So I have been trying to find the end portal for quite a while now. I traveled a ways, then my eye of ender sunk into the ground. So I camped out in a strange glitchy village nearby (it was literally cut in half) and began digging down to find it. I hit bedrock and found nothing. Thinking that I made a mistake, I tried again, and it told me to dig somewhere maybe 20 blocks away or so. I did this at least six times afterward, in random places. First it would tell me to go one way, then I threw it again from the same area a little while later, and it said to go a totally different direction. I read on MCWiki that it will sink into the ground within 20 blocks of it. Does that include vertical distance? Like if it's more than 20 blocks below me, will it glitch out? I also thought that maybe since it's 20 blocks, then the places it sunk into the ground were just near the portal, not directly above it. But some of the places it sunk into are more than 20 blocks away from each other.
This may change soon though; there is a very very very extensive cave system underneath me, and it could be somewhere in there. However, this cave system is so long that is extends all the way back very close to my home, which as the world was made back in Beta 1.5 or so, has to be a long way (because of the generation with the update when it first came out and etc; so that could take a very long time.
Anyway, just wanted to know if anyone else experienced a similar problem or knows what's going on or if I'm just completely overlooking something really important here.
I'd love an answer as soon as possible! Thanks in advance!
SAME HERE! I could never find it! :/I love when people talk about single player considering I never play it though I should. I did a long time ago but then I got into toomanyitems...
I've had my fair share of trouble finding the portals. I never considered the vertical concept, though I've never heard of them being too deep to detect. I'd go down in the cave dig down from there in the 20 block radius where the eye of ender sunk.
Something like this happened to me. I was a long way from my house in a desert and the Eyes of Ender just kept on going back in forth in the shape of a line. It fixed itself though after about 10 times of me going back and forth. :/
But some of the places it sunk into are more than 20 blocks away from each other.
They could be up to 40 blocks from each other and still be 20 blocks each from some central point. Though to be honest I've never heard of this before. Is it a new addition with 1.3? Because in 1.2.5 my eyes went into the ground directly above the portal itself.

Oh, that could be your problem. Had you ever been in or near this area before, prior to when strongholds (or more specifically, end portals -- not sure if it was at the same time) were introduced? If so, then the terrain (both above ground and below) will have already been generated, sans stronghold. If you haven't built anything important in the area, you could delete the chunks with a world editor and then let them re-generate, hopefully with stronghold included, with the new version.
