I don't like when servers give you certain privilages or items just for donating because they rarely do it well. The only items that I would tolerate being given to donaters would be items like sponge, a dragon egg, chainmail armor, or 2 mooshroom spawn eggs. You know, items that you can't get in default gameplay or if they're extremely difficult to get in game but don't break the game significantly. I also tolerate when servers give members the V.I.P status if they donate because it helps identify who's truly a dedicated member. I will not stay on a survival server if donaters get creative mode, an obsene ammount of diamonds, or operater status.
I run a small, private vanilla server but I don't allow donations because I can pay 45 dollars for 3 months of my server. It's not something I really need to worry about.
If you want to get unlimited items, play on a creative server. You really shouldn't have to pay for it on a survival server.
There wouldn't be any servers running without donators , at least not any significantly big servers.
It's already quite time consuming to manage one.
Don't get me wrong, once in a blue moon I do use a shop if I like the server, but I am more likely to open my wallet if there is a lack of one. Something about a shop just makes me feel like I am being used.
I also don't understand how a lot of people voted for liking donations, and have donating before, but don't like servers selling in-game items. I can't name one popular server out there that does not sell in-game items. o.O

Anti-donation high five.
All public servers are for the community and paid for by the community, theres nothing wrong with that.
I find it ridiculous that you think if someone doesn't spend their own money on the server, then he shouldn't run it at all then. Some servers can pay as much as $400 per month* and I don't think ANYONE would want to pay that much out of their own money.
* Most large servers (100 players+) are around this budget per month, for the dedicated server, ddos protection, advertising, website/forums, and if you had a custom server you could possibly be paying developers. Not only that but servers are VERY time consuming maintaining and hosting it all.
Man, that server. I will never understand how its one of the most popular servers out there. Its ran as if it were a company, blasting donate now messages at me every second, and people that bought admin ranks banning people for no reason. Thats why some people are so against donating is because of servers like that.
Yeah the term "donating" on minecraft servers is not really correct. But how else can you say it, I know most server owners know that donating is giving money and not expecting anything in return, but really no one will just give money for the hell of it without receiving something. And its the only way to keep em afloat.
Call it an item shop, and when someone gives money for an item they are purchasing it.
So if I can, I'd rather earn a rank than pay for it.
I've never actually donated to any server though.

Buying though is different for me. Although it gives you a reason to give money to the server it causes a disadvantage for the other players. The players that have donated small amounts or who cant are now instantly weaker than someone who bought something. Even with all items being accessible, someone who spends some money can instantly become as powerful as someone who spent 48 hours getting an item.
And with donator perks, I feel as long as they are not game breaking they are fine but should be light. And when you donate and are given diamonds or something, you are literally just buying diamonds not donating. Donating means, to me, doing something expecting nothing except feeling you did the right thing. If you get a title or a faster respawning time or something then its a thank you and you should not be donating to get that. But if perks are what gets the donators to donate I really can't argue against them.
