Why are we bringing logic and science into the mix? This is Minecraft, where blocks float, you travel to new dimensions, Obsidian (which is actually very glass-like) is almost unbreakable, and green p-things (if you know what I mean) explode on a regular basis!
Well actually there isnt logic behind this seeing how there are mini wells of water in the minecraft generation process. But yknow SCIENCE MAN!

Exactly my point.

I have no idea what to put here, nor do I have any idea what to make my profile pic. Ideas welcome, I suppose. Now satisfy my like *****ing hogging self and give me a little rep, please and thank you?
Desert Village Blacksmiths may have saplings in their chests (not to mention lava and furnaces), and farms have dirt (and water, for a cobble gen, plus food). Besides, there is trading!
Wow. That's a big stretch, but I believe it's possible. But you have to run like hell to find those saplings!
Well (cwutididthar), don't forget that the flatworld desert preset has a lot more altitude than the classic, meaning it won't have the usual slime apocalypse going on. That ought to make it more bearable. Though I should point out that if you can find a village, it'll have a traditional well with a whole ton of water source blocks in it, instead of the one measly source in the desert well.

The original superflat wasn't meant to be played. It was intended as a blank slate where you could build huge things in creative mode - death stars and Angkor Wat and a mile-tall Jesus. But most of the new settings are quite playable, especially "Overworld."
I think they're just meant to be fun to find. But when I consider that they provide an infinite water source, they should make them slightly more common and make water a LOT less common.
The water comes from underground springs, But where does the underground spring get its water from?
Aquifers. They're basically big pockets of underground water that soaks through porous rock. In real life, anyway.
It's like when a sponge is full of water. That's where most water is, when it isn't on the surface or in the air.
Edit: and actually a desert is a perfect place for aquifers, since they like to exist in sand and sandstone. There shouldn't be so much surface water though. Surface water usually evaporates and leaves salt.
I think that water lakes should actually become oasises with trees, grass and animals which is slightly rare than Desert Wells, making Desert Wells actually useful.

Really? I'll have to make a completely fresh, vanilla world and check again, because I very distinctly remember taking a bucket of water to a desert well and depleting it in one go. Probably some sort of one-off glitch.

Rain runoff from mountains as well. In California, I lived in the Mojave desert and our water table (and aquifers) were fed by the nearby mountains, and would be fully "replenished" every year after the snow melted off. Water isn't as rare in the desert as people think, it just doesn't often collect on the surface.

Life is not measured in the breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.

Yeah there's four regular source blocks surrounding an infinite source in the middle.
I like them. Yeah, they serve no purpose, but I do most things in MC because I can And don't start to bring science to MC, e.g. infinte powersource with redstone. etc...

Just look at it. It contains my entire reply for this thread. Thank you.

There're five source blocks in a desert well.

You think magic isn't real? Consider this: for every person, there is a sentence -- a series of words -- which has the power to destroy them.

But my maps are kinda old, I have like 10 from a few months ago and I just play those. So maybe that's why.
