server #4:
The owners are a feisty girl, her boyfried and a guy. I played around the server in piece...until one time I manage to stoop down to her level trying to figure out what happened when the stairs to the shop and furnace in the lowest sector and she jailed me out of anger. I understood her hot temper next time and we were (mostly) in good terms. That is, until the owners got into a Skype fight and the couple left the server and the other guy converted it into a (poor) Factions server. I never knew what happened after that.
Other servers that I have went suffered a crisis too but those above are more eventful:
A cracked server I joined before Server #1 was inexplicably shut down.
An RP server I went to eventually had their world data unexpectedly crashed.
Another prison server I joined had the owners, a forum mod and his friend fall out over each other and the forum mod left the server.
If there are anything unlucky that happens while playing Minecraft, feel free to share here. I hope I'm not the only one with such bad luck
Server #1.
Cracked servers are never good, it's impossible to ban anyone and most people who go on cracked servers are less mature than those who have actually bought the game.
Server #2.
There are loads of small prison servers that people try to set up then just fail. They require a lot more mods and moderation than other servers so you should always look for a big prison server. Also I don't get the karma bit, someone tricked his way up to OP, banned you and then griefed the server? I don't get how that has to do with karma.
Server #3.
You should be able to tell from the start that an admin like that's not going to be able to run a server well, and someone seems to have tried to take revenge on him.
Server #4.
Same as above, bad admins generally can't run a good server.
You should try looking for popular servers on server lists, and judge how good the servers are straight away.
I think I've personally been rather lucky with servers, I've never had a server shut down while I'm still playing on it however there's been two that suddenly fell soon after I stopped playing.
Sorry for the confusion there! The other OP that hacked #2 is actually a normal user but I didn't ask him on what he contributed to the server.
To be honest I tend to stay away fromservers like Killion or SuperEarth because I don't like that the communities might be detached/unwelcoming and a wall of chat blocking my way. If you know of any popular servers with friendly people and responsive staff then I would gladly join (the popular servers I went to are mostly minigame ones). Since I started Minecraft Multiplayer cracked I tend to find Cracked servers to join and it gives me the "home" feeling.
