Maybe I just don't get this thing you call "fun", but I would be pretty annoyed after constantly killing Wither Skeletons and only getting to fight a potentially difficult boss fight.
No, in a game like this you need to give the player an incentive. A reward for progressing through hardship. Minecraft is a game about collecting resources to become a god. It's like saying that the only reason you fight the end-game bosses in Terraria is so you can have a challenge. The challenge is certainly great, but what really motivates you is the reward.
Now granted, I don't speak for everyone when I say this, but I'm sure most people agree that fighting the boss is not the only incentive.
You cannot pigeon-hole people into experiencing the same thing you experience with minecraft. I personally do not see minecraft as a resource collecting game, and I don't approach the game trying to become some hercules of combat. The reward is the beacon, anyways, how is that not worth it?

And you can't claim that collecting resources isn't a big part of Minecraft; you can get technical and say I can't prove it, but that would make you pedantic.

A better question is, what makes the beacon so great in the first place?
The highly limited range and insane amount of time and resources you have to put into it for a slight perk that you can get much more easily and efficiently with enchantments and potions.
You kind of forget that it has a function and a really nice particle effect that would make anyone's home that much better. Also imagine your bragging rights when your home has multiple beacons around it. It doesn't take a lot to show off.

Yes but use wise its near pointless since it only effects your front lawn.
The wither is easily distracted by passive mobs. The solution is a very OPEN area with mobs around, perhaps farm some animals and let them loose. The witherman will actually attack them just as much as he'll attack you, even with you slashing at him with your sword.
Obvious solution: Make a mob grinder designed specifically for the Wither and laugh as he suffers.
It can eat the grinder.
I tested this boss out myself just a moment ago, and...... just wow. This thing is MEAN. And the sheer amount of destruction it can cause..... Let's just say, I did not win this fight, lol. And neither did the surrounding landscape; craters EVERYWHERE. And then after it utterly obliterated me, it ran around evaporating sheep just for the heck of it.
This is something you do NOT want to spawn near your base. Or near ANYTHING. You spawn this in the middle of a very far off desert that you reached via portal.
And I'm not complaining about the difficulty, mind you. I love the idea of a REALLY difficult boss in Minecraft. Though, I'd like to see more bosses than just these two, of varying difficulty levels (there should be a couple of easier ones as well).
Cool stuff, though I want to see the Nether Star have more use beyond just the strange beacon block.
I'm nearly finished with my legit beacon pyramid (bottom layer iron, then gold, then emerald, then diamond) and I have to say, it's not hard to make a full one out of iron. The one I'm making however, is time-consuming. Finished all layers except the emerald one, currently harassing villagers for emeralds. The beacon is powerful for what you have to pay for it, and personally, I think the idea of the Wither dropping the Nether Star is a good one. He's challenging, but conquerable, and the beacon is a fair reward. Not only is it for show like the dragon egg, but it actually has a purpose.
I managed to catch one in a minecart before its health reached full, and he just sort of glitched out for a while then started shooting at stuff. It didn't leave the cart, and his health never filled, so he stayed invincible and kept shooting stuff. Might make for an effective anti-player turret, but very destructive. Much more effective than snowgolems though.

I don't understand how this is hard. Spend some time (oh no!) and get some enchantments, do some mining. A full det of diamond armor with prot 3, a diamond sword with sharpness 4, and a power 5 bow is all you need. some food and a regen potion are very helpful. Now all you have to do is stand there and shoot it to half health, then hit it with a sword to 0. Killed 4 of them at once solo using this. Very Very easy "boss". Maybe I am used to boss being something that can 1 hit you if you dont move at the right time, or just suddenly feels that you die right here right now, but IDK.
1) Enchanted Diamond Armor(I had Protection IV)
2) Bow(power 3 I think) well you get the idea
3) Healing Potions
4) Be quick.
Once you spawn him and he is regenerating run to a safe distance and pick him off with your bow. He will come close to you but might also be distracted by animals... so offer up some pigs?
Once he does decide to go after you make sure you can be quick. Be careful of the holes he makes. Getting stuck in them is not fun. Also try not to fall into naturally occuring caves... So know the area well.
Once he is at 50% health get up close and start whacking him. If he is still in the air stand under him and just jump up to try and get a few hits. Of course you will most likely end up in another hole. Get out of it lure him away to hopefully untouched land, and repeat until dead.
Though when I finally killed him he was real close to the ground making it easy. I just had to stand next to him and spam the click button. lol
EDIT: lol click button. I meant mouse button. I could change it real quick but...it's too funny,
I just beat him on normal(not ready for hard yet lol) but I used the enchanted golden apple. Expensive to make, but this is the only situation that using it seems viable, not to mention enchanted golden apples stack, unlike potions. So if your really dedicated to beating this thing it certainly can be done. The apples are resource expensive, but the just imagine how many ingots your gonna have to collect after you get the damn nether star lol
He does indeed need smaller tweaks (no, not making it easier), but I think it's good that if you want to beat the boss you actually need proper equipment such as enchantments and potions. I mean, if you're going to fight a boss, you can't expect to beat him with just plain ol' armour and sword, you need to devise a tactic and make use of enchantments, potions and simillar gear to defeat him. I think Mojang did well on this one, yes it does need minor tweaks, but he should stay more or less the way he is now. I just hope Mojang doesn't crack under the pressure of children asking him to make the boss easier.

Actually hes not invincible in minecarts, his health meter DOES break though. Hes still destructible, albeit just as sturdy as normal.

...but that's just like, my opinion, man.
I did manage to get him in a minecart and he did take suffocation damage for about 2 seconds...then he blew up all the blocks (and tracks) around him.
I'm glad we finally have a challenging mob, if you can't deal with it, don't make one.
