Correct me if I'm wrong but... didn't Notch say he didn't want minecraft on Windows 8?
Not related to your post: This seems like a good idea on Mojang's part, but wouldn't you need a keyboard to access the options menu in the first place? I've never used a touchscreen computer aside from iPads (which don't support java and don't allow you to download files from browsers) so forgive my limited knowledge
Notch was saying he wouldn't develop an app for the windows store on windows 8. Not having minecraft in the windows store only affects windows rt users because they can't download applications from the web (only from the store). Full windows 8 users can still download things from the web and since windows 8 is compatible with windows 7 programs, minecraft will work on windows 8. I'm sorry if I didn't word this clearly.
I actually use 3D anagylph mode. It's not something I use 100% of the time, but it's actually pretty damn cool to see your world in 3D rather than 3D rendered in 2D. The only bad thing is that it screws up the colors. If we could use polarized glasses instead that would be better (but would require special hardware in addition to software changes).
Yeah noticed that when I went to change textures too, also noticed that the new way it handles textures apparently means MC now natively supports hi-def texturepacks without needing to patch anything <3
Guessing its for people with touchscreens (not me) and they probably have a decent ammount of existing code to work off from Minecraft Pocket Edition. I'm assuming Mojang is the one working on that, I don't really follow who devs what on smartphone apps.
Should be an interesting feature for those who can take advantage of it ^.^

Just because he hates it doesn't mean he should make the game less accessible for the people who have the OS. This is an example of a good developer right here.

I have a windows 8 tablet with an i5 processor. runs minecraft with far render distance with ease.
That being said, this touchscreen option does nothing for me. It would be really cool if it changed the ui to be like minecraft PE so I could show up all the android/ios tablet users.
I don't know why there's so much hate on windows 8, especially for tablets. Why would I buy a device that has the same functionality as my phone on a bigger screen when I can buy a device that can run skyrim and the adobe collection and everything I love on the pc, in a perfectly sized tablet.
For those of us who have full Windows 8.1 tablets this would be so useful if it was upgraded to be more like minecraft pocket... does anyone know if this is being worked on? It's unusable really as is since keyboard and mouse is still required. I dont expect to get 'serious' building done on a tablet but for wandering and casual building, it's fun.
I have (had actually) a Windows 8.1, Touchscreen 15.6 Inch Laptop, and Minecraft 1.7.4
I enabled Touchscreen mode to see what it does, even closed and open the game with the option turned on.
One thing happened, no extra controls, no extra icons or anything, just one thing.
The only thing that happened to me is that when I scrolled with the built-in touchpad, it moved the screen like the mouse does, so, maybe it has only that effect, because I can't "right-click" on the game without touching and holding, and that means to break long-lasting blocks, I'd have to turn it back off.
But! I'd never used my touchscreen on Minecraft without the option turned on, so I have no clue if it might usually do that.
I don't have the laptop or access to a similar one anymore either, or else I'd go try and see what else it does.
1. Exactly what is touch used for here? Minecraft is controlled via mouse and keyboard.
2. So, considering the vast majority of touch-enabled PC's are under-power OEM machines that could never even consider running Minecraft, and touch monitors for decent PC's are absurdly expensive ($5,000 for a 1080 monitor!?) I doubt this will see much use.
I don't know where you're looking for laptops but I got an 11" Asus touchscreen laptop with 4GB of RAM for $320...too bad this feature does absolutely nothing.
Touch screen does nothing for me. I play minecraft on pc, tablet pc, android, ios, and ps3, and xbox. On windows 8, on Asus T100 (Tablet pc) Touch screen does nothing more than act as a nuisance. It only seems useful for inventory management... completely useless in my opinion unless they bring over the analog and movement option thus disabling the need for keyboard/mouse (assuming you enable touch screen this inturn just puts a accessible touch GUI) similar or the same as minecraft PE except... that its on windows. I'd assume you'd need full screen mode to get the maximum control out of the touch screen functionality. All in all its not that hard. Port over the minecraft PE GUI and just recode it to work with the current minecraft build. Any more excuses and its clearly obvious lazy coders, the ideas on the back burner, or the fact that they simply do not care.
Have you tried using game controller pad with the touchscreen?

My brothers got windows 8 and he's got MINECRAFT
I use 3D anaglyph... :3
I'm getting a touch screen monitor too, so this feature should be pretty cool. I guess it'll be like pocket edition.

if you have a windows tablet like i do, you can use touch to move items around in your inventory but i prefer using the good old fashioned way.
