One way to prevent this is to make people log in with their original username, but their display name on multiplayer servers and such are the ones they changed it to. If they did this, it would stop that issue.
Wouldn't it just be a better idea to log in with your email like you do if you've migrated to a Mojang account?
However I think maybe players should get one free change and then after that pay maybe £2 - £3 after that. Like Xbox. But the person who said they would pretend to be a famous YouTuber then lets just say who said the user had no choice, they would obviously get a choice. I hope it is brought out in 1.4 though as I need this update badly as my username on MC is not my YouTube name. If it doesn't come out by christmas then I will just pass my current account on to a relative as a Christmas present and re-buy the game. However when I do this I bet it will come out 1 week l8r. Just you watch
Many games have an "account" name which nobody sees and a "character" name which is seen in game.
If Minecraft adapted a similar system, account names would remain the same, even misspelled, and each account could create an "in-game" or "character" name. If people are worried about names changing too often, the frequency of changes could be limited, or cost money. In-game names like "Notch" or "Jebs" or others could be easily blocked, and people with popular youtube channels could always verify their new character name on youtube, if theirs is stolen. Remember that their account name would stay the same anyway. If impersonation is a huge issue, you could always block in-game names that are the same as an already existing account name.
No matter how it is implemented, my point is that the benefits outweigh the detriments of name changing. Most of the negative effects can be countered and discouraged, without too much work.
Yeah that would be good, I want to change my username to something else. I was like 11 when i thought up of my name, looking back to it, it now sounds gay.
For the love of all that is respectable, do not use the term gay to describe things you don't like. I know this is horribly off topic, but really, just please don't do what you just did there. It's offensive, rude, and it can make you look horribly ignorant.

Enabling players to change names is something I would support if the consequences wouldn't be just so colossal.
There are many existing mechanics that rely on your IGN being your ID. LWC locks, permission / region plugins and MCBans to list the most popular ones. It would be very troublesome to deal with, especially with a massive community like minecraft.
I'm voting no.
EDIT: I'm thinking if you really want another nickname you should just buy a new account. That little money Mojang is charging us for their awesome work is easy to come across, even as a 10 year old.
Actually, My server uses a plugin that changes ingame names. My name is exAera in minecraft, yet to everyone on the server it shows as "Aera" except over my head. All commands pick up on just the name "Aera", even lockette does.
Edit: And to your edit...Thats horrible...Some people actually cant just splurge $30 when they want to...In today's economy, most families have to live paycheck to paycheck
With a UUID (UserID) assigned to the account name changing wouldn't be a problem. You couldn't take one that has already been used, and even if you change it your UUID is banned not your display name.
Pretty standard practice, those of you freaking out about usernames being bad and a ban problem, need to learn something about user databases before you go freaking out.
I think it's a terrible idea. It's your fault you spelt your name wrong - with name changing some douchy little kid could go around being famous youtubers and destroying their reputation.
So stupid because it can be abused so much.
You wouldn't be able to change your username to one already in use.
I think you shouldn't be able to change your username because if you get banned you could just change your username and go back on the server.

This had already been explained. And yes it was my fault, but I'm not thinking I'm going to spend another $30.00 on a new minecraft account just to have a misspell correction.
I don't understand why people are saying it shouldn't be put in because of impersonation... Famous people have already picked their usernames. -.- People can't impersonate them if the usernames are taken.
For example: SethBling
Someone could pick SethBIing (The L in Bling is actually an uppercase I). See, looks exactly the same, right?
Edit: Well, on Minecraft font it looks the same...
I personally think it would make for an easier/cleaner online game-play. Most times when purchasing Minecraft people choose usernames that they later on do not tend to like as much. In example, Say a teenager/child/adult etc purchases an account 2 years ago with a username they once liked. Later on (Few years later) They realize it wasn't such a great idea -- Resulting in the only way to change it being purchasing a new account.
Also, With the banning issues/restrictions;
I, believe that there should be a user ID that could identify the player even if they had changed their username. Even if the username has been changed and an Administrator on a server bans the player by the changed username it would ban future account usernames as well as previous usernames. Another example, Take the way Steam sets up usernames. Given a player ID and the first username of course. Following that you can change the username but the previous one will be implemented into your account. Another add-on that could help is the ability for administrators to access and see the players previous username(s) to help out with confusion.
Adding to the following you should NOT be able to already take current usernames of players. Take a famous YouTuber for example, Someone decides they had a bad day and want to change their username to a already existing YouTuber username just to be a troll. Taking note many people panicked on this matter why I state it.
Other than that I really do support the idea of being able to change the username of a Minecraft player. Whether it's once a year you may change it or paying a small fee to have a better in-game name. Either or it would be wonderful for the Mojang group to try the new technique out.
Of course there could be problems with people abusing the system, but I don't think banning would be affected if it's tied to a user's account and isn't based on their username.
There are people who make embarrassing names because they think at the moment of making their account that all the good ones are taken and they might find a good one later and want to change theirs. There's probably some kids making accounts right now with names they'll regret in the future.
maybe this could just change in game names, and there could be a way to stop people from changing to a famous you tubers name. maybe an email system with the you tubers them selves
it would have to be a human run process though
Server admin types /ban xxxx
Server automatically contacts Mojang for xxxx's Universal ID.
Server reads /ban xxxx as /ban (UUID of xxxx)
Server bans UUID of xxxx.

I have discovered a truly remarkable proof of this, which this margin is too small to contain.

Although we could also have ID numbers like blocks and have a way for servers to remember you.

Don't like the terrain? Go build your own. You can totally do that in this game.

So in the database you would have...
UserID: J87SF64SL843SNMF8190SJNDF
UserName: JoeSchmoe
Then they could change their name:
UserID: J87SF64SL843SNMF8190SJNDF
UserName: JoeGo
