The first time I played minecraft years ago I was blown away.
At first I was like: The graphics are ing retarded.
After some minutes I started digging up a hole in the grass. End up in some sort of cave unable to go out of it, almost dying in a lava river. I started walking and everything was dark as hell. I learned to craft torches and made a couple. I had to move with caution and the sense of claustrophobia and the fact you needed to save your torches was really getting me into the game. After 5 minutes I was able to get out this huge cave. When I destroyed the block of the surface and saw the light of day I said: , this is one glorious game.
Doing this with your friends exploring caves was great, and even better when finding people's bases by accident and stealing their stuff was just so fun. Making your base underground and trying not to be seen when you descended to the surface to gather resources, trying not to get caught when you asault a base, making enemies/allies that you encountered around the world.. the posibilities were endless and it was the most fun game I ever played. The sense of freedom was amazing. The menace of the mobs mixed with the menace of agresive players was the key of the game and what made it great. And by the time I played there wasn't many plugins yet.
All of this has been ruined by cheats. The game was able to put you in a real atmosphere were the world felt real with really ty graphics, which is an amazing acomplishment. Now knowing people is using X-ray around you makes it worthless.
Who the hell wants to spend hours just to find a couple of diamonds when half of the server is making diamonds like crazy thanks to Xray?
Who cares if you put real effort into making an awesomely hidden underground base if someone can switch to extreme view in Optifine, enable XRay and see your base 1000's of blocks away?
Who cares how many new stuff and fixed developers keep making if they can't make a solid and efficient anti cheat system that bans cheaters for life?
Seriously, who is aspie enough to play this game when anyone with a brain cell can type 'XRAY MINECRAFT' in Google and have it installed and working in minutes?
All these crappy Anti-xray methods can be bypassed so easy it's laughable. And don't get me started with Nodus. There is no incentive anymore to play this game unless all cheaters are vanished forever.

I know this is not the main point you were trying to make, but extreme view distance is only 512 blocks (twice far, which is 256). Not even a whole thousand, barely half of one, let alone thousands with an "s."

It's still pretty terrible though as they can see all the way to bedrock.
I don't understand why people have to do things like this. They ruin the game for everyone else. It's really sad that these peoples main goal is to ruin your fun.

You could see that anyway. Render distance only affects how many chunks are loaded and rendered, but the chunks extend (and are visible) all the way from bedrock to sky level, no matter what the setting. Only the horizontal view distance is affected.
i agree with you here the problem is there is not much the minecraft developers can do apart from strongly restricting modding. all i recommend doing for you is to find a white listed server with good admins and moderators that sort out the hackers so you and your friends can go digging and raiding once again .
What does whitelist guarantee? If the server is decent it probably has a big player base, big enough so players who use XRay subtlety never get caught.

1: Bah, Minecraft was better with 1 million people rather than 10 million people... God... those were the days.
2: Im not sure if you know it but most xray packs contain viruses. Keyloggers and such

I understand that, I'm just saying as most people tend to 'hide' things underground the horizontal view distance doesn't mean much as the underground is revealed.
I wouldn't say cheats "kill" the game. You play the game however you want in singleplayer. But they do ruin the SMP aspect quite a bit if people constantly abuse them. There are some plugins that get around cheats, but there is always some way to bypass it.
I can agree to it does ruin minecraft for others and me alone. I hate nodus
I use it for my single player world/My sister's lan server (On the lan server our only goal is to blow stuff up with creative mode, And in my world I don't think anyone cares, But in other servers I disable it.)

Not as much as xRay though.

Don't get me started in servers with cprivate by default on every chest and door. Or when they block lava and so on (assuming it's a PVP server).
But all of these crappy limitations are mainly due hackers/cheaters.
Has locks...
Blocks lava
AND TNT...
I can't find another offline server thats on 24/7 though :/

You think magic isn't real? Consider this: for every person, there is a sentence -- a series of words -- which has the power to destroy them.
It's still pretty terrible though as they can see all the way to bedrock.
I do hate those people as well.

He means you install an xray mod or texture pack, in addition to using Optifine to increase your view distance.

Also, there are many ways to find and ban hackers. Look at the MineZ mod - they do it pretty well, although x-raying is useless in MineZ.

Now mostly, I sit in my rocking chair and enjoy a nice single player game and slap mobs around. No chest pains for me anymore.

Bahahahaha, this is the funniest thing I have read today, thanks!
BTW, there is a thing called single player, it is pretty cheater free. You should check it out.
You're getting way too worked up over how other people like to play their games.

He's talking about SMP. The mode where "other people's playing styles" often consist of lava and your house.
