I was getting blisterblinded while playing on hard with the latest Snapshot (which did update mob AI), so I think Minecraft's difficulty is just fine.
The snapshot didn't really upgrade mob AI, for the most part the only added difficulty was that skeletons could shoot faster if you were closer (but did less damage).
fine... since so many of you are being babies about this whole thing.... You don't need a multiplayer map, or a mod to make life difficult for you. What you do is you have a friend go in before you and start leaving little "presents" to find in the landscape. They'll have fully enchanted (Everything) tools/armor/whatever they heck they want, and they just go around trying to troll you. If you find that too easy you either: a. need to stop complaining because you are counting yourself as a friend and are thusly too stupid to talk about these things; b. need to find a friend who doesn't get lost so easily; c. find a friend who actually knows how ot play minecraft; d. find a friend who knows how to troll on minecraft; or e. stop cheating.
here's a good way for self-trolling, set up a thing where when you next get on the map, pull a lever, and underneath a series of pistons auto-spawns a horde of withers. No. you cannot use your old gear, throw it all into lava before you start. And now, we will step back while you find out just how "easy" minecraft can be.
Yes, I should come up with convoluted traps for myself (or get some poor guy to do it for me) just so I can have an ounce of difficulty in Vanilla. No thanks, pass me a mod.
I wouldn't say Minecraft has become easy, I'd say it has become more tailored to creativity and ingenuity, and less survival and hardcore gameplay.
With Minecraft it's alot harder to tell where it's going to go because it's not linear by any stretch of the imagination, but one would suspect that it's not going to be focused on intense gameplay and advanced combat systems.
As with all videogames, difficulties vary for different players. Hard might be easy for you, but for someone else, it might be extremely difficult. The most obvious example is a noob to the game, who will have an extremely hard time keeping up with his veteran friends who are able to truthfully brag about their accomplishments on hard mode. Furthermore, games get easier as you play them, no matter what you think. There comes a point when you master a game, and once you hit this point, everything is easy. This is a sign that you have played too much of the game and should go outside. But, I know that some people are so accustomed to their computer screens that they shriek in agony as sunlight touches their skins, so I guess there will always be people who complain about a game being to easy.

"Map making isn't about painting a canvas, it's more like creating a giant block and carving a statue out of it."

I would agree. To be honest, I would be satisfied with just a decent combat system (regardless of simplicity). All I care for is that Minecraft's hard and normal modes become harder in some way that doesn't involve fake difficulty.

Before you say anything more, i'd like you to read the past couple of pages. People have made your argument a lot. Yes, we have gotten better and I for a fact have gotten better. However, Minecraft got easier at the same time, adding a lot of things that make the game easier while adding few things to make it harder.
Making a game easier isn't always a bad thing, I mean, look at the transition from Morrowind to Oblivion...
Morrowind was considerably harder than Oblivion and yet Oblivion was actually more fun to play.
I can't exactly relate to that, as I have only played a small bit of Morrowind and I have never touched Oblivion, but fortunately Minecraft has a very underutilized feature: difficulty levels. Yes, perhaps some people would rather play an easier game... so go play easy mode. For the people who want a hard game, you have hard mode to play.
I personally like lots of difficulty, and I tend to like challenging games more than I like easy games (hence why I prefer Zelda II to Zelda I, though they are different genres). Some people prefer easy games. Why not please everyone at once rather than say the change in difficulty could have been a good thing and leave it at that?

Did something happen to you in your childhood to give you this unreasonable fear of rutabaga?
Something that people can do to make the game harder is install Mo' Creatures (it brings some harder aggressive mobs, as well as some that spawn during the day) and use the custom mob spawner that comes with it to increase the spawn rate of all hostile mobs by a bunch. You an make it so that there're scary things all over the freaking place.
Well the problem I have with minecraft that enables for it to be easy is that there's a set path of things to do, it doesn't vary at all. Also there is processes to get the things you need, it doesn't variate at all. Theres different factors that could make it easy or hard but that's what makes it easy for the most part. The only difficulty is monsters. Thats the only thing, and lava, but monsters are the only and main setback. For certain people it may be hard just because they're new to the game or not very good at minecraft at all (no offence)
What makes it hard or difficult is the person playing.

Yes, I do think Minecraft has became easier I mean back in the 1.4 it took me about 10 Minecraft days for me to have on stack of iron (I know i suck ) but now it takes me about half that. But if you play on normal mode with the hunger bar it is kind of harder to survive in a cave with monsters than it was back in the 1.7. But even if Minecraft is easier now it is still a great game.

Yes it is a great game indeed! But nothing is perfect.
Has minecraft become too easy? All you have to do is dig down 3 blocks and cover it up and you can live for eternity! This must change. I realize that minecraft has a goal, but...besides that it doesn't take much to survive. What's the point of making a giant fortress to protect yourself? There is nothing to be protected from! (Besides the occasional creeper) Caves are EXTREMELY easy to find and contain tons and tons of ores! I am aware that the modding community make mods to satisfy us but what really matters to me (and mabey you) is vanilla Minecraft and how we play it!
Please do not complain that Minecraft is a sandbox game and that it doesn't matter that it is easy! I know that! This is about the "Survival" aspects of the game!
I mean look at this! You walk into a cave and you can get more than enough ores to satisfy you for days!
And look at this! Caves are easy to find wherever you go! You don't even have to search for them!
The caves in Minecraft are so clear that you can spot a creeper with no eye strain at all!
(I am aware that this picture is kinda grainy.)
For people who love the survival aspects of Minecraft, we need a way to make it so its less easy while keeping the game fresh and fun! (Mods is not the answer!)
You know, ever since the 1.8 update I've found it really easy to build stuff like this http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/1654503-international-style-hospital/#entry20441324. Remember the good old days when you had to collect the millions of materials to build stuff like this? The current creative mode just ruined the fun of building. Some of you might say that I could just switch to survival mode and build, but survival mode is for surviving, creative mode should have you be creative and creatively spend years finding sheep and shearing them. Jeb should just take infinite blocks, instant breaking and flying away from creative.[/satire]
Day 1 has gotten harder over time. Day 100 has gotten easier. Play on hard, it takes a while to become invincible.
The only difference I have noticed in hard is that I have to use fence gates for a door until I can set up a good looking fence (which requires iron). Oh, yeah, and hunger death, but food is easy to come by and it's easy to get a farm going.

Then you would get peaceful mode. So, play on peaceful mode.

Stuff like "The Wither" and the new mobs Minecraft is planning to release sounds like they are trying to do just that.
^ This; This is what I would like more hostile mobs but they can only and usually come up with one new hostile mob every couple of updates. Plus I can beat the wither with a decent enchanted diamond sword a bow and a few notch apples. If minecraft is to be ever become more survival based. Then they need to start making mobs with more health, Armour spawn rates, and attack strength. I've got Protection IV diamond armour and cranked it up to hard difficulty and can slay mobs without a hassle. Its like my sword is tearing through butter.
Heres an example for a bit of difficulty. If you hit a creeper with a fire aspect sword it'll explode instantly once on fire. Makes a bit of sense to me.
Why don't spiders have a bit of a speed buff? they have eight legs and I can still out run them with two.
Enderman should be able to pick you up on occasions and fling you up a few blocks into the air, say four blocks max?
Skeletons should take less damage from arrows. Why? Well they're just bones with big gaps in them which you could possibly miss them from time to time.
Why not have random hordes of zombies spawn near you other than NPC villages? Be fun fighting off thirty zombies attacking your house.
I personally think the over world mobs are far to easy and that the creeper is the most feared mob which you'll see often Witches would be first if they spawned like normal over world mobs.
Clearly the nether to me is the most dangerous because of the world generator and mobs = Bad time.

well, for some people it isn't "just fine."
people need a harder difficulty over here! :b

Mo Creatures
There's also the thirst mod, which makes it feel a bit more like a survival game.
Thirst Mod
Just a few suggestions. c: It works for me when I feel like getting that type of challenge.
You can also make weird rules for yourself, like not making a bed or something.
What makes it hard or difficult is the person playing.
How to not die in a cave
This post is a ton of ing .

Heck, I think it's gotten harder!
The Wither, smarter mobs, Infinite fire spreading (on hard), explosion knockback, etc.
Kept you waiting, huh?
