Okay, so I spawned a new world with a random seed. I looked around and saw lots of sheep. Good, I thought, I won't need to go searching for miles just to get the wool I need for a bed. Well my hunger started going down, so I started looking for some food. There weren't many oak trees, and none had dropped apples. I had gotten my wood from some nearby spruce trees. I looked around for some animals to hunt, but all I could find were SHEEP. The one neutral mob that doesn't drop food. (I mean out of the normal farm animals we always see.) So my options for food were as follows:
Kill some pigs, cows, or chickens (couldn't find any; didn't want to go too far yet)
Get some apples (not enough oak trees around)
Grow some wheat
Eat some zombie flesh
Well I wasn't prepared to go into a cave and face hostile mobs, since I didn't have any food to refill my health. I could grow wheat, but that takes time. I saw some pumpkins and remembered that I could make pumpkin pie (this was the 1.4 pre-release) since I already had some sugar cane. I paused it to check the crafting recipe, thinking it was just a pumpkin and some sugar, and then I saw it also needed an egg. An egg, which depends on the presence of mobs other than sheep.
I had to commit suicide at least once to refill my hunger. And I never got any zombie flesh either, because all that I saw were skeletons. Sure, I got some bone meal, but only enough to fertilize three wheat, which made one loaf of bread, which didn't nearly refill my hunger enough to start regenerating health.
If sheep were edible, which would make sense as they are in real life (not to mention the fact that cows, pigs, and chickens are), this wouldn't even be an issue.
In case you want to try, the seed is: -8694398873287496235
With the expansion of food types, it actually makes sense to be that Lamb should be an option.
I could wish nothing more than to live on Baked Potatoes and Lamb in Minecraft. This change would also catapult Sheep to the #1 most useful farm-animal mob in my mind; With Cows currently holding the spot only due to the food + Leather which I use for books.
cows drop food so that people in real life who would be offended by the consumption of pigs have another option available to them. and vice-versa.
sometimes we forget that many aspects of games are due to concerns that have nothing to do with gameplay at all.
so to those who suggest cows should not drop food, you must realize they drop food so that someone who is offended by eating pig can have that option. conversely it's the same for those offended by the consumption of cows to have the option of pigs and chickens. Mojang is covering their bases.
They should drop food. If it can be eaten IRL it should be possible in MC.

Freedom is more important than health, more important than safety or security. A life's worth is not measured by its length but by the length it is lived with liberty. Freedom above all.
I love that you posted this why not have Lamb chops available to us minecraftians.
Now i do see how it could over power the other animals but in that instance for your seed it's just one of those time where you think to yourself and wounder "why not!"
so if lamb was implemented I would be very much pleased!
Beside why don't you just kill a spider chop a tree make fishing rod get fish and cook em'!
I think if sheep were able to drop food they may become to useful since they already provide wool.
I don't see why. The other three main passive mobs all have a use other than food. Chicken farms are an absolute necessity when using bows. Cows are a short, mid-term necessity if you want bookshelves or books (some of the good mods even make extensive use of books, so getting into mystcraft requires a cow farm). And Pigs have the use of sprint speeds without using a lot of hunger, making it kind of fun to travel between "minor" bases and useful to build roads. Adding mutton as a drop for sheep really won't make the mob more useful than the others, as the only real need for wool is decoration and beds.
For balance purposes, I guess. And cows should not drop food neither, if you ask me. That way, we would have a reasson to have a farm for every animal: sheep for wool, cows for leather, and pigs or chickens for food. The way it is now, you can do with a cow farm, and a spider trap.
I agree, pigs are technically useless in farms when you can just get cows that drop leather and meat. But of course I still have a huge farm of them because they're adorable, lol. (off topic, but meh)
But anyways, are you sprinting? You could last a heck of a lot longer if you don't sprint.

My posts will always have typos and that fact will always drive me crazy.
Cows drop beef and leather, and can be milked, pigs drop pork and can be ridden, chickens drop, erm, chicken, feathers, and lay eggs, and sheep drop...wool. While wool blocks are important very, VERY early in the game (beds, anybody?) and as decoration, they serve no practical purpose, being less blast resistant and easier to break than just about any other material besides dirt, gravel, sand, or soul sand.
In a nutshell, I want to eat sheep. Lamb/mutton/some sort of sheep meat wouldn't make sheep unbalanced because all of the other mobs already have multiple uses compared to the sheep's one, which is to produce wool.
So I tried this seed and this is what I did: I punched a tree and some grass down. got 4 seeds and 6 logs. I made a Crafting Table and with it a Hoe, a Shovel and a Pickaxe. I planted the seeds next to a river and went mining. I found a cave where I punched a Skeleton to death and mined one Coal vein. I went back to the surface and got my first 2 breads when I had lost only 2 shanks. I went back in the cave with a Stone pick and sword, mined another stack of coal, 4 Iron, killed a Creeper and another Skeleton. That's 4 Bread already and it's not even night. You must be really bad at Minecraft.

They are making pigs more valuable in the next update. EVERYONE is going to want a little oinker they can ride around on. And by ride around on, I mean control while riding.
When I spawn in a sheep infested world, I scream and go crazy because I want food. Then I calm down, cut down some tall grass until I get seeds, and plant them. Then I use bonemeal and I have food...Like a block

agreed, to an extent...

I have a Spoon. Your argument is invalid.
Then they should add pig jetpacks!
